News / Stronger Russia, safer Poland, in world that globalize - is this be truth? [53]

They think of themselves as an imperium.

Simply the way to survive for a huge country with ~200 nationalities, most of which is indigenous on the land they live.

A 80 year old "babushka" may not have much to eat, or may not afford medicine, but she will chant "Krym nasz!" ("Crimea Ours") like a football fan. .

Let's look at Polish "babushka" once Lwów will return to Poland.

One of biggest advantages of democracy it that it allows the change of rulers without violence. Historically, rulers couldn't be changed in Russia without violence, because it's a dictatorship.

Do you think that changing rulers every few years is a must for any country?

News / "Shale Gas Revolution" will make Poland a Leading Country in Europe! [202]

Interesting article about Ohio...

seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/businesstechnology/2017702715_oh ioshale11.html

While big money is at stake, Ohioans fear their water is, too.

Fracking got a bad reputation in Ohio before the shale drilling boom started. Hydraulic fracturing can be used in vertical wells, too, and in 2007 Ohio Valley Energy fracked a well in Bainbridge Township.

Later, a report by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources said the company disregarded a bad cement job and went ahead with the fracturing anyway. Pressure built up in the annular space around the drill pipe, and gas migrated vertically through natural fractures in the rocks, the report said.

Then early on the morning of Dec. 15, an explosion lifted the two-story home of Richard and Thelma Payne off its foundation. The elderly couple were catapulted from their bed, according to a lawsuit filed later. The Paynes were not hurt, but 19 homes were evacuated.

Language / Ukrainian language similar to Polish? [236]

Russian media in Ukraine (tv, radio, magazine, movies etc) is a problem which must be changed to the Ukrainian language gradually over time.

Who will pay for this? ;) Who will pay for translation of films, and so on?

History / WW2 - The other side. What USSR, also that the Polish government has made not to admit WW2 [45]

Free education in the Communist propaganda machine sweet!

Hm... Someone who never been there trying to teach everyone? ;)

Yes, of course, it was nominally free. Another thing that it was paid from taxes - direct or indirect.

Schools was free all the time, for all legal residents (one of my classmates was citizen of one of Latin america countries and I never heard that he paid anything). Universities was free too, of course, for citizens (but you have to pass entry exams and your exam score should be in the top of the list of that year - usually there was 1.5-4 pretendents to one budget funded place in engineering specialities and up to 100 pretendents to one place in foreign affairs and international trade high schools). I don't think, though, that some average, not extremely bright, boy or girl would pass entry exams in MGIMO sucessfully - there was a lot of childs of high ranked officials (often not bright at all) that need some good start in their life, somewhere in ministry of foreign affairs or some embassy in Africa. ;)

Polonia / SHIPPING HOUSE CONTENTS: from Poland to Moscow. Suggest a company? [17]

I did not think about that , but i will check it out once we have got moved in , married and all the other stuff....

You'll need to think about this earlier, as usually relocation exemptions have quite narrow time frame. Good planning may simplify things a lot..

There is government program that provide some help and taxes/duties exemptions for people planning to relocate to Russia from abroad, but I don't know who can apply for this program.

Polonia / SHIPPING HOUSE CONTENTS: from Poland to Moscow. Suggest a company? [17]

its the most expensive city in the world to live in

.. as tourist. ;) And I'm not sure that Moscow still hold this "award".

I planned on paying about 1500 quid for a Mercedes van in the UK , and i am not too worried about making a profit on it when i sell it

BTW, did you check if any special cases in tax code is applicable for you (as person moving from abroad to permanent residence in Russia)?

Concerning moving your stuff - check at cargo.lt - you can find some truck there to move your container.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

The EU stands at the top in this regard and I don't think you would argue.

EU make few smart things and a lot of really stupid populist moves that either change nothing, either make things even worse on a global scale, but anyway increase expenses for EU manufacturers.

Hard to expect something else once persons with degree in theology and similar "precise sciences" trying to control energetic and industry of whole countries.

Up to recent time european RoHS was #1 in my personal list of applied stupidity, but recent German decisions about nuclear power for sure will drive it lower...

Life / IS Poland in danger of becoming the next multi cultural sink hole? [201]

Got it. ;)

But I'm really born near Arbat and grown on Volkhonka street, with windows looking to Borovitskaya tower of Kremlin (second building right to Big Stone Bridge if look from Lenin's Library side). Later we moved to southwest of city (Kaluzhskaya metro stn), and then to suburbs, looking for more living space, cleaner air and less crowds. ;)

So, I don't need to be more original. ;)

ok, let me ask you about Russians in the UK then. Are they welcome there? Is their culture treated as equal by the locals?

Cannot say anything about UK as I never been there in person. One of my former neighbours worked there for year or so as a construction worker, and had almost no problems with locals (but there was conflicts with some guy of indian descent that tried to show their superiority to every immigrant just because he was born there).

how many of those do you have in Poland?

I do not have anything in Poland. ;) I even was unable to bring polish coins for my collection last time - paid by card everywhere and never had polish cash in my hands. ;)

But we do have lots of them in Moscow. And many people is really annoyed.

what would you say about Poles going to live in the UK? is it enrichment or contamination?

Ask Britons about this.

I think that Poles living in Russia _enrich_ russian culture. ;) Not because russian culture is poor by itself, but because russian and polish culture and traditions somewhat "compatible". ;) What I cannot say about people from Middle Asia and Caucasus.

But at least they are trying to invent something that will reduce the negative effects of the industrial plants' pollution

Yessss!!! Looks like if I will dispose my garbage under the window of my neighbour, I also will be able to pretend to "at least attempt to reduce trashing" of my own land...

And nobody yet seen the bill that will come from those 1.6 billion of people later...

do you know the people in Siberia see their identity more as Siberian then Russian and are considering breaking off from the rest of Russia?

I and my colleagues regularily visit various parts of Siberia and Far East, and vast majority of people laugh very loud once another idiot starting to talk about "siberian nation" and/or invent "siberian language". ;) BTW, the last one I seen in person had family ending with -ko... ;)

You think that it is Ok to live in garbage and don't invent anything new. Why? Even if it takes hundred years - it is worth it, because when there is no oil or gas anymore, how will you power your home, car, boat,..?

I don't like to live in garbage. But if there is some "garbage" produced, we deal with them, doesn't try to export pollution to China and other asian countries like german "greens" try to do (never declaring this, though).

Let's see report and forecasts about German metals production...

businesswire.com/news/home/20110512005893/en/Research-Markets-Germany-Metals-Report-Q2-2011

Aluminium...
[i]On the downside, high electricity and environmental costs are undermining the long-term viability of German smelters, with Norsk Hydro reportedly considering the closure of the country's largest primary aluminium producer. Consequently, primary aluminium output will reach around 605,000 tonnes in 2015, close to 2008 levels, while exports should reach 1.89mn tonnes. However, apparent aluminium consumption will surge to 3.35mn tonnes from an estimated 2.70mn tonnes in 2010. Most of this increase will be supplied by imports, which will rise to 3.29mn tonnes in 2015 in addition to domestic recycling.[i]

So, Germany will be forced to import lots of aluminium... Most likely from Russia and China. "We are paranoid about nuclear plants, and producing enough electricity for smelters by other means is too dirty for us. Let Chinese people die due to respiratory diseases and cancer near coal power plants... We are so green, so green..."

Similar story with steel, silicon, rare earth metals, etc, etc...

Yeah... Some people is really desperate. ;)

Some of them blindly believe that someone else, real genius, will invent method to extract 2 kW of electrical energy from ~1kW of light energy that come to a square meter of ground during sunny summer day.... Or will figure out how to turn cattle fart to endless energy source for whole continent. The only thing that necessary is to pay much enough and wait long enough... ;)

Others have cold-war era propaganda stamps so deeply imprinted in their brains, so it obstruct the flow of new ideas and opponent arguments to unaffected areas that still can process it. ;)

Time will show what is what and who is who, anyway.

Because normal people don't waste time on inventing ways to destroy progress.

So, should I come to conclusion that german "greens" is not normal people? ;)

They have an instinct for money and what will be a good sell!

For sure... What a brilliant idea is to use "clean Earth ideas" to avoid any competition and pull some funds out of everyone's pocket just to subsidize "right businesses and persons". ;)

No doubt that German industry and engineering traditions is really strong. I just trying to tell that atempt to move to 100% of "renevable energy" will cost too much to German industry.

I have some selfish motives here - I do not want to see Germany purchasing increasing amounts of russian gas during decades just to climb out of a$$hole once "green madness" will prove their inconsistency. It will slow down development of my own country, but will create more "fat cats".

Just a fraction of funds that now goes to pockets of heavily subsidized solar and wind generation equipment manufacturers and owners, invested to new technologies of safe sub-critical thorium nuclear plants and advanced fuel reprocessing technologies would make Germany energetically independent for centuries and provide basis to technological growth. There is plenty of thorium on Earth, no need for expensive enrichment, by-products of thorium fuel production is valuable rare-earth metals widely used by industry. Processes by itself is much cleaner compared to uranium fuel cycle, much less minor actinides that is long lived and have litle practical uses.

But, for now, high-tech suicide way is choosed. ;)

So, let's see what happens in a 10-20 years...

Green technology augments, but will never provide, the bulk of energy needed for a modern civilization.

What will happen to nuclear power in Germany?

Looks like "green" propaganda is so massive and successful, so Germans pay that "green energy tax", vote for nuclear plants shutdown, and not even asking questions (yet)...

Fortunately, there is people who don't forget basic math... ;)

Fritz Vahrenholt, who heads a subsidiary of energy group RWE that operates wind farms and biogas plants, says that the fluctuations of renewable energy could lead electricity prices to skyrocket and hurt Germany's economic competitiveness.

"If we set our goals too high and dream of renewable energy covering all of our energy needs, then in the end we're not going to have a steel, chemical, or machine-tool industry anymore - and then the Chinese will thank us," says Mr. Vahrenholt.

Green technology is the future...and as we Germans say "Vorsprung durch Technik"!

As someone smart said - "So hard to find a black cat in a dark room... especially if it's not there."

Can you fool the nature and get some energy from wind generators if there is no wind? (BTW: When I driven from Belgium to Poland last time, I saw lots of such beasties along the roads - still or idling at about 1 rpm. No wind... We passed Berlin ring when I saw first one rotating at full speed).

Can you get some energy out of solar panel during night?

As some smart people calculated, large wind generator installed in windy area can generate about 20 times more energy than was used to produce materials and then build and install it, during their lifetime. Vibrations and powerful infra-sound from wind turbines is also not very good for neighbours. After 20-25 years you'll have to dismantle and rebuild it (for large ones, smaller turbines usually require rotor replacement every 5-8 years). New composite materials may somewhat prolong life cycle of rotors, but not very much, and for sure will make it more expensive.

Solar panels (with silicon produced using Siemens process) not even able to return energy spent for their manufacture during whole lifetime (!!!). In addition, processes used in production of solar panels is NOT environmentally friendly (really dangerous, to say the truth). There is some processes in devellopment that require much less energy to produce solar grade silicon, but feedstock materials for this processes is quite rare and expensive, compared to Siemens process. AFAIK, Germany does not have such resources at all.

All renewable energy sources is not guaranteed. Absolutely. So, if you have grid with generation only from wind/sun - you need some energy reserves, like hydro-accumulating stations or something similar. Which part of Germany you ready to flood to build such stations?

Why?

Too long story to tell at once. Too much foreign currency in hand of government works not very good for average russian citizen. Too strong rouble is not making life in Russia cheaper as well, and definitely making manufacture of many things here not economical.

What is good for oil companies and Gazprom is not so good for russian middle class.

Well...we just have to watch Russia to go "somewhere"...

Russia never choose obvious ways. ;) Let's look after 10 or so years what really happens.

For now, germans is so heavily brainwashed with "renevable energy" tales so looks like they forgot how some basic mathematics work. ;)

You can't stop the future ;)

Nobody can stop the future. But the way that current German govt leading the country is way to nowhere (IMHO). Nearest 10-15 yrs will be very profitable for some businnesses... And then whole generation will work hard to get out of situation created by sect of "greens" and their (not so charitable) supporters.

It will be really good for Russia if demand for gas and oil will decline. (I mean good for Russia, but not for oil/gas oligarchy and politicians).

German gov today decided to put billions into the electro car industry...watch this space in the next decade!

Yeah... First yor govt make Germany a largest importer of electricity on continent, and then try to double load on electrical grid introducing electric cars that will need to charge very often.

As far as I know, average cost of wind-generated electricity is about 3 times higher than stock prices of kw/h. And at 7% of wind generation in grid balance your wind generators installers already crying that it is real problem to find places to install more.

Either I'm overlooked smth, either "Y2K problem" hoax that put billions in some pockets will look like child game soon.

PS: Real fun will be after 20-25 yrs, when you will "suddenly" figure out that you need to completely replace worn wind generation infrastructure... And you need _much_ more energy for this task that it can provide.

Germany needs rougly 300.000 engineers. ;)

So, looks like Germany have too much extra bank clerks and lawyers.

It may change soon. Germany make "energetic sepukku" right now, stopping nuclear power plants. Soon german heavy industries will have much less demand in engineers, and much more demand in construction workers to demolish abandoned industrial buildings.

;) Germany should have something to pride... It would be a disaster if Lada will beat MB... ;)

Small but important difference - it is enough to have some common tools and not very well educated mechanic to keep Lada running until they will rust completely. But it will be great fiasco if you try something similar on MB car. ;) Important thing for Russia, where you can easily find yourself in broken car >500 km away from nearest service station.

You are so right...when I want high-tech I first think about russian and serb stuff... "made in Russia" or "made in Serbia" has that special ring to it!

I perfectly understand your sarcasm. ;) Usually russian high tech is not useful for average household. It either flies too high for them, either leave too few survivors. ;)

But this guy is not the first people who telling me similar things. Looks like engineering career is not the most wanted way to go for smart and perspective youths. Not only in Germany, similar opinions from guys moved to UK.

.. except for functional toilets.

Maybe, maybe... You need to fly to ISS to see functioning Russian-made toilet. ;)
