Work / Has anyone had experience of teaching with Berlitz Poland? [20]

18.7Zł net per lesson

Please write and tell them to stick it. Ten years ago I was paying Polish teachers 50PLN/hr. The rate they offered you is an insult. People stacking shelves are paid more.

I'm not sure it's enough to live on my own in my own apartment in Katowice.

It's not enough to share a garage with illegals.
Contact translation agencies instead.

Life / Why can't Polish people just keep their word? [12]

I haven't experienced this among friends. Perhaps you should choose your friends better. I have, however, many many times been let down by workmen, like builders, electricians, plumbers, etc. They say they'll do the job next week and then disappear for a month. I know there are flakey, unreliable tradesmen everywhere, but in Poland it seems that they just don't care about their reputation. Behind my house there are two pallets of paving bricks for a little terrace a builder promised to make. They've been there all winter. That's just one example. I could give dozens.

Life / Did you already bless your Święconka? [31]

Sounds right, Looker, except that the basket contains just a small amount of food, e.g. a few hard-boiled eggs, a sausage, a little bread, and everybody gets a little, symbolic piece of each at the table. btw, although I sadly miss my late father-in-law, I can't say I miss vodka with Easter breakfast.

Feedback / Is the Administrator of the P.F. a Native Pole ? [80]

Levi. Read what I said, not what it would be convenient for your prejudice for me to have said. Coming from a devout Catholic family, I would never accuse all Catholics of being bigots, even though I chose to go my separate way in terms of belief system.

Feedback / Is the Administrator of the P.F. a Native Pole ? [80]

I would say that Harry and Jon have provided more accurate and reliable information in answer to specific questions about Poland than any other member. I, myself, have offered advice to a lesser extent, living as I do in a more rural environment. The amount of aggression and paranoia expressed by a certain fundamentalist protestant Christian from the USA is as amusing as it is boring. This is a forum about Poland. Britons will inevitably have a strong presence here because there are quite a few living here. The Admin, it seems clear to anyone who doesn't wear a tinfoil hat, is a PolAm. I suggest disgruntled members start their own forum.

On the point of us Brits and our evil, secular opinions, certain posters would be surprised to visit the modern Poland they know so little about. Try Radio Maryja if you like your Catholicism red in tooth and claw, but young Polish people, i.e. the future, well, you won't find too many of them of them espousing the intolerance and bigotry of the likes of Father Rydzyk. Oh, and I'm not not sure about RM's views on apostasy. Better not.

Food / WHAT DID YOU EAT FOR POLISH EASTER TODAY? [45]

Lamb is, indeed, a favourite Easter dish in Britain, and not only at Easter. Lamb is slowly becoming more widely available in Poland as people realise that its not the same as the mutton they might have tasted or smelled years ago. For me, I started the day with fried smoked bacon, our own eggs, and black pudding. I'm thinking about defrosting some oxtail for dinner, but I might cook a piece of deer, kangaroo or boar, all of which I've been saving for a special occasion.

I think Alex Jones should be told about all this. He is a man who knows all about perfidious Albion, and knows how to debate with the likes of Piers Morgan and Andrew Neil. I see Jon, the evil brain behind this obvious NWO forum, has gone mysteriously quiet of late.

News / Poland: A Successful case of low criminality in Europe? [97]

There's no question that Poland has relatively lower crime than other European countries. I live in a village, and a few weeks ago we had some builders around to do a few days' work. Overnight they left ladders lying on the ground, as well as scaffolding. When we were building, about six years ago, we left 20,000PLN of roofing material on the ground for two weeks without anyone living there. I'm not saying more populated places don't have problems, but out here, "where the dogs bark out of their arses", we fear no evil.

Love / Any English guys give me advice please. Are Polish women very different to English women? [46]

She genuinely has the biggest heard on anyone I've ever met

I don't know if that's good or not, but it sounds like you've got a good one.

horrendously jealous and very materialistic

Can't women of all nationalities be the jealous type? Take it as a complement. Polish women tended to be less materialistic than those in some other European countries, but the mass media and advertising are changing that. I'm fortunate to have a very thrifty Polish missus. When I told my brother that she didn't like gold, he just stared at me and said, "You lucky bastard!"

Love / Polish from UK want to get married in Poland. Can the paperwork be arranged from here? marriage preparation? [24]

mal1989 It would be a good idea to contact the officiating priest in Poland and ask if he would be happy for you to have instruction in the UK. As you say, you don't have time to do it over here. A young couple I know had to attend meetings every week for about a month. The Uk priest could then write a statement confirmimg that he has given the instruction (this might have to be translated for the benefit of the Polish priest). I'd advise against contacting a Polish priest in the UK if you are already cohabiting. They can be a bit sniffy about this. As for the civil side, you're going to have to take a holiday here to get that sorted out. If you intend to marry this summer, you might find considerable difficulty in finding a place for the reception at this stage. People wait a year or even longer to book some places.

Law / The law in Poland on poisoning & invasion of privacy [8]

That was quite a creepy movie. I don't think she's broken any law by entering your unlocked room. I'd move out asap. Make sure you make an official statement to the cops (insist on talking to someone from the criminal branch and not just some doughnut-eating time server). Do you have a friend to stay with until you can move out?

Any positive lab test would be useless in court, as you could have adulterated it yourself. Still, it will be interesting to see what they find. Good luck and eat out.

Life / Can many young Poles speak German? [72]

I don't really see what America has to do with anything. There is a much closer English-speaking country to Poland. While it's true that most students encounter the worst English through American popular culture, at university level students of English have to read literature from both sides of the Atlantic.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

I guess you could be used as a native model, in other words as a teaching assistant. Whether a school would or could make things formal is another thing altogether. You'd have to do the running around contacting schools and teachers, and offering to work with them. There's another live thread about volunteering to teach. Check out what jon has to say.

Nobody seems to like French

Our uni offers joint degrees in English and French, English and Spanish, and English and Russian, as well as straight English Philology. There's even an option to take a degree in French and English with translation studies. No German.

Work / English teaching or English language preschool in Poland? [15]

Afaik she'll need to satisfy the local authorities that the requirements for operating a school have been met. She'll need toilets, adequate natural light, no hazardous materials, etc. It's all doable, it just takes time, effort and money. If I were your lady friend, I'd try to poach an experienced teacher or administrator from an established school. Or at least pay one as a consultant.

Work / English teaching or English language preschool in Poland? [15]

Renting premises is the least of the problems. An associate of mine went into this sector. She found what she thought was a suitable place, but then had to spend time and money adapting the space to conform with Min of Ed requirements, e.g. ventilation, light, which appear to be much higher than those for other establishments. Equipping classrooms is not a great expense.
