News / Poland Parliament elections in October 2011 [944]

Disillusioned? Come off it, pawian. They are the biggest jokers on the planet. Do you really believe in manifesto pledges? They are self-ingratiating toss*rs with about as much interest in you or I as they have in cutting off their own fingers.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

Hehehe, good one. I don't know why but I often say hooey when I exert myself or lift sth. Like the Japanese say 'jo-issho' when they move anything. I have to remind myself not to do it when at my parents-in-laws' place :)

Good point, DE. Then again, some omit the r. For example, some say cheapa instead of cheaper. All the Polish students heard cipa and started laughing. She didn't know why. She lived in Poland for a year.

That could never have worked, Wrocław, as the people will have made the policies and not the politicians.

The Beer Party or beer parties??

They are conservative, not Conservative. Understand Polish attitudes, tradition and history and that distinction should be manifestly clear.

PSL? Poland needs a PMSL party, sth akin to Lord Sutch's Monster Raving Loony Party back in the day. It would never work given the, ahem, earnestness here.

You can buy Marwit's coleslaw in Żabka and it's also available in Tesco stores.

History / How do Poles feel about 10th anniversary of 9/11 [40]

I was working at a building services company at the time and can remember the company coming to a standstill. I remember watching the news with my mum later and being aghast and stunned just like most others.

However, I went down the Jesse Ventura road and started investigating it. Now I know the full extent of the evil that was involved in orchestrating it. Truly disgusting!

History / How do Poles feel about 10th anniversary of 9/11 [40]

I'm not surprised, pawian. Explosives, fires and beams blocked stairwells so many were forced to see those bodies. Had they not used explosives to detonate those buildings then more people would have escaped. Almost all as even a steel building fully engulfed in flames for 20 hours won't fall to pulverised material.

I really don't want to imagine the impact many would have felt as the buildings were taken down. RIP to any Poles and all those who lost their lives.

Language / VERY BASIC - this is/is this [7]

I'd be happy to help if I can. You are not asking only for translations but for an explanation of the mechanics of the language. Please remember that I am not Polish but I won't post you things which I am unsure of. Resident Poles are often on hand to help out. I've been living here for 7 years so the basics are a walk in the park :)

Nie can be tagged onto the end which has the same function as our tag/tail questions. Isn't it, can't it etc etc

For example, idziemy do pubu, nie? (we are going to the pub, aren't we?)

True, Vincent. I'll add that 'kim' is also used, i.e kim jesteś? This means, 'who are you?'

Travel / Train Routes - from Poland to Slovakia [12]

The lack of routes is tragic. I wanted to go to Zilina from Gliwice, a simple route on a map, but not a sausage. It's in dire need of improvement.
