News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

I wish such a thing actually existed.

Actually it does - among extreme right wing Ukrainians and Belarusians. That's about it.

Study / French or English or Polish schools in Poznan (for age 9 and 11) [34]

I do have a question, how much are private schools?

They're both around the 15k PLN mark a year. These are the English speaking schools.

You can find cheaper Polish schools - but it would seem unlikely that these schools will accept non-Polish speaking individuals due to the heavy reliance on results to "sell" their schools. I've had a chat this evening with a few people about your situation, and everyone has said the same thing - it's the international schools or homeschooling.

Do you think this could be possible in Poznan also?

Absolutely no, unless you were already working at one of them.

And one more question... do you know the names of any French or English private schools?

The only two in Poznan are isop.pl and szkolapol-ang.pl

Both of them have fees around the 15k mark a year.

News / MORE ANTI-POLISH SENTIMENT IN GERMANY [280]

My own feeling is that Poles in Germany or elsewhere don't have anything at all to worry about over a Polish comedian who's doing this kind of routine - if anything it gets people to think and humour is very good at overcoming hatred when it's done in the right way.

The thing is that Poles in Germany couldn't care less.

The only people that seem to care are village idiots and Polish Americans.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

My family had a great deal of land in Poland, I think it's time my family gets it back from the Jews.

You're not getting it, so tough :)

Let's be realistic - such plastic Poles as yourself only want the land because you're greedy for more money, not because you'll actually do anything good with it.

Life / Cost of living in Wroclaw (rent price too) [119]

I don't want to live again like a student. I'm over it ;)

From what you say - 7k netto (10k brutto) should be your starting point. I wouldn't even bother with less - while it's perfectly possible, to live a reasonably decent life as a single person, you'll need that.

Study / French or English or Polish schools in Poznan (for age 9 and 11) [34]

We will be in Poznan for at least 4 years, so would like to make a good chocie of schools for them.

Alas, your options are rather limited. Both international schools here are expensive and are of shockingly low quality, while the Polish education system is likely to be a rather big shock for them as the culture is completely and totally different.

My only suggestion would be to try and get them into one of the so-called social schools - but there aren't many of them and they're very popular.

I'm sorry to say that it's likely to be a huge struggle for you if you can't afford to put them into private English speaking schools. While the 9 year old might cope (and even then, I have my doubts) - the 11 year old is definitely going to struggle in the Polish middle (secondary) school as they simply won't make any allowances for her in the public schooling system.

Homeschooling is also much more difficult in Poland than elsewhere - there are many checks made and an approved programme must be followed.

If I can be of any help at all, give me a shout.

I've been thinking about this some more, and I simply cannot see how you can make this work on any practical level. However, if you're determined to go ahead with this, then -

1. You'll need to spend a year "integrating" them into Polish society. That means intensive Polish classes (4-5 hours a day) combined with many extracurricular activities where they integrate with Polish children. You could get a Polish teacher full time for around 2500-3000PLN a month for someone capable enough to bring them up to standard. This also will place huge stress upon your children - Polish schools simply will not accept "me no speak Polski".

2. They'll also have to spend considerable time adjusting to the Polish system of learning facts - which is totally different to the British model of applying knowledge. This is going to be ridiculously stressful for them.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but Poland really isn't very well set up for non-Polish children attending State schools. The class sizes, the programme - Poland very much follows the "classical" system of education.

As for the two private schools - you'll be looking at somewhere in the region of 15k PLN a year each for them.

Yes, the point is that you very often talk the talk about Poland, but when it comes to coming here and actually helping us - naaah. You can't be bothered.

Tell you what - if every Polish American on this forum gave me $100 a month towards funding sport opportunities for children in Poland, I could do so much with the money.

He was a person, not an institution. Exactly contrary to 'whoever the authority is.'

I don't know - it seems to me that if WW2 hadn't got in the way, Poland would have slid further into dictatorship - probably with the cult of Pilsudski used to put a stop to any dissent.

Interesting topic though.

I can confirm Delph's love of finding the most shocking bars in Poznan.... the one with prn mags was my favorite!

I was told yesterday about a bar with devil breasts, whatever that involves :D

And yes, I'm in Poznań too. And I like it.

Do what you want but from my personal experience the Internet more isolates people than helps them to comunicate.

I'd be inclined to also say that the Internet, while bringing some people together, has also driven a pretty big wedge between peoples too.

I'm sure you would very much also support another president who is like Kaczynski LMAO!

Actually, what you'll find is that even the people who hated Kaczynski still respected him for being the President - he still was the Head of State, regardless if you agreed with him or not. There's a rather great quote by Toby Harnden where he says (talking about the Irish) that "my people are still my people even if I don't agree with them" - and that's how people felt about Lech Kaczynski.

People here were devastated after Smolensk not because of who Lech Kaczynski et al were, but rather because of their titles - the President of Poland, Commander of the Air Force, etc etc.

A true patriot would respect these offices regardless of who the office holder was.

Life / Is there something like a "Polish culture" or Polish national identity? [49]

It's not to do with being lazy and undisciplined, but rather problems relating to a lack of funding and corruption. The PZPN is a great example of this - instead of leading the way and making Poland into a reasonable force, they've spent years sitting on their hands and doing next to nothing.

(they DO have the players - Klose and Podolski are two great examples of players that should be scoring for Poland, not Germany!)

And yes, I read something about the drinking issue. Sadly, as long as the whole system is run rather unprofessionally, we'll never see any change.

On the other hand, Poland's winter sports organisations seem to be far, far, far better run.

Currently you have a world class woman's tennis player from Poland.

True. I'll give you that - despite her father's political views, I can respect the way that she managed to success in spite of the general lack of sporting opportunities here.

Do I have to remind you not long ago where 3 of the 10 world's strongest men came from?

Haha, come on - although it's fun to watch, those guys are all roided up. Pudzian would never last ten seconds without his steroids ;) Great marketing for Poland though, I must admit.

Do I have to remind you what country has great boxers especially for its size??

Polish boxers aren't really anything special - Adamek has only really found success in the Heavyweight division because the challengers are so awful. Golota was a gutsy, but stupid guy.

delph this topic of Polish athletes you definitely have little knowledge of. Its hard to believe you live in Poland or are around Poles, without knowing about these things.

I know enough about Polish athletes ;)

To be fair, Poland has produced Adam Malysz and Justyna Kowalczyk in recent years - both of them are genuinely world class. They're also starting to produce a lot of good goalkeepers in football - but seem to doing badly in all other areas ;)

Truth is MW, Poland does really badly for her size. Look at Australia - 21 million people, about half of Poland's size and far more isolated, yet they're far superior in almost every sport.

Tell me though - do you think Polish Americans would be interested in helping Polish sport with financial contributions? Poland badly needs American money and expertise in sport.

Reading post of some users here I can say that something like 20% of active users are complete nuts.

Only 20%? Me and convex came to the conclusion that the vast majority of active users are complete nuts.

I think many people see this forum as reflecting Poland. It may not be accurate, but new people to this forum probably think it does reflect Poland generally. I am talking perceptions here.

Which is why it's so important to make sure that the racist members of this forum do *not* ever take over.

What do you gain?

Amusement.

I am a third generation Polish-American

Great, when are you coming to Poland to volunteer in our hospitals, schools, churches and more?

Or are you, just like all the other Polacks, going to leave that job to the fine Americans of non-Polish origin?

I officially advocate the use of the term "Polack-American" in order to avoid any sort of association with Polish people.

You already have a Polack thread: Polack/American Polonia/Plastic Pole "culture"
Please feel free to continue using it, rather than making the same point in other threads.

Too much temptation. Where dat?

It's the place called U Franklina about 10m away from Most Teatralny - if you're driving along Roosevelta from Solacz, it's just before the traffic lights on the right hand side.

Truly strange place - we were drinking in there last night after midnight. Things only got better when we discovered a small "disco" room, complete with disco ball and strange lights!

Can we have a side book on when the "St Georges Cross BANNED" story will appear in the Mail in relation to the Championships?

I think the fact that Kwasniewski was elected twice in a democratic vote for President by the Polish people is enough for me.

Perhaps if you had a shred of real patriotism in your body, you'd support the elected leaders of Poland irrespective of what you actually think of them. Of course, your own false patriotism means that you only support the bits you like.

News / Polish journalist charged with insulting Belarusian President [16]

Guessing this is what delph was waiting for, I'll get it in before he does. Poland has the same laws.

Indeed. And it was used against some homeless man, if I recall rightly - for insulting Lech Kaczynski.

Here we go

Poland is searching for a 31-year-old homeless man after he failed to appear in court to answer a charge of insulting President Lech Kaczynski.

The man is accused of slandering Mr Kaczynski during a drunken outburst as police were questioning him at Warsaw's main train station last winter.

In Poland it is a crime to insult the head of state.

If convicted, the accused could face a maximum three-year sentence. He is believed to be in southern Poland.

news.bbc

In regards to Poles being dual citizens - as I recall, Brussels placed considerable pressure on Poland not to grant Polish citizenship to those stuck in the former USSR. As a result, they can only get the "Karta Polaka" - not full citizenship.

hahahaha, DD, you're full of it man, hahahaha

Ask them about their origins. They'll all tell you that they're from the Eastern borderlands - and as we all know (or at least, Europeans know) - Poles, Lithuanians, Belarusians, Russians and Ukrainians all mixed rather freely for centuries.

oooh and on another thread DD is whining about the toleration of "racist nonsense".......

Ridiculous, isn't it?

I'm all for a total ban on racist nonsense here.

Incidentallly it is "deprecating" not "depreciating"

Ugh, schoolboy error ;)

If he legally obtained/regained Polish citizenship and was never stripped of it, then your father is free to claim Polish citizenship. From there, you can claim it too. Pretty easy, really.

A forum may be like a newspaper: either a quality one or a tabloid. According to the policy of the editors, it attracts the very different groups of readers.

This is probably the most intelligent post I've ever read on here.

Look at englishforums.ch. It's a far more highbrow place, not because expats in Switzerland are more intelligent, but because the moderation policy simply discourages trashy nonsense. We can't blame the mods on here for this - the admin makes the rules, the mods have made it clear enough in the past that they simply do as they're told.

Heck, even expatua is far more highbrow - again, because racist nonsense simply isn't tolerated on there.
