Law / IT department (computer programming) - Opening up an Office/Business in Poland [53]

So - I can see why someone would want to keep it in-house.

by keeping stuff in house, you can often save more money, you retain the knowledge, rather than pay to educate another company's employees
what is more when it is reorder time, your client may approach the outsourcer direct and cut you out of the loop completely

Real Estate / Foreign investor, properties in Poland, walk away from mortgages? [209]

Who has given you advice about the value of your apartment? first time I've come across somebody in this situation. Where is your property?

what I think he means is if you take out a mortgage on a 100,000 euro property, you will have to pay back 200,000 euros over the life of the mortgage

it is normal however it gives you the advantage of having somewhere to live whilst you pay off the mortgage :-)

it is not clear though

UK, Ireland / Can i get insurance for a British car in Poland? [16]

providing you are willing to make the trek back to the UK once a year in order to get your car MOTed, you are much better insuring in the UK

the price of car insurance in Poland is twice the price compared to the UK

bad roads, loony drivers, anyone can drive anyone's car if the car is insured and they have a licence, car theft and many people making bogus claims on the insurance have all boosted up the premium

Life / Funeral arrangements for a foreigner in Poland [28]

you seem to have real anger issues with women
and I myself have a low opinion of men who bully women

you are also a fool

Can a foreigner purchase a cremation or funeral ahead of time in Warsaw along with some legal will saying you want to have your remains stay there?

As you did not mention for whom you needed the plot, I can only hope that it is for you

Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

a friend of mine was a receptionist at the Sheraton in Warsaw in the late nineties

the hotel had a book of registered prostitutes who could 'work' at the hotel

to get registered the girl had to provide a copy of her ID card so if one of the guests got robbed whilst she
was on the job
then the hotel management knew who to send the police after

obviously if a guest picked up a lady of the night at a bar or club and took her back to his room
then the system would not work as well

Hotel Forum in Warsaw used to be called Hotel Wh0re-um as the ladies of the night would call up male guests in the wee small hours

touting their trade

A practice which is absolutely rife in China at the moment. Even business travellers who visit China with their wives and families
can expect to get woken up in the middle of the night being offered 'female companionship'

Life / Funeral arrangements for a foreigner in Poland [28]

I see lots of opinions but no facts.

we are terribly sorry but what were you expecting?

I do not have any departed relatives that I need disposing of on the cheap
I doubt that anyone else is in the same boat either

please forgive us for our lack of encyclopaedic knowledge on the subject of pauper's graves

perhaps you might want to contact your embassy and ask them?

one thing is for sure if the embassy gets involved and starts shipping stiffs across borders, someone is going to get a very hefty bill

there is always the budget approach involving duct tape, a length of carpet and a lay-by

perhaps leaving the dearly departed on a park bench to be dealt with by squirrels and passing crows

Love it do you work in the same field as me. I wonder??????

possibly Miss

I am not sure what you do

if you were a PF member you could send me a personal mail and we could correspond
without the great unwashed being privy to confidential information

footnote: that wasn't meant to sound sleazy by the way

Or just sign it over to a medical school. They pay for a memorial service and you help the next generation of doctors learn.

the irony would be that chances are you would then get sliced up by a medical student attending the English language course.
It is common knowledge that they get the freshest stiffs

close to your death, you might want to assist them by writing words such as 'leg' on your lower limbs :-)

I assume cremation is the cheapest option. If you aren't religious or really care can you just have your remains disposed of?

not sure about the costs but not popular in Poland

originally reserved for the Pagans hence not a Christian way of being sent to make one's maker

I attended a service at a Polish crematorium, I should have filmed it

the coffin was sliding away on a conveyor belt and the attendant was banging on the window to get everyone's attention to look
at the coffin

he then started waving a dirty handkerchief at it to wish it bon voyage

meanwhile all the dead girl's family were sobbing and wailing

just incredible

Genealogy / I'm half Polish American, but I'm very Patriotic about my ancestry [47]

Delph, why you always come at people at with this ****? Poland was still partitioned at that time, didn't exist on the map so what the Poles born in Austria, Russia or Germany weren't Poles anymore?

it is getting a bit wearing

you need to find another axe to grind

perhaps put some of your energy into the charity work which you expound to undertake rather than wind up Pol Ams

Love / First date in krakow [22]

Bunkier Sztuki would be the place to go

it is warm, chilled out and full of the most bizarre and frankly hilarious exhibitions of modern art

always lots of topic of conversation

then off to the cafe for a cup of hot chocolate

if it is a first date it is a mellow venue

Travel / Is it safe to travel to Poland? [194]

it appears that there is a bus tour in Warsaw

polandtours.net/?event=offer.detail&offerId=12479

cheap it is not but at least you get to see the city

and one in Krakow

cracow-life/poland/krakow-tour-bus

if you are used to driving in Australia please be aware that there is a lot more traffic on country roads than back home
also Polish drivers are very inconsiderate of other road users. in fact if you ask a Polish driver their advice on
the topic of road etiquette and who has right of way they will always reply 'I do'. 'I always first, I always have right of way'

That's why they come though - 17k PLN a year buys you a medical degree.

erm... euros perhaps

I will laugh my ass off when your student loan funder wakes up and realises that your course is not worth a damn and stops funding

hopefully they will do it when you are in your third year, you arrogant pr!ck

this has already happened to one American medical student who I know. I felt sorry for him as he is a nice guy.
if the same thing happens to you, I will laugh long and hard

News / Poland being the powerhouse of Europe [40]

Poland will not become rich through labour intensive industrial production - it will however always have agricultural resources (including a good water supply) which will become increasingly important in the future. That and a combination of high skills, a very strong welfare state and sovereign investment.

the rain fall in Poland is not great. Central and Northern Poland is one of the driest regions in Europe. in fact you have to travel to Spain to find such low rainfall in an EU country

the fertility of the soil is not great either and the harsh winters make farm land far less productive than in Western Europe

plus points are the fact that there is a load of shale oil in Poland, oil and natural gas, a steady wind for electric generation and lots of coal

political stability, a well educated workforce and a reasonable level of law and order helps too

Love / My Polish wife got married to me but she's still not in love? [34]

Either time or about 150mg of 3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine.

why stop there?

go the whole hog and dose her with largactyl
just make sure that she does not plan on operating heavy machinery in the near future

my spider senses do start tingling when someone who has never posted before suddenly starts pouring out their heart

Work / Moving and working in PL as a teacher (near Zory/Katowice) [53]

some friends came back from Norway
the minimum wage is 60 zl per hour

I found it pricey but not astronomical when I used to go to Sweden on business
beer was unbelievably expensive 15 zl for a tinny from a supermarket and 40 zl for a 400 ml beer in a nightclub
however I am not sure if that is such a bad thing. less A&E admissions, more tax revenue for the government, less liver failure blah, blah, blah

the price of houses is dirt cheap and far less than in Poland I seem to remember when watching one of those property prn shows prior to the crash

USA, Canada / Funky Polak - Polish-American rapper from Kielce inspired by Polish immigrants [15]

Polish rap is stupid for the same reason Chinese people dancing the Polka is stupid.

some homegrown Polish rap is good

the text is meaningful and talks about the hopes, fears and aspirations of young Poles
the US rappers seem to concentrate how hard, rich, talented they are etc

Funky Polak is rather awful

Liroy was Kielce's number one rapper back in the day and was called an OG by no less than Ice T

Law / Setting up small business in Poland? [191]

cambridgemark

Delph would have been the perfect person to answer this question but the mods suspended him

having said that he would have also gone into a rant about the state of the teaching market in Poland

when you say employ another teacher do you mean employ or simply cooperate with?

please tell us more about this other teacher

Work / Greek Speaking Jobs in Poland [25]

Hi

how did the plans of working in freight forwarding go?

Don't expect riches beyond your wildest dreams
call centre work in Poland is notoriously badly paid and as for them providing you accommodation, forget it

call them up and ask them how much they are paying and then post it for us to read

sad but true

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

There has to be some happy medium here. Look at Romania, the land ownership law is such a mess that people are frightened to buy land in case some 'heir' c

crawls out of the woodwork.

If 'heirs' are going to lay claim to property, they have an annoying habit of waiting until the property has been renovated or developed and then they pop up like a jack-in-the-box

It will be difficult to attract investors to any country where there are doubts over land ownership. It is not as though these guys have really contributed anything to Poland's economy post WWII. This is not directed against Jews, it is against anyone who buggers off from Poland. Then waits until the rundown property that they owned has been spruced up and then lays claim to it. The Poles ought to pass a law that people have until December 31st 2012 to lodge a claim or the unclaimed property will revert to the state

Food / Hawaiian Kona coffee to buy in Warsaw [12]

Anyone tried Kopi Luwak? Is there anywhere I can have just one cup? I don't want to spend a fortune on something I might not like. After all, it's processed by cats

iyou can get it in some thai or indonesian restaurants
the going rate is 20 PLN per cup

a smooth coffee with the consistency of chip shop gravy
if you like a thick cup of joe then look no further

braces himself for dozens of cat litter tray jokes....

give me strength....

UK, Ireland / Tale of a Polish Family on Isle of Man [43]

These dole stories are just that, stories.

not sure. but I will verify

you seem very sure of your facts

if I were to tell you that if you work for four years in Spain you are entitled to 1000 or it might even be 1200 euros dole for two years,

you might think that was bullshit too
