Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

I agree with those that say this couple is not ready to buy. It doesn't look like they can even afford to rent! But, on top of that, why would they want to buy? Even if they were already established with well paying jobs, owning real state is still a huge ball and chain.

Couple of years ago, owning a home was an absolute must have part of an american dream here. Now, not owning one is more of an enviable position: a sign of freedom, free weekends, ability to take advantage of opportunities wherever they may appear...

Love / Is the Polish wife the boss? [33]

The point is in relationship, among friends or in society in life altogether you never let anyone have the upper hand

that's pretty bad... at least in the relationship you should be able to have some trust. If you think by giving your partner an upper hand you'll end up with **** on your head, your relationships will be umm.. strained, to say the least.

Love / Is the Polish wife the boss? [33]

Really guys, what do you want to be the boss of? House decorating? Deciding what to cook for dinner? Holiday planning with the family? Whatever the wife is the "boss" of, it's usually because the man could not be bothered.

Now, if your wife decides where you'll go for vacation or what car to buy without consulting you, then you're whipped.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

We have an excellent Polish restaurant in town, Salt and Sweet. You couldn't drag young, sushi addicted people into it, even if you were giving away the food. Unfortunately, Polish food is associated with bland, potato laden fare.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

Hm.. I didn't think of it this way.
I have an open house on every third Friday of the month. It started with trying to limit my friends from popping in unexpectedly (and a motivation to get my house in shape once a month) to a houseband, vats of food and general liability concerns..

They love spicy stews; I did gumbo, curry, chillis, chowders, goulashes. All as long there is some heat to it.
But anything with minimal seasoning they find bland.

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

what were they looking for?

black market stuff, I guess. The neighbours must have been wondering how can we afford all these vacations. Not that their suspicions were completely unfounded. My father took pride in doing things "na lewo". Unfortunately, he didn't change much even after years is the US. He still has unhealthy disregard for authorities. Recently, he built an illegal dam, and filled his little lake with carp.

History / What was it like in 1989+ in Poland when the Soviet house of cards fell? [237]

I remember everything western was much sought after: music, jeans, etc. Eastern religions, music and philosophies were explored, but maybe it was a part of the hippie movement. I'm sure my parents struggled, but we lived in Warsaw, vacationed with tent all over eastern Europe in summers and went skiing in winters. Meat was scarce, but in retrospect we ate pretty healthy - fresh bread, fruits and vegetables. When I moved to US I was 16, I greatly missed the cultural scene and the ability to move around without the signifficant financial investment.

on the other side, I remember my mother constantly standing in long lines for food (both of my parents were engineers), getting busted for some czek lace we brought from vacation, our apartment searched by authorities, long haired friends getting beat up by huligans...

Nevermind, that was all before '89

Love / 'Battered husbands' - still a taboo subject in Poland [387]

Quote from PennBoy's artlicle: "Most of the time you have a homicide similar to this and typically the woman is the victim," said Officer Jason Willingham, spokesman for the Tulsa Police. "I don't recall any situation that is similar in recent history, for sure."

Life / Who is poor in Poland? [720]

I guess that means that a if person makes an average salary, he or she is not considered poor. But, if that person has a spouse that does not work, and one child, then they fall below the poverty level.

News / EU tribunal overrules Polish name contest in Lithuania [150]

f stop: If you allow this, next the Chinese'll want their name registered in their native alphabet.. and then where would we be?

In Lithuania?

That is Roman script... am I missing your point?

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

....to differentiate them from the real engineers.... :)

That I agree with! Engineering used to imply the knowledge of machinery, .. hardware. Software people are programmers. ;)
