News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

minute 21.30 says it all..

BLOCKS..
With so many people forced to live in such inhumane cages, is it any

Millions of people round the world live in blocks without being hooligans. Most people who live in blocks here in Poland are perfectly normal.

There's nothing fishy about the timing - it's very topical due to the Euros. Just a shame that a certain type of poster on here thinks that a) the media should only show things about Poland that reflect a Polish point of view and b) that criticising one group of people in Poland somehow reflects badly on all of them.

Nothing about Yugoslavia, but it looks like the Czech Republic and Austria were transposed on their graphics. Quite funny really. On the whole a good documentary. I wonder why he said £ódź was the size of Birmingham though.

I wouldn't think any diehard fans would be deterred by it, and according to travel agents in the UK, there don't seem to be that many prepared to make the journey to the Ukraine.

Having just watched it, it seems quite balanced. Poland comes out of it better than the Ukraine. They interviewed anti-racism campaigners and showed actual footage of some of the Euro 2012 stewards training about this. And what was said in the training is quite true. If they don't Report something bad, a journalist will.

Contrary to some of the claims on here they did actually interview police; the chief of police in Kharkiv even.

just find timing strange, plus why didn't they show any international matches just local teams,

The timing is because the Euro2012 is about to be held in Poland and the UkraiSandoval football he is a hot topic and the lack of international matches is because there weren't any over the last 3 months while the cameras were there.

The Austria and Yugoslavia thing is weird. Did they actually say there there were land borders between them and Poland & Ukraine or did they use another phrase?

As for bias, Panorama has never pretended to present every point of view, but it is however professional. Though if they really did say that Poland has borders with Austria and Yugoslavia they should brush up their skills a bit. Has it been shown in Poland? I was talking with some people today who were saying how dreadful it was, but none of them had actually watched it.

they just don't do it in your face.

so behind the back then, avoiding issues like hooliganism and pretending there's no issue. Just as long as it looks ok to outsiders, that is.

RevokeNice

Pretty well true. The only worry is that the policing will be too heavy, especially if there are any signs of trouble. I suspect that anythings that's likely to happen will happen in the Ukraine.

Personally no. I've said a few times now that the police (in Poland anyway) will do anything They can to stop trouble happening against visiting supporters. Hopefully the worst we'll see is trouble between hooligans and the police. Unfortunately that will make the main news bulletins around Europe if they don't manage to contain any trouble very carefully indeed. I doubt there'll be too many people coming who aren't white. After all, it isn't the world cup.

I'm a job stealer and parasite to your benefit system.

Strange that you should admit it here, but good luck to you in your endeavours, anyway.

Nevertheless, I don't see what that has to do with the hooligan problem in Poland and the Ukraine which has been left largely unaddressed despite a major tournament being held here soon.

What do you want her to do

That's for her as minister to decide. One thing is certain. Just giving a press confence to the Polish media is slightly less than doing nothing. It wouldn't be so bad if she'd actually said what she intends to do, however I suspect she just doesn't know.

Besides timing of this documentary is suspicious.

Very far from suspicious, the timing is actually very topical given the forthcoming Euros.

Life / A new Poland's war - the poor vs the rich [81]

Next revolution? No. There needs to be another set of conditions like that. In any volition there are winners and losers, however as far as the Russian revolution was concerned, the living standards of the poor were so appalling beforehand that anything was an improvement. At least the peasants got glass in their windows and a chance to be literate.

Life / A new Poland's war - the poor vs the rich [81]

Exactly. When the rich pay so much less tax in proportion to their income as the poor, when they have different access to healthcare, when social services and education budgets are constantly cut in a society where 'the poor' have a certain level of expectation, then conflict occurs. The class struggle is exactly as Marx defined it.

there is journalism and journalism there is propaganda

And this is journalism. Coming from a respected and independent source with no point of view to propagate.

Talk about being on the defensive

Exactly. Perhaps they'd only have been happy if the BBC had broadcast a tourist information film about Chopin's birthplace and Wieliczka.

Life / Which services is Poland still waiting for? [218]

Laundrettes are not that common in the UK these days and who the hell cares if there's an manky drive through MacDonalds? There must be some REAL services that people want that dont have?

Being able to recharge a prepaid SIM card online without giving a Polish ID card number. A bugger to have to take your iPad down to the phone shop each time.

Try asking for real tea. A pot of hot water with a tea bag next to it isn't tea. The water has to be poured from the kettle on to the leaves or bag and left to brew for several minutes. Otherwise it's just coloured water.

The MaccyD's by Kino Femina is open 24/7. And unlike a lot of places in PL that advertise 24/7 it doesn't seem to stop for an hour to update the tills.

@ironside. No, there is no conspiracy, nothing was 'instigated' however there are genuine concerns. You might like to read what the European football organisers have said today. Very well reported, but perhaps you think that the media should only print things about Poland that are unfailingly positive.

News / Anty-Polish v column is located in White House [88]

Just some mistake by a speechwriter. Nobody thinks Poland operated death camps, so why make a meal out of it? There are more important things in the world to worry about.

Language / Dwa vs. dwie in Polish [85]

There's a long thread here on it, but really the best way is just to relax and listen to what people say.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

That's the media for you. They always show the most extreme images and time it so it's as topical as possible. Unfortunately in a country like Poland whose population tend to be extremely sensitive about what people think of them it causes maximum irritation.

@RN's advice is pretty sensible. City centres should be fine, and heavily policed. The last thing the authorities want is scenes of bloodshed on the TV news around Europe and they'll go a very long way to make sure that doesn't happen. Dunno about Ukraine though.

It was a tram actually, and I've seen far, far worse over the years on public transport here in Warsaw, including extremely violent attacks, robbery, drunken fights and plenty of shouting matches. So yes, one would expect it more here than in the UK. Though what that mentally ill lady has to do with the dangers of hooliganism during Euro 2012 is very hard to see.
