Travel / Poland Travel Help, first time visitor from Singapore - ways to cash withdrawal, cost of meal in McDonald ... [58]

Chorzow

Whereabouts in Chorzow Paul? If you are sensitive to air pollution, take a mask with you if it's going to be hot. I was used to the pollution, but it can get too much in the late evening when the industrial plants emit most pollutants, as its cheaper for them to do so in the night I believe.... Could be wrong:)

Take care at night - it can get wuff.

The City Park ( which was at one time the largest in Central Europe) is alright if you like hanging out and having a beer or ten:)

News / Demonstrations in Poland in defence of democracy. [2554]

I can't believe

So if the EU is so terrible, why is the UK going to vote on June 23rd to Remain?

Facts? I well remember Poland before the EU, and what Poland would be like if Kaczynski and his cronies were allowed to run wild, uncensored.

News / Moody's credit rating of Poland unchanged, but outlook slumps [64]

a border guard post in the Tatra Mountains

I've hiked extensively in the Tatras. It's already full of "police" at every step, and this will only make the area less enticing for those who go there for solitude.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

reassures their anti-Jewish credentials as it were.

Couldn't agree more. The man, disgusting though he be, entered into an agreement with the US legal system and they subjectively shafted him. As Smurf says, if the system wasn't so sick, he would have been bang to rights and spent several years in the State Pen.

As the system wanted to cheat him, he cheated them.

None of Ziobro's business, but what the hypocritical Neo-Con right want. Luckily the supreme Court will bust a gut laughing.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

technically he's wanted for fleeing the country before he could be sentenced.

Exactly that. And somebody mentioned the child's father and how Polanski was lucky not to have been the victim of a vendetta. Apart from the fact that the girl was from an artists' family herself, and was able to rise above and live as a psychologically healthy adult, what about the father? He should have been bang to rights for child neglect.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Since when do convicted criminals in any society

Well, you live in America.........

To answer your question, Polanski lived in America, The court intimated that he would be handed down a lenient sentence if he co-operated.
And he clearly did. To the letter.

It's called plea-bargaining (as you know).

The judge was going to overturn that agreement and nail him to the cross. I don't have an axe to grind myself, except that a certain number of Poles always seem to be weirdly jealous of achievement and fame, and their only joy appears to be to try to bring greatness down.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

a nasty pedophile in prison

Yes, the bloke had sex with a minor, and preferred 'em young :((((

First of all, the context was clear at the time, and was dealt with. A deal was struck, and reneged on. Are you American? Polanski is not even Polish by law is he? But Ziobro has to "score points" with a certain section of society.

Thank God I don't mix with that group. Have they ever read the bible? Blatant and quite wicked hypocrisy.

News / Roman Polanski accused of unlawful sex with a minor [403]

Terrible. Another case of the (very) dangerous Ziobro. Trying hard to emulate Bolesław Rutkowski albeit in a modern setting. The controversial case of Polanski has nothing to do with Ziobro and his (so-easily predicted) witch-hunts, and it's another case of nationalist (post communist) Poland trying to put down its' greats.

Why else does such talent want to leave when they seize the opportunity?

But he refused to complete his prison term

Read the facts of the case before you spout untruths. Polanski entered into plea- bargaining, and was tipped off that the judge was going to renege on the agreed deal, after he (Polanski) had incriminated himself and pled guilty. It's really that simple. Most, if they had the connections to tip them off, would have taken the same steps for self-preservation. You would have gone to jail gladly after being double-crossed, would you?

In the meantime, normal peoples don't rubbish those who have helped to make their countries known in modern times.

Walesa and Polanski spring to mind.

And pray do tell us what you have achieved?

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

The Brexit campaign is largely based around xenophobia

No argument from me. That fact is why the OUT campaign is bound to fail. There aren't enough xenophobes in Britain. A lot of the immigant population will of course be voting with Boris, Farage et al for OUT- because they fancy themselves as little Britishers who need to protect their home against "those dirty foreigners."

Travel / Driving in Poland, are there any rules at all? [149]

Przewozy Regionalne has no ticket machines and 3 conductors for the same length of train

They are bizarre. Great fares between Gdynia and Gdansk though. 20 minutes. 4 zlotys. Why people who live and work within walking distance, and sit on their arse all day working, take their car is beyond my understanding. Obviously they earn well, so can afford a congestion charge.

prioritises public transport over cars.

I am all for that. If public transport is good. In Tri-City the SKM is run for profit (wrong in my opinion), and there is not enough stock available at peak times, so it's sardine time.

And there is no reason why they can't have automated ticket machines on the trains, other than that Solidarnosc would never allow it. It would remove the need for the conductor.

The relatively poor service is why people (inexplicably) vote for the much slower car. Sadly, only punitive congestion charges would reduce the Poles' love for his car, when he simply does not need it in Tri-City a lot of the time.

Life / How much it will cost approximately to have a dog in Poland? [12]

That's an important factor that people often don't consider. How will this breed of dog fit in with your lifestyle?

Exactly. Walking the dog is a pleasure. And it's the old cliche, but the dog walks you. It might be 11 pm but we are now going to the giant underpass to play football. He's like Ronaldo, without the cheating....

OP: You're really busy at the office right? Depending on your status, you could take the dog with you.

But:

You said you want to "adopt" a dog? Do you mean, as I suspect, you want to get a dog from the dog home?

If you want to rescue a dog, and don't have the time for it, that is a bad choice in my opinion. A rescued dog needs extra care and attention (call it love if you will). You would agree that a lot of them (like we would be) are totally freaked by what has happened to them. I couldn't spare the time to help a potentially maladjusted dog, and that's why I have a relatively expensive pedigree (that I know will behave in a certain way) and I crate trained him in the American way, so like a young teenager, he never misses me, and totally ignores me when I return:).

I really wasn't joking when I suggested a cat or a bird. I would love to have an African parrot, and all that stops me is that it would of course outlive me, which again would be unfair to the animal.

Priority: In your choice you MUST be fair to the animal as Atch suggests. Good luck, and this wasn't intended to be a lecture. If you want a mutt, go for it! Our rescued friends need our help, and that might require time and dedication (equalling cost)

Will neighbors complain if it's howling disturbs them . And it WILL cry.

Crate training and ignoring the wee beastie solves that - but you know that. Of course, the OP would have to choose a puppy though:)))

Yorkshire

Very excitable dogs, as Gumishu might testify. My dozy dog just came round the hall and sat at the entrance to the bedroom looking at me, which tells me he wants to go out for some reason. That's after only 5 hours sleep. Your canine pal can take over your life OP !:)

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

Seriously though, Podwawelska - available everywhere - is great when stuck on the skewer with onions.

kiełbasa szlachecka

Don't know that one. Will give it a go.

Food / Eating Kielbasa - how do you cook yours? [119]

types/regional versions of kiełbasa are good for grilling

Just fly to Britain and get some sausages. Any sausages. Great for grilling. Better than anything Polish, especially the beef sausages.
Historically, as you would know, Polish pork when locally killed and cured, was the business, but the EU "put a stop" to that:)

I remember Sopocka as late as 1994 being absolutely world beating sliced tucker.

Now it is (expensive) tasteless turgid rubbish IMO.

PS Kaszanka fits the bill very well though:)

a public library in Rumia

Thank you Mr Wiech. I will go and have a Butchers and report back to the forum. PS Are you sure it's Rumia railway station? I am there every Sunday for work and it's younger than I am - well not young then...but concrete and not red brick.

No? Neither could I.

News / Polish bishop caught with 2,5 promille [45]

how you show respect

But it's all so depressing Polonius. Even my neighbours admit to getting miffed at all the tuneless warblings of "Ave Maria" ruining the peace. The church does allow for some jolly good tunes - so why is it we seldom hear them?

Life / How much it will cost approximately to have a dog in Poland? [12]

But do people here always take dogs out for a pee?

Depends on the breed how often, but....yes.

That's the advantage of large dogs..... they can hold it for much longer. 12-15 hours for a lab. Though I would never do that of course. Small dogs can be trained as you suggest, but that's not a popular idea in Europe.

Why not take the dog to work with you? Or why not a cat, or a Mynah bird?:)

Life / How much it will cost approximately to have a dog in Poland? [12]

500 zl

I don't know anything about small dogs, and yes, if any of those lapdogs suit your lifestyle then they are fantastic. The Pomeranian would be the most expensive wouldn't he, because he is the largest, but his coat doesn't need the same care as the others I would have thought.

There are plenty of Pomeranians that need rescuing. No idea why - great dogs. The others are very fashionable (the Maltese terrier in number one for dog thieves for example).

None of them will eat more than 200 zl a month, but their diets are particular, whereas bigger dogs can eat things that would kill a person in pretty short order:)

I'm planning to adopt a dog

Great idea Erika. Depends on the size and breed of the dog? Obviously if it is a larger breed it eats more. ..... And as you know some breeds are more expensive than others in terms of vets' bills. Thinking of the bulldog for example here, or the retriever , with his hip displacement potential.

Other breeds, such as the perfectly awful miniature Yorkshire, probably cost a lot in terms of "le coiffure."
My lab costs an estimated (after 30 months) average of 500 zl a month.

News / Polish bishop caught with 2,5 promille [45]

I know it is about bishop but he got his punishment

A two-year (!) suspended stuff for a first-time offender

Mmm - 2 promil is a wilful offence. I wouldn't care to test the courts patience myself. Would you? 3 months in prison is a very likely result (or why would drunk cyclists be sent to prison for cycling from their home to the village shop?)

An obscene ruling in my view.

UK, Ireland / How might Britain`s withdrawal from EU affect Poles there and here? [474]

Lets Hope there is no Brexit,

It's 60-40 Pro-Europe Dolno, and rock solid.

This is a total non-vote (with plenty of people who are pro-Europe being too "busy" to vote - or the vote would be 70-30)

Only loonies and nationalists (remember them?) would vote out. As opposed to PIS voters, the British are not generally so xenophobic, as you will well know, having spent most of your life there.
