Food / Expats' Polish food favourites [140]

That's an honest answer! :)

Language / Use of A/An/The ...... Articles [186]

putting my head on the block now.

I am going to Jednosci (street)

I am going to Plac Bema (square)

I am going to Rynek (place name + square)

folks may have noticed that in posts i never say "the Rynek".

so, my question is why do brits add ''the'' when there is no actual market and it counts as a street/place name.

it seems to me that translation has gone too far. to my mind it's:

I am going to Rynek. or. I am going to the market square. not a mix of both.

Do you place a comma before "but"?

please, keep to a/an/the (some, countable/uncountable, singular/plural)

a thread on mixed grammar will probably get moved to off topic.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

"here you are", have a look, I have them written on my arse.

that wasn't very polite, was it ?

The prices In the cities will continue to fall until they reflect the wages of the Polish workers in Poland and its cities.

are wages not going up ?

Westerners invested blindly in Polish , Hungarian property etc.

developers don't sell according to nationality. they just sell. one can't blame them for taking advantage.

new flats these days are the walk in type. meaning no corridor/hall. they also have kitchen-livingroom combined, which gives a greater usable floor area. the flats are still small, cost less to build, and most importantly, not dropping in price. at least here in wroclaw.

the only thing that will bring prices down is the banks when they stop offering credit, because clients can't afford the repayments. no sign of that here in wroclaw.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Here in Warsaw, there are well in excess of 25 gated communities

Sorry, i meant (gated) housing estates. 50+ houses, nice gardens.

is this what u meant ? if it is then house prices will never go down.

i would think that the only way to get a cheap apartment would be to buy something in an old style block. but then pay on top of that to bring it up to date. so, in the end. property prices are not going down

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

In my opinion, there is still value, buying property in areas with good communications of the outskirts

i can go along with this for a while.

but i see a future of private estates springing up on the outskirts. these will include homes in the hands of doctors, lawyers etc.

i can think of one such (gated) estate in the wroclaw area.

apartment prices: the google building here in wroclaw is an example of overpriced apartments, still on sale after being on the market for a couple of years. the price won't drop. if it does it will be a desperate measure by the developer just to get things moving. (my opinion)

this brings up another problem that may affect prices. some developers build in the strangest of places.

Life / Polish interment practices...cemetary burial. [17]

The folks I asked about this in Poland did not seem to have a ready answer, even in one mortuary establishment!

one is left in peace for 10 or 15 years and then it's up to the church. (i think)

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

it's near Cmentarz Grabiszynski. Fallen soldiers from WWI and a dozen or so POW's from WWII.

i remember now, thanks. i stumbled across it long ago. it's very small and unless it's marked might be difficult to find.

there is also a tall monument on a hill down the road. near the tram terminus at oporow.

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

my opinion.

the botanical gardens on a sunny day: good
kids will find something of interest.

hala ludowa: for romantic summer walks.
connected to the japanese gardens, which have an entrance fee.
i've not seen the new fountain, so can't comment.
statue of chopin.

ostrow tumski: tumski bridge, the green bridge, a bridge for lovers. bring a padlock.
ostrow tumski has been cleaned up in recent years.
there is a little park/garden with a view of the national museum, but u have to find the path/road leading to it.
it is possible to take a lift to the top of one of the towers/ bottom of the spire.

panorama: most visited place in wroclaw. may have to book in advance. tour is in many languages.

zoo: oldest in Poland and in places it shows. has had money spent on it in recent years. a good faimily place.
across the road from hala ludowa

there are now properties in various locations with access to the river or marinas

rynek: garrison church. climb the steps to the top of the tower.

little people: these will keep the kids and photographers on a mission very busy.

From the Rezydent there is a direct tramline (#9) to the city centre.

not at the moment. the 9 and 17 routes are a little odd. repairs here and there.

i'd be happy to meet 'n' greet, if only to say hello.

Travel / Attractions in Wrocław: a Must-See List [117]

Are there any ruined buildings which have been preserved till today, like the ruins of Bank Polski in Warsaw were preserved after Warsaw Uprising

there are quite a few buildings with light damage. town houses for the most part.
the university had a good clean up a few years ago.
the (university) architecture building is being cleaned up at the moment.
you won't find bomb damage, only bullet holes.
all the damaged buildings are still in use.

i think it's tanks at the russian war memorial not canons. edit: it's both.

for anyone doing a war tour of wroclaw you really need a few hours and no kids.
for some reason i'm sure i've seen an italian war cemetery somewhere (maybe not)

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

I worked my arse off for years to start building,

i'm not against the idea of a self build. the loans i mentioned would naturally be smaller so i see it as a positive way to go.

there are some things they would definitely need a professional for.

there are some things people think they need a professional for and some things that only a certified person can do.

the majority of young professionals have no clue about tools unfortunately and are afraid to try.

the self build was popular twenty years ago, not so much now.

i tip my hat to teflcat for having the balls to go for it.

Work / Some cold, hard facts about teaching in Poland for newbies [101]

they cancel short-notice 2 times in a row more than twice.

if under 18's are doing this it means they are spending mums money elsewhere.

some folk really do have to be somewhere else, business meetings etc. arrange your timetable so that if they don't turn up it causes little inconvenience to you.

over the years u might find that you're teaching the kids or friends of such people.
