News / Polish hero pilot lands 767 without wheels. (Warsaw) [191]

delphiandomine: Well, would you want to land with more fuel than necessary?
I wouldn't stay up in the air for longer than necessary unless I was aware of a problem.

he was dumping fuel- he didn't have the option to land in the wisla.

News / Polish hero pilot lands 767 without wheels. (Warsaw) [191]

claiming that tvn 24 as a reliable news source is a bit of a joke, isn't it? more like they had loads of people who claim to be experts talking about nothing in order to fill time until the pilot does his press conference.

boeing sent people over to cover their asses. from what I have heard the pilot knew 5 minutes out of newark that there was something wrong with the landing gears. he did an outstanding job.

I have flown transcontinental warsaw to north america loads of times. I will not do it until Lot gets their new fleet. The planes are falling apart. I have personal experience with this. This latest event is even more reason to not fly Lot.

I have also flown loads of times in my life. both my parents were in the Canadian air force- in no way would I ever claim to be an expert but I did grow up living on military bases and going to military schools- this pilot knew what he had to do and he did it. there is no conspiracy.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

pip: Gazeta Wyborcza- you can't be serious. So, you made a similar remark about Wikipedia, who is a reliable source?

seriously? I could write a wikipedia entry if I wanted to. Don't you remember the whole Jean Michel Jarre fiasco? I would respect a real estate source in Poland.

how about this one.

media.reas.pl/en/pr/196409/residential-market-in-poland-q3-2011

that should be good reading.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

You must have missed the article in Gazeta Wyborcza on Saturday that talked of falls of 40-50% in land prices around major cities. Its not apartments obviously but it is going to give people much more reason to buy and build even if it means a few years of grief with the builders.

Gazeta Wyborcza- you can't be serious. It is not falling if it wasn't worth that to begin with. If the price of the land was hugely inflated than I would say that a drop of 50% is more like land returning to fair market value.

Real Estate / Banks in Poland selling fewer mortgages in 2011, down 49% [285]

no. there was a huge increase in price in the early 2000's but now that the market is saturated and building is constant- developers have had to lower their prices to accommodate this. There is some construction that hasn't changed their prices at all- sea towers in Gdynia- it is not selling but the developer hasn't lowered his prices- also the area next to sea towers has been purchased by Ikea which will also be sea front residential- I am sure the prices will be staggering and will sell- because it is Ikea.

A bubble is defined as high prices followed by a huge decrease- the prices have lowered and leveled- there is no huge decrease.

but for Residential Real Estate it is another story ...

yes, it is another story- it is not the same, it is not in a bubble- it is leveling out- the market is saturated and buyers are able to get better prices. ad nauseum

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

ok- so the coffee heaven outlets at shell have written "extra dodatki za free" I was there today and rolled my eyes at the sight of it. I hope it passes- I don't want my kids speaking so poorly.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

Please make the effort to realise that 1) English is not the only foreign language used by Poles in informal speech, and 2) it does no harm to Polish - 90% of these borrowings will disappear on their own, as new generations come up with something even MORE outrageous ;-p

can you give me examples of where other languages are used? It actually does harm to Polish- because what happens is that it becomes mainstream in Polish pop culture- we see it on tv and on the internet then people think that it is acceptable to distort the language.

I have a 12 year old who doesn't speak like this and she goes to an international school. However, I did learn something---my spelling will of course be way off- "sie ma enjio"---this is how it sounds. Playing with ones native language makes sense but adding new words from an existing language changes it.

Of course there are words like cafe latte, cappoccino- spaghetti that are necessary to keep the native but "extra dodatki za free" is just really stupid and a bad marketing ploy--especially when there are Polish words.

I know gratis from French- we don't use it in English.
za free is stupid and it tries to hard to please the customer- it is part of the foreign branding like coffee heaven(although not Polish owned now), royal collection, ginno rossi, reserved, quazi, and all the other Polish owned companies that are trying to portray a certain image

I had a Stella cider in Oxford last week- oh man- I had forgotten the taste. And long gone are the expat days at Morgan's pub in Warsaw where they had cider on tap. sad.

Food / Where to find cider in Warsaw [13]

I had forgotten how much I love cider, until I was in Oxford last week---pleasantly reminded.
Does anybody know of any places in Warsaw that carries cider? I found the British shop in centrum has a good selection but the prices are crazy.

another thing, why does Poland not produce cider?? They have the best apples here- you would think......I did find something called "shade" cydr and the price looks good- the only thing is trying to find it. Not all places carry it.

If somebody wants a good business idea in Poland---start up a cider company- it would totally be a hit!!
