USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

I'm still dying to go back though :)

I know, I know. I'm only going for a week. That's ok because I can't wait any longer(and that's all the vaca time I have left :(....As the date draws near, I'm getting more and more nervous. It's nuts!

Has anyone been to the Tskie brewery in Tychy? They don't conduct tours do they?

Does one pump his own gas in Poland?...."do pełna" (fill er up) right?

History / Why did communism in Poland fail? [180]

This is true. My ex-wife's family visiting from Tarnopol would say the same thing.. I remember driving to Katowice to go clothes shopping. The stores seemed to be much better stocked there than in Wroclaw.

I also felt very safe there.

You're right. I did too.
I also agree with you on Cuba.

that dictatorship is known as work.

What a stretch! At least you get paid.

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Part of the problem in the US is the preponderance of inexpensive food that is full of calories and devoid of any nutritional value. I'm not a lib but the poor in our country are developing diabtetes at an alarming rate. The thought of all those limb amputations, kidney failures, dialysis treatments, blindness, strokes, heart attacks which will ensue as a result makes me sick. And who will pick up the tab? The taxpayer.

Life / What is with Polish and their indoor plants? [26]

Me too. I took my plants to work! I worked, back in the 90's for a Swiss pharmaceutical company. One day when I came back from lunch I met 5 people "touring" my office admiring my plants! They told me they had never seen anything like it. :)

History / Why did communism in Poland fail? [180]

Yes. People here - often ones born after it ended and on a different continent condemn it as if it were a hell on earth. Even though it achieved a lot.

What did it achieve? I was in Poland from 1978 - 1985. I will acknowledge free education and health care as two things communism achieved however regarding the latter things were not always that rosy. If you didn't come with cash or something of equal value, your chances of getting babcia or dziadek into the clinic so they can be seen by the profesor were slim to none. The only ones who liked communism were the ones who were profiting from it.

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

Unfortunately, for the American masses Polish food(along with Russian, German, Hungarian, etc) just isn't sexy. It lacks the cache that the Mediterranean cuisines have.......just sayin

Sugar has ZERO nutritional value

This is true.

I mean glucose, fructose, corn syrup. I am not talking about natural sugars found it fruits and vegetable

These are natural sugars and they all breakdown into glucose which stimulates insulin secretion. Hyperinsulinism is the problem. Cut your sugar consumption!

Language / Czesc/pa vs. no czesc/no pa [18]

for me it's sort of like saying "well-then bye bye". Like you said sort of like a filler.

Life / Back from Poland! I belong there! [16]

Why all the "warnings"? Rysiek is a big boy of sound mind and he has a dream! To have a dream is to follow a dream. Go for it Rysiek! Don't mind the nay-sayers.

Love / Latest relationship drama in Polonia/USA... [39]

Good. Listen kolego, I know this is unsolicited advice but you're gonna get it anyway. You sound smart and savvy - use it to your advantage. I'm sure you've made allies within her family(or at least you've scoped-out the situation and determined who you could make an ally- right?) So, as you yourself said, use your charm throughout the entire family and win them over on by one. This will make dilute Mama's power, win you much-needed "friends" within the family and hopefully reduce the overall tension. You look good; Teściowa(mother-in-law) looks good, GF feels good and all is well.......just sayin ;)..Good Luck and break a leg.

Love / Latest relationship drama in Polonia/USA... [39]

I've been there and back. IMHO the best advice is to charm and finesse them. Never go toe-to-toe with the mom and her side. You will lose and it will not garner you and browny points for the future. Take it from this American: charm, finesse and take f-stops' advice and smoke the peace-pipe stary :) btw it's much more fun.

Work / Polish salaries - New statistics [38]

And doctors salaries are so low that qualified doctor sometimes prefer to work as pharmaceutical salesmen because they can earn more

That's very sad and soooo wrong :)

Life / Back from Poland! I belong there! [16]

I loved seeing the land , my relatives , and everything else!

Good for you Rysiek! In less than two months, I too, will visit Poland after almost 25 years away! In the meantime, I've discovered two new cousins and a ciocia whom I can't wait to meet (not to mention the Polish beer I'm dying to taste ;)

the fact that daughters usually turn into their mothers,

50% of the time they turn into their fathers :)

Blood is thicker than water, especially in Polish families.

very true

Food / What's your favorite Polish beer? [870]

I'll be coming to Poland this September and I'll make sure I try some. The Tyskie Gronie sounds good. I love pilsners.
