Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

You only have to look at the anger in the UK, as more young people are denied the right to buy and live independently. Its a huge vote loser for any party in power.

Hard to say that anyone is being denied a right.

Genealogy / How to legally change your name in Poland? [15]

The only reason you would want to change your name is because you do not want people to know your true name.

There can be other reasons. I used to know a lady who changed her name because she wanted to sound more dynamic and further her career. Back in the 80s when she did it it kind of made sense. Also I know a Polish guy who changed his name because he wanted to disassociate himself from a particular family member for good reasons.

The OP needs to go back to the country who issued his passport and make the change though. It will probably be easier than in Poland where, believe it or not, a judge has to give permission for the change!

If the OP plans on using his new name here in Poland, he should check with a lawyer here first, especially if he already has a NIP etc.

History / State People in early Poland? [10]

Never a good idea to rely on Google Translate etc. what was the phrase you translated into Polish then back to English.

Life / The unacceptable side of Polish culture [48]

It just sounds like a bar fight to me. Plenty of those here in Warsaw and plenty more out in the sticks. Good that somebody intervened though

Language / Polish/Ukrainian words similarities [209]

For example, here's the word for "blue" in various languages:

Blue is a nice but awkward example - various languages have anomalies about it. Many are beautifully expressive.
I like the word błękitny.

One of those linguistic strange attractors - like mixing up 12 and 20 in second languages.

News / Lech Wałęsa's empty fridge? [9]

If you don't get fed at home, you go for a McDonald's, as Bill Clinton said.

Anyway, it seems that President Wałęsa isn't quite as much of a 'new man' as his look-a-like version who used to push the shopping trolley in the adverts for MarcPol.

News / Polish families are urged to establish themselves in Norway : Taking children away? [36]

It appears that some Polish families have not quite come up to the expected standard for caring for thier children in Norway. It could be considered anti-family to remove these children but Norway considers children as people in their own right with rights that must be protected. They are not possesions.

Exactly. This Norwegian group should be careful of what they wish for. There are plenty of people from Poland living and working in Norway. If people want to go, they can already. People likely to take advantage of this offer are not exactly the cream of society.

News / Lech Wałęsa's empty fridge? [9]

He can afford domestic help. I suspect he has someone, in which case if his fridge is empty he should have words with him/her.

Travel / New Years Eve in Warsaw (city sightseeing, restaurants) [21]

As usual I'll be going somewhere in a group - venue to be decided. As usual, the bar owners are saying that they're nearly sold out and we should book now, wonderful buffet, dancing, whatever but in the past those places have usually been disappointing. The best places to go in Warsaw tend to be the ones that don't make too much fuss.

And of course the concert in plac Konstytucji is usually good.

Food / Cheese - first made in Poland! Kujawy actually ... [4]

The Zakopane cheese is one of the better ones - lovely grilled. Most of the rest is just factory-made pap. I do wonder what per-war Polish cheese was like. In the UK (where there are over 700 types) it took years to get over the damage that wartime production needs did to the cheese-making trade, and that in a country that post war was more or less capitalist.

Life / Is Poland a poor country? [578]

Does anyone know,I have paid Polish Zus for the last twenty years if i go back to the UK as i was born in London can I Claim a UK pension.

As Vincent says, you'd need UK stamps for a UK pension, however any shortfall in income that you would suffer by being on a Polish pension would be made up by the minimum income guarantee.

Food / Best Restaurant in Warsaw [23]

No - it's the same restaurant - a favourite with the good folks of the SLD - I've seen Aleksander Kwasniewski there a few times.

Forget your carpet shop down the road, it's still the best restaurant in town.

News / March for Poland's democracy organized by PiS 13th Dec [49]

the fact they are against current establishment in Poland do not mean they are about to establish totalitarianism regime in any shape or from

If you belive that, you'll believe anything. This is the guy who went into a coalition with politicians who openly admire General Franco.

Food / Best Restaurant in Warsaw [23]

Your another sure bet is Fukier,

Fukier is still good, though I prefer Stara Oranzeria.

Avoid Pod Gigantami - apart from being a favourite of Jaroslaw Kaczynski, they have several restaurants and make the food centrally and then distribute.

Life / How many children is a good number in Poland? [12]

but how does that sit with being Catholic ... ?

Indeed - for Catholics, birth control (whether pre-or post-conception) is forbidden by the Church. But it isn't usually taken seriously.

News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

He didn't ask about GDP! He asked about things that are made and produced in Poland and those are significantly less.

You do know what GDP is about? Or do you?

Not all factories were like that, not even majority and given proper care and time to readjust would be able to compete on the world market no bro!

Tosh. Most of he ones that weren't taken over and dragged kicking and screaming into the modern world failed.

News / How much Poland's economy grew up since 1989? [32]

No, GDP is hugely up. Perhaps you'd prefer to return to factories producing things that nobody wants to buy and staying open even if they make a loss.

News / PiS wants symmetry for minorites living in Poland [71]

divorced Polish parents are banned from speaking Polish to their kids.

By whom?

banned from speaking Polish at work in Ireland.

Fair enough - if English or Irish is the official language of the workplace.
So let him offer the same benefits, fast track to citizenship and protection against discrimination that the recent Polish influx to the UK has received.
