History / History of European and Poland's anti-semitism [192]

Interesting documentary.

"It evokes anger toward the other side. Pain, anger, even hate"
"They are all anti-Semitic. Some are noisier than others"
"An increase (in anti-Semitism) sells..."

Sad to see how the kids are indoctrinated at such a young age.

Genealogy / Gleesau apud Posen, Polonia Silesia [35]

Bobocra, where does the latin marriage record come from? Couples were almost always married in a parish close to or in the bride's hometown.

Genealogy / Gleesau apud Posen, Polonia Silesia [35]

Remember that people were not as mobile at that time as they are nowadays. If the husband came from Dobrzejewice near Torun, then there's a good chance that his bride came from a village/town nearby - probably within a radius of 50 km. Gnesen/ Gniezno seems to be the best bet, although the Silesia reference is confusing.

News / The wave of designer-drug poisoning (dopalacze) in Poland [48]

...not only the products they plan to market but also in an anti-monopoly capacity.

I would add control over pricing. As far as I know, the US is the only developed country that allows big pharma to charge ridiculously high prices for drugs instead of putting a cap on the price if in the public interest. It's a national disgrace in my eyes that a company is allowed to charge $1125,- per pill for a drug that can cure Hepatitis C for example. Poland needs to avoid something like this under all circumstances.

News / The wave of designer-drug poisoning (dopalacze) in Poland [48]

I don't know if you know how the FDA works

I live in the US and I see every day that the FDA doesn't do its job. They've been approving drugs for decades, even though they often knew well in advance that these were harmful. Trasylol is just one of many examples (cbsnews.com/news/one-thousand-lives-a-month/).

Here's an older article from 2006 that shows some of the screw-ups of the FDA:

Poland needs an American-style Food & Drug Adminsitration

That's the last thing Poland needs. The FDA is under the control of the pharmaceuticals. They rarely get a job done properly, and they definitely do NOT protect the consumer.

Genealogy / Bensch, Zingel - Long lost German/Polish relatives [2]

When looking for ancestors in former German territories, always use the German place names for research before WW2.

UK, Ireland / Why English do not like Polish? [417]

Gathering information from blogs and other expat experiences it seems that the friendships/relationships here are not the same as some other countries.

It's almost always difficult for expats to make REAL friends abroad. Check this one out. It's about foreigners in the US and how frustrating it is for them.

News / Poland have the 3rd best Education System of Europe [49]

emphasis on obtaining a general education is what is driving the PISA scores up

PISA has countless shortcomings and can't really be trusted. Nations that can be found at or near the top of the PISA table are often gearing their school systems towards doing well in PISA tests. Finland is such a country for example.

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

I just downloaded the enclyclical and checked the PDF via a word search: no mention of Poland. It takes a lot of fantasy to turn this into an anti-Polish document.

i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2015/images/06/18/papa-francesco_20150524_enciclica-laudato-si_en.pdf

the encyclical has been seen by some as an anti-coal or even anti-Polish declaration.

So who in particular has interpreted this as anti-Polish?

News / Pope Francis' anti-Polish encyclical? Criticism of coal burning in Poland. [67]

Pope Francis talked about climate change and the environmental destruction across the globe. I haven't read the whole encyclical, but I seriously doubt that he mentioned Poland in particular. He didn't meddle in any country's internal affairs at all, IMO.

Genealogy / Skorupodski / Golwick - Were my Polish ancestors Jewish? [9]

Ziemowit, you're absolutely right: there could be many other reasons for the name change. I just mentioned one: forced polonization of the surname. AFAIK, this didn't only happen in the former German territories, but elsewhere in the newly created Poland as well. So maybe in Zduńska Wola, too. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.

News / Prediction: Poland to be World Superpower in XXI century [147]

You forgot about NATO.

To be honest, I don't believe that the USA would risk a nuclear war for any country in Europe except the UK.

But new problems may also confront Russia - challenges from China

At the moment it certainly looks as if these two nations are closely working together to limit the influence of the US. They are not going against each other as long as they have their common enemy. Nothing has changed since the end (?) of the Cold War.

Genealogy / Skorupodski / Golwick - Were my Polish ancestors Jewish? [9]

Polonization of names happened in Opole region as far as i know and only after the second world war

No, it actually happened a few years after Poland regained her independence (mid 1920's) in all territories that formerly belonged to the German Empire. They set up so-called "Optantenlisten" where people had to decide whether they wanted to stay in Poland or move to Germany (same for ethnic Poles who had to decide whether they want to stay in Germany or move to Poland). People who became Polish citizens were then forced to Polonize their names for official use in documents for example.

Genealogy / Skorupodski / Golwick - Were my Polish ancestors Jewish? [9]

would anyone know the reason for changing their name?

After Poland regained independence, a forced Polonization of names was carried out which included not only given names, but in some cases also family names. This might have been the case with the German name Wenner, although I can't see that Waner is any closer to Polish, to be honest.

News / Prediction: Poland to be World Superpower in XXI century [147]

If Poland got lucky and the general configuration of things on the continent lined up in a way advantageous to the Polish nation.

If that would ever happen, I'm sure the Russians would intervene. The last thing they'll accept is yet another (military) power challenging them on their western border.

News / Prediction: Poland to be World Superpower in XXI century [147]

in my eyes Poland is a superpower when it can protect.its borders.completely on its own.

This quote from Wikipedia pretty much sums it up:

"A superpower is a state with a dominant position in international relations and is characterised by its unparalleled ability to exert influence or project power on a global scale. This is done through the means of both military and economic strength, as well as diplomatic and soft power influence."

I can't see Poland ever reaching such a position of power. Population and territory too small, economy not competitive on a global scale, maintaining a large military completely unsustainable, ...

Poland a "military superpower" - what a nonsense. Where does the money come from? Can they financially sustain a certain technological level? Can the country protect itself from a nuclear attack? No. Next question, please... :)

News / Pro-Israel lobby to be formed in Polish parliament [29]

Any organisation, state, group etc has the right to lobby politicians.

Local groups and organizations? Yes. Foreign nations buying politicians? No! I don't know how familiar you are with AIPAC, but if you'd watch them openly corrupting politicians in D.C. you would start questioning the democratic foundation of the political system in the US as well.

Quite a lot of pro-Israel feeling here

Do you think it's okay that a foreign nation - Israel or any other - manipulates domestic politics of another country in such a way?

Off-Topic / Bozia - does such an affectionate term for God exist in other langauges [6]

Bozia nad tobą czuwa

While God watches over you? I remember something (remotely) similar from an old lullaby by Johannes Brahms which is called "Guten Abend, gute Nacht". One verse goes like "...von Englein bewacht" - protected by little angels. Probably meant to bring the same message across.

USA, Canada / American people attitude towards Poles in the USA [98]

I will have them speaking English like 'real rednecks' from the southern United States of America.

Nobody in the US is able to understand the Swahili that you call "southern accent", so how can you expect the poor Poles to understand?

News / Pro-Israel lobby to be formed in Polish parliament [29]

In the Polish parliament there already exist Ukrainian, Lithuanian and German lobby (groups).

Oh, I didn't know that. Do you have some links so that I can read up on it? Thanks.

From a purely ethical standpoint, this is legalised corruption.

That's what I thought, too - especially since I know how much AIPAC influences politics here in the US.'

What also surprised me is the reference to "shared Judeo-Christian values". Relations between the RCC and Judaism haven't been particularly good for a very, very long time. How strong are traditionalist catholics in Poland, do you guys know?

News / Pro-Israel lobby to be formed in Polish parliament [29]

Thought this was interesting:

The Israel Allies Foundation will launch its 32nd Israel Allies Caucus around the world when its representatives and those of the World Jewish Congress meet with Jewish and Christian leaders in Poland to mobilize support for Israel through faith-based diplomacy. The new Polish Parliamentary Israel Allies Caucus hopes to garner support for the State of Israel through their shared Judeo-Christian values.
...
The delegation was set to meet in Warsaw with high ranking Polish politicians, including MP Jan Dziedziczak, who will chair the new caucus. MPs from both the opposition and coalition parties joined MP Dziedziczak to further the relationship between Poland and the State of Israel.
