Love / Help, I need advice about long distance relationship with Polish guy in Poland [8]

Hi! You know, Poles are no monolithic block and as a result, everybody is different. Nobody too will be able to give you "advice" since nobody knows either you or the boy.

It seems to me (I'm a woman) that you were very quick (= sleeping together on the 2nd day), which implies (my opinion) that the guy is pretty quick and therefore very much likely to pick up girls very easily. I am sure that in Poland he does not live like a monk and sleeps around.

Also, as you say, problems to find employment in Sweden for him and for you, as a black girl, Poland is not the easiest place to be so I don't think such a couple could work out.

Of course, I may be wrong but since you have posted in a public forum, I'm answering ;). I would suggest that you don't get obsessed byu this guy (whom you don't know in fact) if you don't want to be hurt.

Take care! :)

News / Polish priest sacked by Vatican for being openly gay [54]

@Pol: once more some nonsense! Most people are heteros but some are homos, some people are white, black, yellow, tall, small... and there is nothing they can do about it. Why should some not be accepted because "different"? Obviously, (all) religion(s) are not tolerant and discriminate. The Polish priest accuses the RCC of being not only homophobic but also paranoid.

Yes, the Vatican is "shocked" because 2 consenting adult guys love each other but is not shocked by all those fat paedophile pigs abusing kids in their churches...

The Polish priest is better off away from all those paedophiles and I wish him and his partner the very best.

News / Polish priest sacked by Vatican for being openly gay [54]

I have just seen him and his partner on tv. They look great and happy together. If homophobic and backwards Vatican do not want him any longer, he'll be better off. The guy is too intelligent and too kind to belong to a sect anyway. I am sure that he has opened doors and there'll be more to come... We are in the 21st century and no longer in the dark Middle-Ages. I wish him and his partner all the best :).

Life / Water and Heating Charges in Poland [14]

I live in Ochota too (but I don't think the price differs as per the neighborhood) and the price sounds ok to me. It corresponds to what I pay.

Roughly I pay around 100 ZL per month, so what you say "makes sense" ...

News / The shame of Duda making late night visits to Kaczyński [79]

If any president (not only of Poland) wants to talk with someone, they do not need to go anywhere, they just call ;). Even presidents have a private life and time off so they visit friends and relatives, they go to movies, on vacation, shopping ....... Let's be serious!

News / The shame of Duda making late night visits to Kaczyński [79]

@Wielki: it would be the most decent thing to be a minimum objective. Things are not either white or black ;). Personally I was very shocked (and I wrote it a lot in PF) by the huge amount of money misspent on that stupid referendum? Sorry but even the most stupid village idiot would have said that there was no way 50% of voters would vote. In a lot of countries, the government would have had to resign as a consequence.

As a taxpayer, I am more shocked by government's misspending of tax money than by the fact that X meets Y at night ;)

News / The shame of Duda making late night visits to Kaczyński [79]

@Delph: Duda has won the election and as a result has become president ;). This is democracy and if you mean to live in Poland, you have to respect Polish people's choice. Of course, foreigners may have their opinion (I do have mine too) but they must respect democratic choice. If polls are confirmed and PiS wins in 4 weeks, will you finish in a mental unit because of severe depression? ;).

PS: what about the huge money Komorowski has thrown away on his stupid referendum? You have never commented upon that. With its great participation of 7.80%, it has been the most expensive referendum ever organized in EU. The said money could have been spent in much better ways and I know that most Poles believe the way I do... ;)

News / The shame of Duda making late night visits to Kaczyński [79]

@Ironside! not only that ... but as they are friends, isn't it normal to see each other, to go to each other's place, to have dinner together, etc etc.. ?

Even so called political opponents do socialize with each other. They argue with each other, they insult each other in public but nevertheless very often they socialize with each other. I have known quite a few (very) high level policitians, both in Poland and elsewhere and yes, very often they socialize with their socalled opponents. 99.99% politicans are hypocrits and only the very naive believe in them. I have stopped to believe in any and I do not expect them to change my life. Either PO or PiS or even others in Poland, it shall make no difference for my own situation... They are only motivated by and interested in their own wallets and their carreers and the h...ll with the rest.

Not normal that Delph and a few others (who by the way are not even Polish) get so emotional re Poland's politics. According to all polls, PiS should win on 25.10 and that's it. No difference to me!

Life / Spanish engineering student is moving to Bialystok - cost of life and information about the city. [38]

@Jardinero: my, it sounds "great"! ;) Yes, a weather to turn into an alcoholic in order to try to avoid depression... The lack of light is very difficult to put up with (including for me) much more than the cold per se. If properly dressed, heated, fed, we can put up with cold but nothing to do against lack of light other than to do like birds do and migrate to nicer climates ;).

Travel / Free Transport in Warsaw - 'Car Free Day' [10]

In Warsaw, today exactly the way it is normally ;). I travelled 1. from Centrum to Gocławek and 2. Gocławek to Ursynów and 3. back to Centrum (for those who know Warsaw) and nothing different. What did they expect? Do they think Poles and more generally Europeans, since EU thing, are stupid and will give up their cars to travel by most often overcrowed and unreliable public transportation because Brussels have said "so"????

Instead of such crap nobody cares about, why don't Brussels bureaucrats try to deal with real problems? ;)

Work / Cost of living in Lodz, is 2450-6400 PLN salary enough? [25]

@Dominic: when I said "new trend", I meant in PF because in real I don't come across this situation. Yes, the cost of living in Poland if we want to buy other things than bread, potatoes, onions, sausage, cucumbers and apples if very high and not much cheaper than what it is in Western Europe. In Western Europe a lot of things are not more expensive or even cheaper than in Poland. Furthermore, a foreigner used to different standards and to use different products, shall spend more than an average Poles does. I personally buy mostly foreign (not only food) products so I spend a lot....

Living abroad when alone and with no family network to rely on is not limited to a room, bread, potatoes and a few beers with friends but should also include a little bit of savings each month to cope with emergencies. What about dental services ? This summer, for 3 minor things, I had to spend close to 1,500 ZL. In case of sickness (even something very minor) how to buy medecine? No big deal to spend 140, 150 or more at a pharmacy. NFZ reimburses very few medicines and if so, it's very little. What about if we break something in the apartment, or one's glasses, watch, etc etc ... All these cost money and therefore need to make enough money. Also, all those young single ones, they'll need some minimum of social life, to go away once in a while and here again, money is needed. What about money to return home for Christmas, or for emergencies?

I know that in general they are very young so they dream that they'll make it on 3 coins but of course they are wrong. Poland is like any other country, in order to have a minimum of a life, it's necessary to earn enough money.

Futhermore, crap work paid 3 peanuts in Poland won't look serious in a cv. To recruiters, it'll look like losers who had to accept any crap work because not able to find anything else. Sorry but this is life! I've been within and with international companies for over 25 years and I know the way they feel. Personally, I would not hire anyone who had worked for 2,450 ZL at some crappy job in Poland - it shows lack of ambition.

Work / Cost of living in Lodz, is 2450-6400 PLN salary enough? [25]

@Dominic: thanks for the good laugh! For sure, on such poverty wages, no way to attract Polish girls (or boys) or even to drink a few beers with the buddies. More seriously, what's the point of moving to a totally unknown and difficult country half around the world to live like a rat? Unless most desperate, who would do it?

It seems that we have a new trend in PF. It used to be the style "I am from India and X company offers me a job in Poland with a salary of 42,000 a month. Could I make it in Poland on such a salary"?, which I personally found stupid and abject to Poles. Should they dare spending a couple of minutes on the net, they would realize that the majority of Poles make and have to manage on peanuts. Now, we have another trend; those offered 3 coins and willing to come to Poland to live like rats.

@To those: in order to have a decent sort of life, without worrying about money, you need at least 4,000/4,500 CLEAR per month (if you are single). Less than that, forget it and don't say it'll look "good" on your cv because it won't. Serious recruiters are not impressed by lousy jobs in some 2nd category countries as Poland and others. You won't get a prestigious cv this way. To any serious recruiter, you'll seem a loser... Don't waste your time! :)

Travel / Free Transport in Warsaw - 'Car Free Day' [10]

This is going to be everywhere in the EU, nothing typically ... Polish ;). As like most people in Warsaw, I have a monthly card so I don't care if today "darmowy" ;). I seriously doubt that people used to drive their cars will take public transportation today.

Once again instead of taking care of real problems, EU gives us some bs...

Life / Poles hard working or just born lazy. [58]

"lol". I have noticed too that all Poles are ... managers. It's like in the Mexican army which has nothing but generals ;). What also strikes me is that often there are a dozen employees "working" in a tiny area which would require only 2 or 3 people.

USA, Canada / Finding a job without work permission in the US [32]

@USS1: yes, you do! Only people from EU countries may work without work permits. In order to be issued a work permit, any potential employer needs to convince Polish authorities that they cannot hire locally (not only among Poles but also among foreign nationals allowed to work). Your English won't be a + since people from UK and Ireland may work in Poland without work permits. Unless you have extraordinary skills and experiences not to be found in Poland, no way!

Sorry but it's the way it is in the US for foreigners ...

Life / Spanish engineering student is moving to Bialystok - cost of life and information about the city. [38]

Hi! Have you already a dorm room? If not, be aware that places are very scarce and students need to reserve well in advance (the academic year is about to start). I also know that some students have prority because of their parents' low incomes. You cannot just arrive and get a room. Now, check private accommodation but of course it'll be much more expensive than university dorms. Good luck! :)

Work / Lang Company fired me [17]

@Delph: Yes (although no name mentioned) but the OP has started with complaining about the school and even has indicated name of the school and where it is located.

I don't know either OP or the above but I have heard so many cases of "native speakers" being drunk or having severe hang overs while on their jobs. Such scum give bad reputation to the whole teaching profession. For sure, as the above member said, it takes more than being a native speaker to be a teacher but whose fault is it? Who hires such people? It beats me that anyone barely literate from British underclass can be a "teacher" in Poland. It's a joke and in such a case, yes, better to hire someone competent and serious from .... Ukraine ;)

Work / Lang Company fired me [17]

@Ajb: Absolutely! No language school can be sure in advance of what work load they'll have. This is most fluctuating, clients come and go. It is very likely that especially small schools in remote areas are too ambitious, expect a lot of business (?) and hire "a lot of" natives. Said natives arrive and soon find out there is very little work (with corresponding money and of course with different conditions as those announced ;)) or no work. As to private lessons that they expect to find, let's be realistic, they don't put bread on the table (too few of them, too much competition, students not willing to pay much and cancelling all the time .. = more trouble than anything).

I am aware that a lot of schools don't behave properly towards their teachers but sorry a lot of those (young) natives are so naive that they don't think a second before accepting any bs job in rathole "towns".

Work / Lang Company fired me [17]

@Polskiee: of course, it's terrible for you but you know no job is 100% safe. Also what kind of contract did you have? Even if real work contract, as I said, you have no guarantee. Maybe client(s) complained about your teaching or personality (you know Poles are not used to speak their minds so they're all "smiles" but a lot happens behind back ;)) or maybe the school has lost clients and can no longer give you work.

It is very risky to leave home to take a job abroad (especially so with those tiny "language schools" in the middle of nowhere in Poland)

Good luck to find another job! If you are good English teacher, it's the right time to find work as the academic year starts in October. Instead of wasting your time in PF and others, do look for work! :)

PS: if you got fired only after a few days's work, it could be seen by them as a probation period. In contracts ruled by Polish labor law, employees always have a 3 month probation period during which they may leave and may get fired without notice.

Study / English primary schools for foreigners in Katowice [15]

@Smurf: sorry, I thought you were talking about ... public facilities. When living in Poland, everybody knows that there are not plentiful. Cheaper private schools too have waiting lists. The only way is to approach the expensive ones (not necessarily the best though ;)).

ps: no, I don't teach English...

Study / English primary schools for foreigners in Katowice [15]

@Smurf: this is not ... Fantasy Island! It is very difficult to get admission to state facilities since very long waiting lists. I know a couple in Warsaw who was turned down because the father was unemployed at the time so at home and could babysit (although of course he had to look for a job ;)) and also because they were foreigners (from Russia). Places are very limited and subject to severe criteria. I know tons of families who cannot qualify so inspite of moderate incomes, they have to send their kids to private facilities.

I know, when people have no experience in a matter, they just think that things get "automatically" done but the reality is completely different ;). In Poland, people don't "just come" and have their kids admitted to state facilities.

Real Estate / Cost of room in Warsaw? Where to look for accomodation? [31]

@Blueblack: sorry, maybe it's not a matter of ZL. Where are you from? You know, even in Western Europe or in the US, it is not easy to rent when a foreigner and looking different. At my place, it's often the case although most people are not racist so in .... Poland!!!!

A concrete example: I know a woman in Warsaw refusing to rent to Asians because she does not want their "stinking cooking" Inside her walls....

Let's call a spade a spade!
