Russian culture

Not only in Russian or Ukrainian cultures does alcohol play a role. In Polish too. The only alcohol that can be advertised in public places in Poland is beer. provided that at least 20% of the ad surface contains the info about harmful effects of drinking.

Beer ads are popular. On the other hand, anti booze ones not so much. I have found only one series of such ads directed at women.

  • Alcohol is a sexist swine - it treats women worse.

  • I am more important than your kids

Jadwiga, Queen of Poland

Yes, indeed a comprehensive list as backto has noticed. Thank you, you get a point.

The thing on the wall is the Black Madonna, Matka Boska Częstochowska icon.

Yes, exactly.
Atch, you had doubts about it but let me tell you it is an obvious guess for a typical Pole, so whenever you see an obscure picture which looks like a portrait and there is a round shining object at the top and a smaller one beneath and you can`t discern features of the face because it is so dark, then it must be Black Madonna.

let me add to it Wandę co nie chciała Niemca ;)

Yes, chronologically, Wanda is No 1. :)

It's Smierć Ellenai by Jacek Malczewski, this painting comes from 1883.

Yes, exactly, the full painting below:

And a new riddle: What event does this painting show?

those are paintings by Andrzej Wróblewski. Are they both from his Execution series?

Yes and yes! He was sort of haunted with the scenes of German occupation.

Now, an unusual quiz. Name 4 or 5 possible Polish heroines of this painting. I don`t want you to guess correctly, we can do it at the end, but first try to recall all Polesses who died young and were sincerely mourned, either by family or by their peoples, both in history or legends. Who that person is isn`t important. Guess who she could be!

man, where do you know it - I NEVER even heard about her

Because Atch and Chemikiem are the bestest! :):) They are real role models for other forum members.

One clue: it is enough to think logically, and you can find all the answers. :)

I guess Museum of Aviation in Kraków - when I was there no German planes were on the exhibition

Yes, there are now - old and modern.

I think it's part of a Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 on display in Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego, Warsaw.

Yes, Messershmitt, but in Krakow. Sorry, gumishu was first .... but half a point for you, too:)

Now, can you recognise the Polish artist by his style and theme?

Real Estate / What do rolna-budowlana land means? [7]

Not anymore, since 2016 noncitizen can't buy agricultural at all (as far as I understand)

Yes, they can if they are EU citizens.
biznes.gov.pl/pl/firma/cudzoziemcy/chce-prowadzic-biznes-w-polsce/proc_209-nabycie-nieruchomosci-przez-cudzoziemca

And even a better site

The main restriction is you need to be a certified farmer to buy more than 0.3 hectare right now but they changed the law recently so soon it is going to be 1 hectare.

Let`s stick to the East, then. :):)
Russian culture - theatre, ballet, opera, choirs are known and appreciated in Poland. Once I saw bilboards which advertised 3 seperate events by Russian artists at a time. Moscow City Ballet performed last autumn and yesterday I saw new ads.

Szał Uniesień - Frenzy of Exultations by Władysław Podkowiński.

Yes!

The painting caused a big scandal in Kraków of the time .

Yes, the artist was accused of spreading pornography, received insults and abuse from decent Krakowians :):) which led to his depression and a desperate knife attack on his masterpiece.

Who is standing?

Real Estate / What do rolna-budowlana land means? [7]

rolna-budowla

Such a plot is divided into two parts - building and farming. Building part is usually smaller.

Can a EU citizen buy rolna-budowlana plot?

Yes, but not bigger than 1 hectar unless you are a certified farmer. .

Such posters remind us that Ukraine is one of our closest allies

Hey, someone should start a thread about it.

Because they put a one poster in the middle of nowhere? Are you for real? lol

Please, show some impartial intelligence instead of that narrow-minded nationalist bile. The poster is only a symbol of certain values, it doesn`t matter if there is one or many.

regardless of what nationalist idiots might say

There are hate posters too.

We remember Ukrainian genocide on the citizens of 2nd Republic by OUN/UPA

Yes, beautiful! The charge of the Polish light cavalry was so incredible that immediately after it French officers started begging Poles who survived the attack to testify they also had taken part in it. :)

Yes, but don`t forget to try to guess that Nazi sign riddle.

Ukrainians put that poster on the border: Thank you, a friend in need is a friend indeed (rough translation), after Poland backed and joined EU sanctions against Russia.

It's been only 5 hours so I'll wait till tomorrow.

It is so noble of you.

That would be Rejtan by Jan Matejko :)

Exactly, displayed in Krakow. The gold coin on the floor is one of many used by Russian diplomats to bribe Polish aristocrats and szlachta to agree to the partition of Poland. Feking traitors! :):)

Pawian, Is that supposed to be some sort of camouflaged car/primitive tank in post 2530?

Yes,it is. Actually, it is a replica, so there are two exhibits like that in two seperate museums in certain city.

What is the full painting called?

Nice pics but you should have done a bit of translation to them because without it, they are wasted on non-Poles.
To tell the truth, this thread wasn`t created for Poles, actually, who know perfectly the culture of their country, but mainly for foreigners who would like to learn sth new about Poland.

Travel / Which Poland's city is LGBT friendly? [43]

All the bigger cities are fine, but Warsaw is the best choice for LGBT

Yes. Parades are held in all major cities and medium ones join too despite difficulties. E..g, the mayor of Nowy Sącz blocked the parade this year.

But other cities and towns allow LGBT parades
e.g., Częstochowa.

Private love messages - new love or old love

It just occured to me I made a mistake - after being displayed in the street, they cease to be private. :)

Apart from new or old love, there is also unrequitted one. It seems a conflict is barging in again although I promised nice atmosphere - sigh.

What do unhappy males or females write:: Forgive me/ come back to me/ I love YOU and our children/ I am sorry for everything/ Let`s give ourselves one more chance/ I know we can`t fix everything but we can start everything anew etc etc, sometimes supplemented with various poetry

Cool, I'm from the II republic, this stuff was taught to me in Polish sunday school in the UK.

Well, it is an interesting issue. You lived in GB where you attended that Polish school not to forget about Poland. And it gave wonderful effects, indeed. But you remembered it because you thought it was indispensable so that you wouldn`t lose your nationality. However, Poles who actually live in Poland meet such stuff every day anywhere and they don`t need to know/remember it all to feel truly Polish. They don`t fear becoming expats in their own country - they just pack their baskets and go to church, young and old, from 1 to 100, I took hundreds of pics of them. So, don`t blame Poles for not remembering such details as what horseradish represents. Which is better - learn the theory about Poland in a foreign school or actually put it in practice in Poland? :):)

so I've got an easy, more feminine one.

Yes, feminine indeed. :)

Yeah and its in the krakow museum,

The flag is exhibited in the AK Museum, while the horse in the National Museum, both in Krakow.

OOOkey, now I see I made it too difficult. Sorry. Let`s change it.

And let`s change the rules a little, too. First of all, provide the name of the city. If possible, also the museum and a short story/context of the exhibit:

Neither of my grandmas ever mentioned any symbolism, maybe it's a regional thing?

No, that is the old religious tradition behind Easter basket - the presence of staple products was backed with the faith context.

what you did with the flag or whatever after 1939

No, the flag came into being in 1943. If you were able to find out where it is from, then it should be a piece of cake to learn where it is now. It is one of the most valuable items there. We are talking about the original.

OK, whether you are playing or not, let`s wait with this flag.

and another one:
and remember, we are still in Krakow
