Law / Question about bureaucracy in Poland. [13]

Not some, all bills can be paid via internet but of course it doesn't mean that everyone does it that way.

Plenty of people on my osiedle do that.

Where did I say it does? This whole taxes thing is very unpleasant as far as I am concerned and in my opinion should be abolished.

If you abolished tax - who pays for the schools, the roads, national defence, embassies, prisons etc?

Law / Question about bureaucracy in Poland. [13]

Are things getting better over there?
Can you pay all your bills electronically?

Some. Paying them at the corner shop (like in England) is becoming more popular. That has its drawbacks. A couple of weeks ago I was at the end of a long line of people behind a woman in her nineties who was paying all her bills (several thousand zloties' worth in small bills).

Now,PIT in Poland can be filed via internet (e-deklaracje) for at least 4 years.

It still doesn't make the system quicker, or easier, or the tax office more pleasant to deal with.

Real Estate / MNE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY , LOFTS, U SCHEIBLERA, LODZ [36]

Try not to lose hope- you never know....another developer may come in and rescue the buyers...it has happened before.

Let's hope so. In the meantime the OP should consult a good lawyer - and fast. If he PM's me, I can recommend the one I use. Polish bankruptcy hearings are (if I remember) quite long, so there's plenty of time for another developer to be found.

UK, Ireland / Poland continues to milk Ireland dry. [129]

Poland has been taken advantage of for too long and now it's time for Poles to get a piece of the pie.

By Ireland?

Where were Poland's allies upon the start of the Nazi invasion

Life / Polish interment practices...cemetary burial. [17]

a number of old cemeteries were flattened in the communist days (usually German/Evangelic) and turned into parks etc

In Western Poland too. A strange thing to do in a small village.

always check expiry dates.

Does Krupnik have an expiry date? Surely it should get better not worse with time.

Life / Polish interment practices...cemetary burial. [17]

What do the words in red mean in English?

'Grave earmarked for liquidation'

It means nobody is paying for the plot any more. The headline in the article you cited means 'Stickers on graves are barbaric'.

At least they didn't paint a big red x on them, as one village priest did a couple of years ago.

Good advice. Does the US have an equivalent of the Public Analyst to whom you can just send a sample?

UK, Ireland / Poland continues to milk Ireland dry. [129]

The Poles living in Ireland are there legally and are not immigrants. They are exercising their right as European Union citizens along with their family members to move and reside freely within the territory of the Member States.

Very true.

The same cannot be said of actual Irish immigrants who have gone abroad

Except of course those who have migrated either within the European Union (including of course Poland) or to the UK between 1916 and EU accession.

Off-Topic / I am Polish and I am offended. [52]

There is nevertheless something of a cultural cringe noticeable in Warsaw. A certain type of people only want to see, hear and say the very best, the reprezentacjny, rather than reality - to pretend that failings aren't there (or aren't their fault).

Travel / Poznan airport sell cigarettes? [7]

i dont want my bag going through the xray (at security) with 10 blocks of cigarettes in it incase the secuirty takes them off me

They won't - the security don't care. The British customs might, in theory. In practise they never check unless they've a reason to be suspicious.

Travel / What's good to do in Wroclaw Poland? [34]

I cannot eat, swallow, drink or even breathe cause my teeth are so sensitive after a horrible whitening procedure I enjoyed in a small skanky town Jelenia Gora

Was it the ZOOM method? Some people find that really hard to put up with.

will never visit Poland for any kind of medical treatment.

It's the same wherever they do it. Uncomfortable.

Travel / Poznan airport sell cigarettes? [7]

can i buy Marlboro blocks in the "Duty Free" shops

Yes, assuming the duty-free shop is still open. There was one there last time I was at Poznan Airport. Post-EU entry, they may have changed it for a kiosk/souvenir shop but in any case they'll certainly sell Marlboro in blocks.

Genealogy / Sierzputowski, finding villages in Poland, Lomza region. [12]

Bacze Mokre

This indeed is a small village.

Now I would like to find out what, if any, relation they are.

That might not be so easy. There are still villages in Eastern Poland where most people have the same surname - I can think of two places like that off the top of my head. Of course they could be family members, but it's just as likely they're very distant cousins.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

Yes, the party controls that matter as the Prime Minister isn`t elected by the peoples.

The last two regimes have both had two Prime Ministers.

Janusz Korwin Mikke

Scary! Mind you, at least he looks like he's recovered from the self-inflicted stab wounds.

Travel / Poznan airport sell cigarettes? [7]

I flying to UK from Poznan i

You can't buy Duty Free for a flight to the UK. They always ask to see your boarding card. You can buy cigarettes at the normal Polish price either at the airport, or slightly cheaper in a kiosk or supermarket. You used to be able to smoke before the barrier only. Now Poland has a smoking ban, there's a chance they have a ventilated cabin after the barrier. The last time I used that airport I didn't notice a smoking room, but that was some time ago.

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

Stay on topic. A thread about the crash already exists.

I'm not sure one can discuss the 2015 election and Jaroslaw Kaczynski's candidacy and ignore the PiS point of view on that issue. It would be an elephant in the room.

Mention - yes, but not making a deal about it. Don't push it.

Genealogy / Sierzputowski, finding villages in Poland, Lomza region. [12]

There's a place called Bacze quite near to £omża, about 10 miles South East - in fact there are two - Bacze Suchy and Bacze Mokry. They are both absolutely tiny, just a few houses. Baczach could make sense grammatically here, especially since there are two Baczes and -ach is a plural ending (people from Katowice don't say 'in Katowice', they say 'in Katowicach').

Have a look at Bacze on the map. Interestingly there's also a couple of places (also tiny) a couple of miles South West of town called Sierzputy - your roots in £omża could go very far back indeed.

What would you call a government which not only renounced any attempts at investigation of the crash but willingly left investigation in the to foreign country hands but haven't even attempted to recover black box and what is left from the plane?

Aside from the fact that it was investigated by the jurisdiction in which it occurred, you seem to be suggesting that there's something fishy about not perpetuating the investigations. Why?

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

.Is there a Vice President or a Deputy PM?Do they run on the same ticket as the President
or PM candidates,or are they selected after the fact?

There isn't a Vice President. If anything happens to the President (for example dying in office, like the last one) the Marszałek Sejmu (Speaker of the House) is automatically sworn in. There's a Deputy Prime Minister. As far as I can remember, both are chosen after the election, and being a country with several parties and coalitions, there's a certain amount of jockeying and trading off for those positions. Most controversially, Andrzej Lepper (the radical populist farmer who hung himself recently) and Roman Giertych (an outspoken fascist) became Speaker of the House in exchange for their parties joining with PiS to enable them to form a government.

Yes - in France the changes were to do with war and bad politics - in Poland because of invasion and partition. There just wasn't any need for a change, and the Kaczynski Brothers' relationship with the constitution was at times unhealthy.

Could the President be a stronger figure based on the strength of his party or coalition?

I was thinking about that; really, There have only been 4 (well, 3 and a half even) Presidents since the restoration of democracy, so to a certain extent, politicians are playing it by ear and - a lot could happen if the circumstances are right, but those possibilities haven't happened yet.

It can be like that here.

If you want to work in the UK, avoid job adverts for the UK in Poland, unless its for highly skilled work - personal contacts are best.

For the type of work you've mentioned, I'd recommend a magazine called 'The Lady'. If they don't have an online version, perhaps someone in the UK could send you the latest copy. I'm not in the UK now, but maybe someone here can help.

No, it depends solely on constitution.

You'd think so, but the last one tried his hardest. Even talking about a 'fourth republic'.

Top Model would do just fine as president;)

We have an old lady instead. Saves a lot of trouble.

Could the President be a stronger figure based on
the strength of his party or coalition?

If the President is the from the same party as the Premier, rule tends to be more consensual. As to whether he can be a stronger figure - that would depend on the internal dynamics within the party.

If the President and Premier are from different parties, the President is more likely to be outspoken. But (and it's a big but)., the President's role is very limited. All he can really do is veto new laws that have less than (I think) 60% support from members of parliament. He can also refuse to sign off certain public and academic appointments, simply to make trouble. Lech Kaczynski was notorious for this.
