News / Mass immigration to Poland - article and response [479]

As I said...there are THOUSANDS. In all fields.

One thing missing from your list.
Why aren't these people practicing their respective fields of expertise in the countries they come from?

Do you think any of their inventions/contributions would be possible under Taliban rule? Do you think that their research will continue after Europe has finally succumbed to the hordes of medieval types of muslim faith? Cuz that's where things are heading. At this point, without vigorous anti-immigration policies Europe as we have known it is going down the tubes. And if you get to keep your mp3 player the only thing allowed will be a copy of Kuran.

Nations don't survive by succumbing to other nations. That is a clear fact shown in history and noticed as far back as the times of Aristotle.

Allahu Akbar to you.

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in the UK. Ch. 5 - Racism [259]

Diversity and tolerance are the two final suicidal steps towards the death of a culture where the diversity and tolerance occur. History shows it clearly. Heck, this has been clear in my lifetime.

Life / If I say POLAND, you say...? [100]

You're giving Poles too much credit. they are a drop in the bucket in the US.

American jobs went to mostly to China, India, Mexico and such. And if that wasn't enough millions of Mexicans are pouring though the so called US border. They aren;t even sure how many. 10 million? 20?

That has little to do with Poles and everything to do with the greed of large corporation. America is on a downhill slope and so people will try to pry some of the last remaining dollars and then there's gonna be a big bang, and even less reason to go to the US than there is now. And that also has nothing to do with Poles.

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in the UK. Ch. 5 - Racism [259]

I know that there was. But I was aiming specific at the Nazi period.

Racism is not limited to a specific period of human history. What you wrote about is just one of the most extreme manifestations of racism.

Polonia / What About The Poles In The Netherlands? [102]

About Greek men: the first recorded homosexuals in history were Greek men, did you know that?

and probably the first recorded condemnation of homosexuality as unnatural, by Plato.

Darius! Shame on you. You know very well that the Nazis just needed a scapegoat to blame all the mishaps of Germany on.

WTF are you talking about?
So there was no anti-semitism in Germany before 1930's? Before 1914?
Check for yourself before you pull more conclusions out of thin air.

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in the UK. Ch. 5 - Racism [259]

You lost me here, what do you mean?

that's one of the leading arguments some use - that racism is not a natural phenomenon because children do not display it. Well, children grow up and then many do.

If you don't know anything about another culture (what did the Nazis know about Jewish culture?

I think after a few centuries they did know a bit. At least they knew what they didn't like about Jews, whether the dislikes were objectively justified or not. It is not possible to be a racist in relation to a culture you have absolutely no knowledge of.

Maybe one even wants to do those things at home. But strange fact is that with racism the bravest words often come from the safest places. Racism is often more rabiate in small villages with hardly or no newcomers at all than in the big cities.

I take it you're white.
Try to take a trip by subway in Harlem one night.

Heck, go a a DMV in NYC to renew your driver's license and you'll see how racism is doing well in large cities. When in the area visit Whitesone. An Italian neighborhood where houses for sale would be burnt if neighbors saw too many off color people showing interest. Heck, I couldn't rent a place in Astoria, Queens because the hood was Greek/Italian. I had to have a Greek fella help me. It was a very racially defined neighborhood but then, I could go to work and leave the door to the house unlocked.

Racism does not mean people will have necessarily fight in the streets day in day out. But they do try to keep the company of their own. Even in your country which seems (on the surface) to be an interracial nirvana, your country has seen some of the sharpest increases of emigration of white Dutch people. And no, they do not tend to go to live in Zimbabwe or India.

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish migrant in the UK. Ch. 5 - Racism [259]

In short, most racism is coming forth from unfamiliarity.

This is just a meaningless PC slogan. It has no value whatsoever. In fact a lot of people become racists when they come to know others better and decide the others, their culture, habits and values are undesirable. How would Christians like polygamy accepted by Islam?

So would you say the reason for slavery was that people were unfamiliar with those they enslaved? Were Jews newcomers to Germany just a few days before Kristalnacht? Did Germans kill Jews because they didn't know enough about them?

IMO racism is a natural biological tendency and it has been a part of human evolution. Hence we have... human races. We tend to organize ourselves into various groups, sports teams, hobby clubs, linguistic groups, nations and countries. Sometimes racism will manifest itself as unwillingness to be close to the others, sometimes it will take more drastic forms.

Saying that young children playing together and without regards to racial differences has a meaning for racial debates is like saying that combing one's hair is unnatural because babies are born bald, and speaking should be banned because babies cannot speak either.

A lot of physical and psychological qualities in a human being are a matter of the stage of life. Children are born with some qualities that vanish, and they acquire other qualities as they grow up and age. Anybody who has even a faint idea of human developmental psychology will know that.

Some say that racism is whatever-phobia. Yes it is. One of the most powerful driving forces in biology is fear. Its function is survival. That's why we eat (we don't want to die of hunger) or withdraw out hand when it's exposed to fire (we don't want our hand to be burnt). That survival instinct extends to entire groups of people, with division spanning and crossing various lines. And it is also true when it comes to things such as skin color, family tradition etc. The tendency has been to preserve some of the defining qualities of various groups. That's why white people have been killed by non-white natives around the world, and that's why whites killed even more non-whites.

Btw. do gays fight for sexual rights of the straight people? Such as the right to be free from exposure to homosexual exhibitionism?

Genealogy / Valentine Stolarz, Anna Banas, Jacob Mastej, Francis Bil [30]

Old relatives may be not there, but their descendants are likely the members of the site. If you know the area where your great grand parents came from that would be a start. I'm not saying you'll have the family history in a day or a week, but you gotta start somewhere.

I'd say contacting people older than teenagers would give you better chances to get meaningful responses.

Good luck.

Language / I NEED TO LEARN POLISH QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY! [45]

Any suggestions?!

ASAP is a very generic term.

Quickly is possible if you care to speak a few words without the ability to have a coherent conversation. Of course your mileage may vary but to speak somewhat OK it will take at least months.

I don't mean to discourage you but the language is among the hardest in the World.

For now I'd concentrate on a few canned phrases and expressions. I'm sure the effort will be appreciated but don't expect to understand their replies. Then take it from there.

Good luck.

History / Does Poland deserve credit for the 1989 Revolution? [87]

I actually meant the recurring theme about "Poland betrayed".

Now again, the "bad" Germans "stole" the glory from the polish freedom fighters....

The subject is "credit" not theft.
It seems that we're moving into the times where Germans will be praised for their peaceful efforts to get hold of some corridor, only to save Poland some 50+ years later by abolishing communism.

Bad, bad Poles. If only they agreed to be annihilated.

Always somebody else to blame

Poles don't not blame the big 3 for the expulsions of Germans. Germans don't either.
Germans, and you, blame Poles.

History / Does Poland deserve credit for the 1989 Revolution? [87]

Well...they did it, didn't they.

No, they were the beneficiaries of the expulsions imposed by the US, UK and USSR, and executed by the Soviet Army, of which Poles were a small fraction.

Oh please...Clarkson makes jokes about everybody

I don;t mind jokes, and I don;t mean Clarkson.
I mean your continuous comments about Poles complaining.
Have it occurred to you that perhaps if Germans stopped complaining about the war they started and lost Poles would be left with little to complain about Germans?

As for the credit for the fall of communism, I'd place East Germans somewhere at the end of the parade. They were the staunchest supporters and brown-nosers of the USSR and when the real wall was already down they put up a great show for the camera. Becuase by then cameras were already allowed in the good ole' DDR.

Bratwurst Boy:
That sounds soooooooo polish!!! Complaining...blaming..

No, soooooo Polish is blaming the British!

We had a few spats on the forum where Poles were blamed for the expulsions of Germans. Blame was painted all over Poles by both of you.

BBoy, you went so far as telling us how you grandma could not even put her shoes on before being expelled.

Could you fill us all in on how that is Poles complaining?

History / WWII - who really was the first to help Poland? [900]

Hitler offered Poland also the possibility to become part of the anti-comintern pact already in 1935, what would had made Poland actually part of an anti-soviet alliance.

Hitler also made an offer, accepted by the Soviets, to create an alliance against Poland.
How long did that last? Were Poles to blame for the collapse of that alliance too?

Genealogy / Any Polish Tatars here? [95]

Relatively lots of Far East influence in Polish population.

Some direct from Asian tribes (going as far back as 13th century), others indirectly via Russians who were under Mongolian boot for about 300 years, some through Ukrainians who were also geographically closer to peoples of Asian ethnicity on one side and neighbors of Poles on the other.

I can tall you about the genetics of it all because I don;t know enough. If you're iterested in exploring the subject I'd point you to two research areas:

- history of Poland since 1240 and then with emphasis on Poland's wars in the East.
- [genographic.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html] - The Genographic Project

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

"Workers in the federal public service continue to have the highest rates of absenteeism in the country, and they are shooting upwards in step with an economy-wide increase in days away from work over the last 10 years.

That may, may not be true in general, but I'm an IT though I don't do work for Stats Canada.

I took 2 full sick days and 2 hours (left work earlier) in the last 5 years, worked on average 3 weeks over time each year (including weekends, Christmas and New Years Eve) and visits to server room at 2am after receiving automatic notifications about break in attempts to the servers. I took a combined 3 weeks vacations during those 5 years, and obviously I'm on 24/7 availability.

Other than that, yeah, I can't complain.

Your life was tough because of your situation, being in a foreign culture, and your specific job.

I'm not complaining and I wasn't then.

Many Americans enjoy wonderful lifestyles...many don't.

true in any country

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

The work/life ratio is definitely different in the US as it is in Europe.
The old adage seems true:

Americans live to work, Europeans work to live.

I worked in the US and my first years were pretty tough. 11 hour work days, 9 hours on Saturdays, side job on Sunday. I wasn't complaining as I herded some money for the effort.

Canada is only slightly better, but that depends on who you work for.
Also, the starting time matters. In some EU countries the work day starts at 7am and ends at 3pm and change. The same number of hours (more or less) as in the US but more of the day is left after you get home.

No matter where you live, I get job in some government agency. Highly recommended ;)

I'm not even sure that I would call Polish ketchup... ketchup

So it would follow that Poles in fact do not serve pizza with ketchup.

"Americans are fat, stupid, materialistic, arrogant, lazy..." - But almost in the same sentence.. "Hey America, what's with the visa restrictions, why wouldn't you want more of us living with you??

Ha! You trickster.
Are these posts by the same people?
I, for one, never complained about US visa issues for Poles. Heck, I fell out of love with the US so I left. That is not to say I hate America. Lotsa good buddies of mine there. It's just the country is not for me. Much like, let's say, Antarctica . I'm sure it's a cool place, few fat people, most are very smart, but me and Antarctica ... nah.
