News / Closet homosexual politicians in Poland [83]

Maybe she should have been looking across the Cabinet table instead...

It's true, JK does look like a Tellytubby. I'd say he most resembles the red one. Don't know what the thing on the head signifies.

Life / Poland's Environment, recycling [79]

One is still the large tin collection bin and now there is a big red one and a smaller red or green

At a guess I'd say the green one is for recyclable waste, the black one is for non-recyclable, and they haven't got around to removing the old one. Why not have a look in the bins and see what other folk are putting in there? Or ask a Pole for help in explaining the notice. Or post the notice on here and ask for a translation.

Travel / Exchange Euro to Zloty - I am going to arrive in Warsaw [17]

100 Euro at the airport which will give you enough for some chow, a cab or bus and enough for
a nights stay.

Please let me know where I can get a cab from the airport, a meal and a hotel for 420PLN. I'd like to visit.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

As a teenager I went to many parties clutching a bottle of Woodpecker and an LP, but I'm afraid my middle-aged stomach can't tolerate cider anymore. That's why I just had the one apple beer, and a couple of Rennies afterwards. I did, however, check out that pub you found in Malmeda in B.Stok last Sunday. It was beautifully air-conditioned and tastefully furnished, and had a great selection of 21 beers, plus a tasting selection at 18PLN. I couldn't drink as I had the car, but I plan to sink a few on my birthday next week.

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

Doing my bit for the Polish apple trade, I had a Somersby Apple beer yesterday. Very refreshing in this weather, and much better than the chemical, gassy Reds. Pricey, though at 4.10PLN. I've just had a Warka apple beer (2PLN) which I bought in error (forgot glasses and couldn't see the alcohol content). It's a nice drink, but at 2% lacks something the Somersby, at 4.5%, has.

UK, Ireland / British products in Warsaw [32]

The one thing that would make my life complete is a good cracker for cheese. Obviously, I don't expect to find Scottish oatcakes (the perfect accompaniment) in Poland, but at the moment I have to settle for Lajkonik krakersy super, which are ok but a bit salty. I find digestives a bit too sweet for cheddar, and I'm reluctant to import crackers from the UK. Any suggestions?

Food / Is it possible to get dehydrated Suet In Poland? [3]

british corner shop .co.uk sells Atora and delivers to Poland. BCS sells the 200g box for 1.69GBP. A few weeks ago I bought some from Waitrose in the UK for 1.10GBP. The veg suet was the same price. BCS deliver to Poland for 11.99 (up to 30Kg; half price if you spend over 100GBP).

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

Eliseusz, in your posts you often use pronouns connecting you with Poland. Are you a Polish person living in Poland?

When I see something like this

I am grateful for their help.

it makes me curious. Come on, don't be coy.

Oh well, I'll just have to guess you are a third generation Pol-am with a search engine.

Law / Translation agency in Poland won't pay me [10]

Small Polish companies will wait to get the money in from the job before they payout to the service provider.

My wife and I have been working regularly with half a dozen translation agencies, as service providers, for over ten years, and we have individual agreements with each of them concerning payment deadlines. We usually receive payment 15 days to a month after invoicing the agencies. It is important to agree terms before taking on jobs. We've had only a few problems over the years, mainly with smaller firms being shafted by big clients and not being able to meet payment obligations. The OP will, I hope, learn from this experience.

Real Estate / What does a traditional apartment in Poland look like? [8]

such blocks were built throughout Europe, certainly not only in Warsaw Pact countries

I used to live in a flat in the Moscovsky district of Petersburg. This area was built as the new city centre, as Stalin wanted the old (and very beautiful) town to wither and die. The idea didn't work, but the Moscovsky district flats were built to a very high standard, and are much sought after even today.

Law / Translation agency in Poland won't pay me [10]

Keep pestering them. They've accepted that they owe you money, which is better than just avoiding the issue. My guess is that you'll get paid eventually. Some of these small agencies have cash flow problems; they themselves often have to wait months for payment from clients. Hang in there and phone every day.

Law / Translation agency in Poland won't pay me [10]

Did they sign off the job as being accepted in full?

If they asked her to send an invoice and promised to pay that day, I guess that implies acceptance.

Law / Translation agency in Poland won't pay me [10]

Is it the first time you have done work for them? How much money is involved? Is it a well-known agency? Do you know whether they received either invoice?

Life / What's the climate and food like in Warsaw? (I am a student from India) [10]

What kind of vegetables do we get in Warsaw?

Have a look at this site: warsawtour.pl/en/warsaw-for.../markets-3520.html‎Cached

You won't find everything you'd get back home, but you're sure to find okra, spinach, all kinds of squashes and, of course, potatoes. Spices will be a bit trickier. I've never seen asafoetida (hing) here. Perhaps you could bring some (well wrapped) if you use it.

You need an unbrella. If you're staying for the winter, you'll need warm boots and a good coat, but you can buy those here quite cheap. Save your baggage allowance. There are Indian restaurants, but be prepared for the shock of your life when you see the prices.

News / Who are you voting for in the 2010 Poland's presidential elections and why? [82]

But I wouldn't be so brave as to exclude a priori any "paranormal" forms communication which is unknown to modern science.

I agree. I believe science will eventually be able to explain many weird phenomena. Could ghosts be poking through space-time? In an infinite universe, anything is possible. No, my scorn is directed at charlatans who manipulate, frighten and defraud people through magic tricks masquerading as supernatural or divine powers. Anyone can appear to go into a trance and talk crap. Just to prove it, I'm now entering a trans-like state and, guided by my Red Indian/Native American spirit guide, I'm going to make some predictions.

1. In the not-too-distant future (which gives me 5 years' leeway) a plane will crash in....er...Spain.
2. In the.......future a prominent European politician will be assassinated.
3. ITNTDF an earthquake will occur in S.E. Asia, with much loss of life.
4. ITNTDF a terrible train crash will happen in Germany.
5. In the next two months there will be a school shooting in the USA.

Work / Moving to Poland, what documents do I need? I will be teaching English [15]

Scottish I'm guessing hence the "aye

Scots are not the only Brits who use the word.

Insurance: At the very least, you should have one of those little blue European Health Insurance Cards.

If you're on a work contract, you'll need a residence permit. If you're working legally, you'll need to pay ZUS (Polish health insurance).

As I said, check out old threads on the forum. You'll find a lot of detailed, relevant and true information by people who know what they're talking about.

News / Who are you voting for in the 2010 Poland's presidential elections and why? [82]

But with the shooting down of the Malaysian passanger plane MH17 over Ukraine on the 17th of 2014, one may see his prophecies in a different light now.

Or one may see his prophesies in the same light as before. I could make a dozen prophesies off the top of my head right now. If one of them 'came true' in a vague way five years later, would I be hailed as a modern Nostradamus?

Language / Do English-speakers sound funny when we speak Polish? [49]

What is the difference between "stress-timed" and "stressed-timed"?

The difference is that the second one is wrong. Typed in haste. Sorry.

I sound like someone asking for loose change outside the night shop when I attempt to speak Polish.

UK, Ireland / "These Scottish are only here for the free booze" - Bestman speech at a Polish Wedding [18]

his previous time in the navy when he woke up stark naked and cant remember why he got there, please tell me that's not too much ?

Sounds fine, but 9 minutes including the translation or twenty minutes? I'd say 9 minutes was too long, unless of course you are naturally hilarious. Do you know the translator? Does he/she have an excellent grasp of idiomatic English? Will you have time to practise? At my otherwise great wedding my brother told a joke with the help of a Pole with OK English. It was torture to listen to, and went down like a heart attack. Brevity is the soul of wit.
