Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

A diamond pheasant;)
You are very close but ..... it is not so easy.:):)

As for the plane riddle above:

Yes, we need to wait for sb who is interested in aviation. :)

Actually, not. The plane is connected with the history of Poland so anybody who is really good at it should guess correctly.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

I'll be dead.

Yes, but one can be die a rogue or a decent person, and that makes a difference,. Milo, it is high time you corrected your sinful ways and become decent. :)

That ready made grave just seems like tempting fate to me, not what I would want!

Let`s not be supersticious. It is just a common sense combined with practicallity. :)

awful

Well, because you are still young and don`t think about the end. But when you get closer to it, then it won`t be controvercial anymore. :):) The owners of the grave were 64 when they had the initial inscriptions made.

Yes, a ready made grave, as you call it, I saw it a few times, 10 years ago I thought it was a bit extravagant, today I know that the owners want to prepare the place before they are gone so that nobody changes their concept how it should look like. You know how some people can be really pedantic. :)

It is just another example of Polish familiarity with the issue of burial/ cemetery/ death etc.

See below - names and birth dates only:

Travel / Poland in photo riddles [3134]

In light of you owning a nuclear fallout farm, my answer is Sobieski

Yes, Sobieski. I avoid radiation by drinking Sobieski and nibbling lard. It is the best method, invented by Chernobyl residents and it worked - they survived. Me too. :)

Hey, did you notice that when you answer correctly, it is the only time when you tell the truth in the forum? :):) I am the only guy who makes you give up lying, at least in this thread. - it is amazing! :):)

How about dropping in more often? There are a few unsolved riddles, check the posts above.

The tragedy of what happened to the Polish Jews of Kraków?

Yes, it symbolises piles of furniture which was left on the square .after Krakow Jews had been deported to death camps.

none of the cheap stuff for the prizewinners ;)

Let`s be generous, just once.. :):)

What is this riddle about?

We have the same in Ireland, though the pics on the gravestones are usually quite small.

Those pics I showed are also small, about 8-10 cm high.

As for cremation, it is indeed a necessity in the UK.

But it came to my mind to mention another clash of cultures between Poland and other Western countries. Here, people visit cemeteries not only on All Saints` Day on 1 November but also on other occassions, namely:

- before 1 November to tidy up for the holiday]
- after 1 November, to tidy up after the holiday
- at Easter time
- at Christmas time
- on the anniversary of death]
- on the birthday of the deceased

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

So, the strike collapsed because some crossed the picket lines?

It hasn`t collapsed yet, I said teachers suspended it in junior high schools for students` sake, to enable them to sit exams. Tomorrow they will suspend it in primary schools. But all types of schools where exams aren`t taking place are still on strike.

From the reaction above, I would swear I wrote "fire at".

No, you wrote fire sb, not at sb, but the tone of your whole post brought forth the association with a firing squad nevertheless.

First of all that is disgusting and reprehensible comparison.

Don`t blame me, complain to Rich about the associations he creates.

At last some words of wisdom from you,. Why so rarely?

Yes, it reminds me Nazi methods - execute the first 1000 Poles with no chance of ever coming back to life and the rest will think twice before starting an underground activity. The problem was it didn`t work as Germans presumed it would - Poles resisted to the end.

The same with teachers - you can shoot 1000 and the rest will still oppose PiS government. :)

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

In the Riddle thread we mentioned the coffin portrait art popular in past Poland.

https://polishforums.com/travel/poland-photo-riddles-25380/67/#msg1676588

The tradition is still present today though it evolved a little - pictures of the deceased are placed on gravestones. My rough estimate is about 20% graves in Poland display a photo, and the trend is getting more popular when I look at new burial sites.

How about American and British cemeteries?

Yes, it is purely Polish. Read about them. They are crazy. And quite known because it was my students who told me about them.

It worked so well that we never had a strike like this. I only wish we did the same with the striking teachers.

About 80% schools are on strike. That roughly means about 300.000 teachers. If they are fired, then borders will have to be open wide to employ new ones. Teachers from Africa and Asia - unite and come to Poland, vacancies are waiting! I would like to see that phenomenon - a black teacher at the blackboard. Of course, you mustn`t complain afterwards.

PS. Rich, good you are back. I hope you are in a better mood today than yesterday.

I even pointed this detrimental environmental impact in another thread

You`d better not mention other threads. :):) Your pointing to anything in other threads has been exposed as a pack of lies by Atch and other members. You still owe her and others explanations why you have lied so blatantly. ):)

That is why, we can`t take you seriously when you say:

eah, see my comments and shared article abov

What for?

The teachers either suspended their strike or didn`t obstruct people from outside to supervise students during junior high school final exams last week. There was no other option, really - students can`t suffer when adults are at odds.

The article below was written by a rightist author.

rmx.news/poland/exams-go-well-despite-teachers-strike

The Polish Teacher's Union (ZNP) suffered a surprise defeat due to the assistance of volunteers who helped run exams in Polish schools. Sociologist Andrzej Wojtyczko analyses how the ZNP's first loss weakens their negotiation position with the Polish Ministry of National Education (MEN).

Will there be prizes after your summing up on April 11th? ;) After all, we have all been very good students :):)

Yes, I think we can officially close the first season of riddles. Each season lasts two months.

I have loaded over 60 photos concerning Polish history, lifestyle, food, culture etc. Only a few haven`t been guessed, some are still waiting for a lucky guesser.

polishforums.com/travel/poland-photo-riddles-25380/78/#msg1684156

One riddle has been provided by Dougpol.

Looking through your answers, I counted full guesses and halves too.

Who made it to the podium in the first season?

First prize - Chemikiem - 20 correct guesses.
Second prize - Atch
Third prize - Mafketis.

I can provide the exact results for anybody who wants but on your request only.

Congratulations to all winners who know a great deal about Poland as well as thanks to all participants for your persistent attendance and wonderful intellectual effort.

Let`s say the new season has been started with the plane picture above.

Good eye for details, I didn`t read "Prezydenta", these inscriptions seemed so indiscernible.

Yes, that new plane riddle is an expert thing, we need to wait for sb who is interested in aviation. :)

Sth else instead: what does it symbolise?

In other words you had no choice but to locate to the suburbs because you are priced out of the city centre. :)

People move out of centres to avoid congestion, noise and pollution. If you are able to say such infantile things, it is clear you know nothing about trends which have been present for decades.

It is really strange you let that ignorance of yours be exposed so easily and so often, because you like pretending an expert after all.

News / Schools in Poland to strike tomorrow [235]

Who cares about your anecdotes? How is one man's experience relevant to the discussion?

It is fully relevant in the light of your suggestion that schools teach useless stuff instead of teaching how to deal with the overinquisitive police, among others. Here you are, your own words.

polishforums.com/news/poland-schools-strike-tomorrow-84736/2/#msg1685450

In response, I mentioned my own experience with the road police to let you know that I don`t agree with the notion that schools should replace frog anatomy with police handling rules. I don`t feel it is so vital because I don`t consider my contacts with the police a problem in Poland. If I was stopped by the police frequently and abused in any way, I would certainly try to include that in my teaching. So far, I don`t see a need for that.

question I asked: Are you required to step out or not? You gave me that evasive crap answer because you are clueless about your rights.

oops, you have had a bad day today because you certainly didn`t ask me that question so I never knew I should say what I know about my rights.

during a routine traffic pull over, when a cop tells you to step outside of your car, are you required under law to comply?

Funny, never have I been asked by the police to step outside of the car in Poland. Only when it rained, they requested me to join them in the police car to avoid settling some details outside.
