UK, Ireland / British men don't really like women [137]

Who changed the title of my thread? That's just rude... It's Off-Topic Lounge, I think I have a right to name my thread the way I want?

Mods, change it back to "British men", please.

UK, Ireland / British men don't really like women [137]

There are so many threads and posts about Polish women on this forum that I thought for a change we could get to know something about British men (as they probably comprise a majority on this forum). I don't know how they are like, besides those from PF. But I found this article in The New York Times:

nytimes.com/2002/09/01/weekinreview/the-world-what-is-it-about-british-men-cheap-drunk-and-stiff-lipped.html

It shows what American/Canadian women think about British men and British men about American women :)
Nothing nasty, I guess, just some observations (?).
Judging by what I've read on this forum I could agree with this one, for example:

English men -- for all their suavity and charm -- really don't like women.

;)

Love / THE POLISH DISEASE, wanna marry a Polish girl ? read on... [197]

They are not happy simply to end a relationship if its not working..they want to turn all your friends against you , destroy your life , and rip you for everything you have....

What a bullsh1t... I'm still friends with my ex-boyfriend and we often chat on Gadu-Gadu. What kind of people do you meet...? Geez...

but the women....spawn of the devil...!

LOL

I haven't honestly heard or read in my entire life so much whining about women, so much generalising or simply chauvinistic comments, as I've read on this forum.

The funny thing is that for example Russian men speak very well about Polish women. So maybe there's something wrong with you guys? Just a thought :)

Two Polish girls I knew in the past 2 years made me more miserable than I have been for years.

Jesus, Barr, you've been writing the same comments about those two Polish girls over and over again in every thread somehow concerning Polish women. Maybe meet more Polish women and then make an opinion?

Unbelievable...

UK, Ireland / Common pitfalls for Poles learning English [187]

it only matters in the proficiency exam.

ordinary folk don't pay attention to the difference.

Oh... OK. Thanks :)

ithere is the point that there are regional variations in the way people use grammar.

americans don't use present perfect when they can use past simple.

*faints*

UK, Ireland / Common pitfalls for Poles learning English [187]

no. present perfect is up to now

up to this point in time i have lived here for ten years.

present perfect continuous allows the obvious. i can see that u are not going anywhere.

i have been living here for ten years and i don't intend to move yet.

both are ok, but the grammar gives flexability when writing, speaking.

So it doesn't really matter which you use unless you want to convey that you don't intend to move yet (and then it's "have been living")?

What about questions? Does it matter if I ask: "How long have you lived here?" or "How long have you been living here?"?

;)

I have problems with perfect tenses. Still I don't get the idea of it.

Oh yes, I have the same problem :/ I don't think I'll ever learn to use tenses in English correctly ;P
I just don't get them...

UK, Ireland / Avalon method course vs Conversation with a native speaker to learn English? [37]

Yep maybe I just start a general course for FCE.

I think this is the best choice... I remember that my FCE course helped me a lot.
As for vocabulary and listening skills - watch films and TV series. Your ear will get accustomed with time.
Reading books can be useful too :)
My younger brother also read a lot of comic books. His vocabulary is really rich :)

this shows something important. if one is interested in the show and willing to follow the story then learning will be easier.

Definitely.

I think watching TV series is a good way to learn. But you have to choose "easy" ones at first.
For example, I've watched all seasons of "Lost" - there wasn't that much talking there, but a lot of action and dialogs were simple. But I don't know if even today I'm able to understand everything what Lorelai and Rory say in one of their "AK-47-style" conversations in "Gilmore Girls" ;)

I'd have problems with British stuff too, I guess, as I watch mostly American films and TV series.

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

well, i just mean that Americans like to show off their affection more openly then Poles...

But... affection towards strangers? I don't get it...
I think I've read here on this forum comments of Americans who wrote that Poles leave too little space between people during conversation or on the bus, so I thought they need more space and don't like any physical contact with strangers ;)

i'm talking about strangers, not a man you love...

Oh... o_O
Then you're right - touching, hugging and cuddling with strangers... eewww xD

and it's a mild version, let's not exaggerate it...

?

I bet he's too scared to come back now.

Probably xD

well, popcorn is an American, the girl is Polish...

Oh come on, pgtx, most women in the world love touching, hugging, cuddling - Polish women are no different ;) Of course, if they are with a man they want and have feelings for.

he invited her into his home in a woeful attempt to seduce her. she being smarter than him is sticking to the original offer while taking him to the cleaners at the same time.

That's the way I see it too...

I have the answer. Unfortunately for those curious, you will have to use your imagination, because I am unable tell you anything more.

Hey... That's not fair... And it's cruel ;D
At least explain why you're unable to tell us anything more ;)

He pulled us into his story, talked on and on with us, and then he just dumped us like we mean nothing. That's so wrong. ;)

Men :/

Love / THE POLISH DISEASE, wanna marry a Polish girl ? read on... [197]

I would say it's a warning to Eastern European women not to marry Western men in general, not only Americans or Americans of Polish descent ;)

Love / THE POLISH DISEASE, wanna marry a Polish girl ? read on... [197]

LOL

So you wanted to marry this:

And you got a real woman instead! Wow! :D

youll be stuck with a person that you have NOTHING in common with be it sports music, whatever

Judging by what you've written you decided to marry a stereotype and you married a girl because she was "cute, blonde and Polish" and then you realized that you have nothing in common with her? What a surprise! Way the go, genius! :D

Oh yeah, and you're so witty too ;D

Stantheman, it seems you're paying for your stupidity now. If you're so miserable in this relationship then get a divorce. If the woman you married isn't the so called gold-digger then she's probably as unhappy in this marriage as you are. So you'll do both of you a favour.

Btw, I've found perfect T-shirts for you:

zazzle.co.uk/i_love_my_polish_wife_tshirt-235364071845687048

xD

i grew up watching the american people saying 50%of all marriages end in divorce

How come if American women and men are so perfect?? :D Do they all marry Polish people from Poland? xD

I just read some of it, you got married at 40. I would say this plays some significance.

Indeed...

Dude just pick up a copy of "Men are from Mars women from Venus" that should straighten out most of your issues.

True :)

Just out of interest - what's it like to be 39 and still have the interpersonal awareness of a 17-year-old?

I was wondering about that too ;)
I'm also curious how old is she...

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

Paulina, u seem 2 be fixated on the sex thing, he mentiones wanting to know her feelings more times in his first couple posts (those long 1s) then he talked about touching or sex.

Not really, it's Popcorn who has given this thread a title "Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch." lol
In his first post there's no mention of her feelings, it's only about touching, his needs and his feelings. He writes later about his doubts as far as her feelings are concerned, but most of the time it's about touching. So it's even more weird because he's trying to touch her although he even doesn't know if she has any romantic feelings for him. He wrote they talked for hours, he drew portaits of her, went to movies, out to eat, she's now living in an extra room in his apartment. But all of this can be said about a pair of good friends.

He wrote:

If age or money was an issue, I'm sure we wouldn't have got this far.

"This far"? lol He can't even hold her hand! They didn't kiss even once. Apparently she didn't say that she has any romantic feelings for him. And he calls it a "relationship"...

Bewildering...

Yeah but he's a young boy all gaga over this girl, he's not thinking clearly. Typical. :s

You think he's a teenager? o_O

Maybe she'll stop by and talk to us! :D

THAT would be interesting :D

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

I think she may well read this one.

Well, it doesn't look like this to me:

She really wanted to know, so I told her the polishforums.com. I said, you could probably figure out where to go on the site. And she did. She types in the browser bar and the page loads. She begins scrolling down, then points at this thread right away and says is this it? I say, oh, is that something I might say? I smile. So she goes to another thread "How to find an English speaking boyfriend in Poland" and asks "is this it?" Great, now she thinks I'm gay. But, I guess that would be off topic. I probably should start another thread.

I see it as "I know this poor sap fancies me so I'll string him along and get a good free ride whilst it lasts"

Sure, it's possible.
But it also seems he isn't that much interested in her feelings towards him. It looks like he's only interested in touching and this is the only problem he sees - that there's no touching ;)

Don't you find it weird that he didn't ask about her feelings before she moved in? That they didn't kiss even once? She lives in a spare room - it's not like she's sleeping with him in one bed.

So why did he think there's going to be a romantic relationship? It's just weird, I'm confused by this story...

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

It is interesting getting this take from the girls here.

Well, it looks like his attitude is like this: "I give you my spare room, I give you food, you give me sex." LOL

I know I'm simplifying but it's pretty obvious that she's not attracted to him and has no romantic feelings for him. So what did he expect? He wrote that she knew about his feelings from the start. So how was she behaving back then, before moving in? Did he even ask about her feelings before she moved in? Did he ask her to move in or did she ask him?

We only know his side of the story so I guess we girls try to think about what's her side of the story too ;)

This is something not many men have had to deal with.

Yeah, it's a weird situation...

But she is still taking advantage of him and the situation and it is up to her how much of this she wants to put up with for her free ride.

I guess we'll find out in two days, if Popcorn is willing to share her decision with us ;)

I still can't believe that he showed her this thread. Lol.

As far as I understand he didn't, he showed her this forum, but didn't confirm that this is the thread he had in mind.

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

I must admit I agree with shewolf... If you didn't say that a romantic relationship was a condition of her living in your spare room she could think that it was a friend's favour. If you feel used then tell her to give you some money to pay for the rent or at least for the food. If she can't cook then tell her to do the dishwashing. Although this whole thing probably won't work as you clearly want a relationship, not friendship.

I would love to hear her side of the story.

Me too, it's always good to hear it to get the full picture.

When I was in college and struggling, I rented a room in this guy's big house, in exchange for keeping the whole place clean.

Eewww, that's grose ;O

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

Well, I find it deceptive to not tell a guy there is no romantic attraction.

Well, she gave you most of the nonverbal signals one can think of... And she didn't claim that she had any romantic feelings for you? But I agree that when asked directly she should give a direct answer.

when she has found another place to stay.

It's possible ;)

Popcorn, you did not answer the question so I will ask again. How old are you?
The first thing that came to my mind when I read your initial post, is age difference, I would guess you are 40+ and she in her early 20's.

I was wondering about that too...

Love / Polish Girl Doesn't Want To Touch. [240]

Popcorn, I think there are all kinds of possible explanations:

1. She just wants to be friends with you.
2. She had traumatic experience with men (as Zetigrek wrote) and that's why doesn't want to be touched and doesn't want to explain why she doesn't want to be touched.

3. She's using you (a room for free, food for free).
4. She's a virgin or she's ashamed of her body (but I don't know if that's the case as you wrote that she's "sexy").

5. She doesn't believe you have feelings for her and thinks that you tell her bs just to have sex with her.
6. She's a lesbian and she's not aware of this lol ;)

I don't know any other Polish girls, is it cultural maybe?

I don't think so, not to such an extent.
Judging by what I read here on this forum Polish people are not as easy-going and open as Americans. But holding hands for a couple in Poland is pretty normal. There are people who may find it childish and laugh about it. But it seems she doesn't want anything that can be associated with a romantic relationship.

So it looks like she doesn't see you two as a couple.
I am a bit of introvert myself, but I would behave like her only in such situations, I guess:
- when a guy is too fast for me, and I need time to decide what I want,
- when I think that a guy is doing some sweet talk just to get me into his bed,
- and when there's no physical attraction and I have problems with saying this to a man as I don't want to hurt his feelings, because I like him.

Four months for some people maybe enough time, for others - not enough. It's really hard to say, as I don't know this girl.

I think some more info would be useful, like:
- when she moved in to your place, was she already aware of your feelings and your physical attraction to her?
- how old is she? What's the age difference between you two?
- does she have a job, any money?
- did she have any boyfriends before?
- how good is her English?

She should know better than to take me that way

Are you sure? How long have you known each other?

Access is the issue here. You suggested teasing and some cheerfull drink. Ok. I'm taking that seriously.

I think you should simply confront her, tell her that you don't understand the situation and what is it that she wants. Being friends or romantic relationship. Maybe she will be more relaxed after a drink and will be more talkative. I don't know if trying to touch her when she's tipsy is a good idea. She may understand this in the wrong way - that you want to make her drunk and more "accessible" (and it kinda looks like it).

The next phase I just laughed with her about it.

Then maybe don't laugh about it anymore, talk to her and tell her how difficult this situation is for you. Tell her that you prefer her to be honest with you.

That's my two cents ;)

History / Poland provoked Germany to start WW2 by mobilising first [94]

Pity that Poles now insist that the exact reverse is true.

I don't understand. According to you Poles insist that insisting on free elections wasn't Churchill's and Roosevelt's pleasure?

And I bet that Poles actually did murder Polish patriots after the war. Perhaps you'd like to address the actions of your own nation before you criticise other nations?

Oh, I think that if you live in Poland you know well enough that those actions are addressed and criticised by Poles (even very very much so).

Or are you one of those Poles who insists that none of the millions of members of the Polish communist party were actually Poles?

You mean Polish United Workers' Party?
According to English Wikipedia:

In the crowning time of the PUWP's development (the end of ‘70s) it consisted of over 3.5 million members.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_United_Workers%27_Party

I don't suppose that there is any chance of you actually telling us the price that Poland was sold for?

Maybe for neutral relations with the Soviet Union? To appease Stalin?

We all know the price that Poland sold its Ukrainian allies to the USSR for (59 million Roubles)

What are you talking about?

but none of us have ever heard the price which the USA and Britain received for selling Poland to the Soviets. Could it possibly be that there was no sale and that is why no price was paid?

It's just an expression - in this context "sprzedana" (sold) means "betrayed". It's not like Stalin paid them in gold LOL

I guess they just "gave away" Poland to Stalin for free.
Or maybe I don't know about something?

But that would mean that so many of you Poles are liars!

No, I think you just don't understand what they mean.

History / Poland provoked Germany to start WW2 by mobilising first [94]

Which is why they insisted on free post-war elections.

They could insist all they wanted, but that didn't change the fact that those elections weren't free. Those elections that followed after the elections of 1947 were even less free.

Love / Polish girls and jealousy. They always suspect I have other gfs. [33]

They are into monogamous relationships, and they mean it! ;)

True.

no, low self esteem

LOL
No, they just know men:

What a shame, it doesn,t mean us guys have to be.

What the eyes don't see, the heart doesn't grieve.

Haha, so it means we must be careful and not get caught.

You see? :)

and they don't trust because they know in their own hearts how they are... always looking for that greener grass.

We all know in our hearts how people are in general. If someone isn't in love with a person she/he is with, usually he/she will look around consciously or unconsciously for someone they'll like more. This goes both for men and women.
