Love / How common or culturally accepted is divorce in Poland? [43]

I have never met a Christian that got married in a Mosque a

I have

NO if you are a Christian you don't have the option to consider another sort of philosophy of legalism that contradicts the Bible.

The Vatican do just that.

Millions of unsaved people consider legalism a philosophy that trumps Gods words.

So many religions to choose from, so many gods. And still a marriage that is dead should still be buried, and Poland fortunately still has plenty of divorces.

Your argument

What argument?

What's written in a club's rulebook isn't always how it works out in reality

Millions have divorced in Poland. If a particular family's so dreary that it's a problem for them, it probably doesn't take much to alienate them.

Then the marriage was not valid according to Canon Law

It was entirely genuine and valid. This is normal with Diocesan Marriage Tribunals - they just pretend it isn't.

Most rational adults are not scared by the antics of clergy. Register office weddings in Poland are very nice, as millions of divorced and remarried people can testify..

Provided that the rather stringent conditions for dissolution are met, the decision to do so belongs to the Pope alone. ....., if so, prepare the request to be sent to the Pop

I doubt the head of that organisation even looks at 1% of 1% of the decisions made by his minions. The conditions, by the way, are not stringent, hence the huge numbers of Catholics who dissolve their marriages.

Once a valid marriage has been consummated, though, even the Pope is powerless to dissolve it.

Again, the rather Jesuitically used word 'valid'. A friend had her (in every way valid, legal and ordinary) marriage dissolved on the grounds that she said she was too young at 22 to be fully aware of what she was getting into yet her family wanted her to marry. Fortunately she had witnesses to vouch that she'd said at the time she was unsure. This was interpreted very loosely, as it so often is.

And of course, anyone, whether a magical thinker or not, can end a marriage in court and religious groups can say whatever they like (and frequently do), but can't do a thing.

The clue here, Dominic, is 'validly entered into'. This is (fortunately) interpreted very liberally, so marriages that are in every way normal are often dissolved. There's an interesting and oft-relaxed get-out clause.

Love / The age of consent in Poland is only 15 [147]

This whole thread is just bad and getting worse, the mods need a black permanent delete button in this instance

Agreed. It becomes an unpleasant subject when someone is talking about how much they want to abuse 12 year olds, especially when that person has already served a jail sentence for grooming one.

Travel / Gdansk Christmas markets [26]

I'm not sure I'd fancy Gdansk in December.

Bitterly cold there in the winter.

Not if you are a Christian and get married in the Church j

Very much yes. Millions of people who were married in mosques, churches, whatever, get divorced.

Pedal your propaganda elsewhere.

Pedal your propaganda elsewhere.

Just to be clear, the Roman Catholic Church does not permit couples married in the Church to divorce under any circumstances, period

Just to be clear, every RC diocese has a Diocesan Marriage Tribunal to deal with dissolving marriages. The RCC prefers anullments, however they also issue divorces - a friend (now dead) worked as a Defender of the Bond, basically a devil's advocate automatically arguing against dissolving a marriage.

The Orthodox Church has always taken a more practical view - if a marriage dies, bury it.

the law that will count for eternity.

Those millions of divorcees are free to consider any sort of philosophy they like, or not. Anyway, plenty of religions (including the predominant one in Poland) permit divorces under circumstances they feel appropriate. In theological terms, the death in 'till death us do part' can also mean the death of the marriage.

Of course the non believers take that same vow,

If they marry in church. The Polish civil ceremony talks about the commitment being 'trwaly' or lasting. It doesn't refer to any Scientology-style billion year contract.

It's quite common in Poland, is nothing new, and plenty of people are divorced. Most extended families will have members who are divorced.

Commonlaw marriages are also accepted and there are provisions in the law which give certain rights to cohabiting couples.

UK, Ireland / Polish career criminal gets six years for rape [43]

UK always had a total control over non-EU citizens- yet we cannot even do that (i.e. control them).
claims that "we will finally control our borders" are utterly idiotic

Absolutely.

America

Their criminal justice system cannot in any sense be called civilised. As bad as their so-called healthcare system.

I don't see why anyone convicted of a serious crime should be residing in a UK prison at a cost to the British taxpayer

He has the option to apply for the prisoner transfer scheme if he meets the criteria, however he'd probably find a Polish prison to be far worse than a British one, not that British ones are in any sense comfortable.

Love / The age of consent in Poland is only 15 [147]

I look 21-24. How is that old for a 15-16 yr old?

It just is.

The age of consent in Poland is only 15

14 in Germany and Italy, 15 in France and Poland, 16 in the UK and Spain, 17 in Ireland, 18 in Malta and Turkey and 20 in Tunisia..

It's relative, and the difference between a 15 year old and a 17 year old being able to consent is one that there are different opinions on.

Language / Easy texts to practice Polish sentences/reading/vocabulary? [33]

I started with Lord of the Rings, for example. Harry Potter is another good choice.

Far too difficult for learners.

Underline ALL the words you don't know or not completely sure of until you have about thirty words underline, then stop and look up those words in the dictionary,

No. Koszalin Chris should look for a book where he is unfamiliar with around ten words per page. He should concentrate looking up those necessary for the text to make sense.

Work / Information about jobs for Indian students in Poland [286]

a MBA from Polish University (University of Euroregional Economy is suggested by my agent).

This place is quite low in the rankings. It's good for certain courses, but there are better places for MBAs in Poland. Depending on your age and work experience, here are some interesting programmes run by the Polish Academy of Sciences. Have a look at those. They're aimed at people who are working in a good career, however they're extremely flexible and there can, I think, be a distance component. I was looking at them myself a couple of years ago.

Travel / Białowieża National Park in Poland [461]

. Bialowieza is not pristine, but it the LEAST TRANSFORMED, BEST PRESERVED of the European virgin forest, by a very long way. That is why it is valuable. I

It should be preserved,

We should never forget that all experts, all independent environmental agencies, all credible authorities have condemned the PiS attack on the forest..

Travel / My Experience in Poland (compared to Germany) [100]

I think the AfD already split in half this morning.

That's good news.

the smallest sniff of power was enough to have them at each other's throats

Craven individuals, ruled by fear rather than decency.

They have their parallels in Poland too, of course.

The current German coalition has been re-elected for yet another term. Therefore, their actions are democratic. Any political party that supports political and legal equality for all is democratic.

You're not doing Polish people any favours by taking an attitude that encourages the kind of corruption one sees in Banana Republics.

Yes, it's basically disrespect to the country and its people (it doesn't work either) - it's also illegal with very good reason and a very bad idea to even try it..

ganging up on the only political party

Fascists. 'Ganging up' on them should be the default position of all decent people. Otherwise someone always gets hurt.

For me his views on Poland are just too 'sweety'. I think he is a guy with some agenda

Rare that we agree.

Food / Herb used in Polish rosol (chicken soup)? [88]

good for you. Am I not allowed to be surprised?

You are allowed to be surprised ;-)

The home made ones are always better, and so easy to do. The only problem in my house is that, being delicious, they get eaten as malosolny - we don't always let them pickle for long enough. I also do British-style red cabbage, since I find the type in jars in Poland to be too mild for my taste. The secret with that is to use allspice and peppercorns, plus sweet vinegar (if you can get it).

For rosol, we rarely make that with chicken (and use both pietruszka and natka pietruszka if we do) but very often do beef rosol - it's a good base for soups.

For that rosol, I use basil, thyme and marjoram.

About 41 results (0.27 seconds)

So there you go. The rare words are the best for catching out unschooled people.

Food / Herb used in Polish rosol (chicken soup)? [88]

I'm kind of surprised you do.

Why are you surprised, kaprys? We always make our own. The bundles generally have some horesradish in. Carrefour, Makro etc also generally have some in stock when it's in season.

Doesn't matter, no such a word in Polish.

Google it.

You come to such sweeping conclusions after ONE week in Poland? How much time have you spent in Europe? One and a half weeks?

He certainly asked a hundrd trivial questions before coming out with all this stuff.

You are right, something doesn't add up.

Food / Herb used in Polish rosol (chicken soup)? [88]

Don't be daft - you're just trying to argue.

As an ingredient, Hamburg Parsley (not actually that common in Holland, however Jane Grigson does refer to it there) is only traditionally found east of a certain line. If you can get it in Britain, Spain or France at all, it's only in shops catering to diaspora communities.

It's essential for rosol z kury, and although it resembles parsnip (rare in Poland) it has a more bitter taste.

I've used it as a substitute for parsnip (parboiling it then baking it coated with flour and parmesan is nice) however there are some flavour differences.

In rosol z kury, you also find marjoram - something of a catch-all in Polish cookery, rather as sage used to be in the UK.
