History / Life in Partitioned Poland (Specifically in the Prussian Partition) [118]

Another good suggestion, thanks for your continued input Paulina.

Unfortunatley, I've looked for this before. The only Zeromski in translation that I can find is The Faithful River, which would be good (will get round to reading it), but not as useful as The Spring to Come. Back to learning Polish I suppose...

There was a movie based on this book, so that might act as a substitute(:

History / Life in Partitioned Poland (Specifically in the Prussian Partition) [118]

Another book that i would recommend, is Poland by James A. Michener. He follows the life of Polish families throughout and not only the upper strata of society. Even though his knowledge of Poland was quite limited probably more limited than yourself, he produced a very credible piece of work-it fact it was a bestseller.

He did visit the country for a short period though.

News / 20 years of German unification. Poles no longer afraid of Germany. [8]

Who knows it might, it will be interesting to see what the exact number will actually be. There seems to be a bit of a discrepancy between what the government says and what the independent experts say. I am inclined to think that the number will be somewhere in the middle. An economy that will most likely grow in excess of 4% next year has to find its workforce from somewhere, not that the unemployment rate is especially low at some 11%.

It is interesting to note that there is a bit more pride and self assertion on Germany's side, which was probably lacking some 5-10 years ago. I think that is probably a positive, there is no point in them hiding in their shell i prefer their politics to the French on the European stage.

History / What happened from 1650-1795? [68]

The reasons for this development though were partly the internal weaknesses of Poland-Lithuania, and the bad fortune of Prussia, Russia and Austria agreeing with each other. There were plenty of occasions when all three of these powers were very hesitant to act, Prussia was primarily concerned of the increasing influence of Russia on Poland, ever since Peter the Great Poland became increasingly dependent on the Russians. All of this started when the Saxon Wettin dynasty became dependent on the Russians for their claim to the Polish throne.

I am not sure about the egotistic and vulgar bit when it comes to the Germans, you have to remember that they were only later to develop, after the Poles, a sense of national identity. In the meantime they probably bickered more amongst each other than they did with foreigners, in what can be described as, to borrow their own words Deutsche Wirtschaft.

Love / How easy is it to pick up a girl from a club/bar in Warsaw ? [65]

Or maybe is it easier to pick up in a coffee shop or even from the street ?
No offense here...please be serious...

It depends on what sort of person you are: Handsome? Intelligent? Rich?

If none of the above it might be a struggle.

southern
Not really they are usually not realy attracted to thickset gorillas, unless they have money. Balkan men usually do not

Yes in a sense they did, if the Republic had a more central state, which was based on one nation and not two-since you have to remember, that the Commonwealth was also know as The Republic of Two Nations. And if the king even though elected could exercise more power, then it might not necessarily have been a problem. But given the relative weakness of the king's position and his dependence on the nobility, as well as the wayward inclination of some of the Lithuanian nobles-he was bound to be ineffective because that is how the system was designed. According to Zamoyski en.wikipedia.org/wiki who was one of the author's of the Henrican Articles, "The King reigns but does not govern."Rex regnat et non gubernat.

History / What happened from 1650-1795? [68]

The political structure was open to manipulation from the outside, given that a king was elected, this actively encouraged foreign powers to meddle in the affairs of the republic every election. This was OK so long as Poland's neighbors were weak and divided, once they became stronger and more cohesive trouble was the inevitable outcome. Furthermore central power was relatively weak within the state, the king basically had to go cap in hand to the nobility if he wanted something really noteworthy to be done. By contrast With the German, Russian and French nobility, if they objected the king would just give them a backhander and they would obey.

The nobility was more than happy to choose a foreign king, because the less he knew the better. What is more they did not like to see one of their own elevated above the rest. These are also partly the reasons why the English preferred foreigners as kings as well.

Indeed, He seems like the type of guy i would really trust in a crisis situation-don't worry chaps we'll muddle through.

If he wasn't so pro Europe, he would have most definitely been Tory leader and then expose phony Tony for what he really was.

Gee, someone got a great deal.

Indeed, he hates being reminded of it though.

when he first started in parliament he wrote a little red book, which called for greater nationalisation. The guy is just off the scale when it comes to incompetence. He also wrote a book on courage can you believe it, but was to cowardly to call an election when the Conservatives started moving up in the polls when he fist assumed power. It was kind of funny because he first tried to deny it and lied, claiming no preparations had taken place, which was really dumb as his people briefed the press about it beforehand and they lost about a million or so from all the cancellations.

you tend not to see types with the sub intelligence of Brown get so far up very often.

News / Poles DO return to the UK [39]

Yes he was.
How could anyone ever vote Labour again after all they have done to the UK?

It is incredible, but they have a strong self interested block that does just that, they get a solid vote form the welfare and public sectors.

You see there was a time when Labour party politicians actually were from and represented the working class, which has been changed to Labour politicians that came straight out of uni and into parliament -with 0 experience of real life, as typified by the Milibands.

At least most of the Conservatives have some real life experience, they actually created wealth not consumed it before coming into parliament.

I like charming leftists like the Milibands, provided that they keep their nose out of things they don't understand. Such as making a living.

When Leftists like Brown, stick their nose into things they don't understand, to borrow a few sentences, they become 'piddlers upon merit, beggars at the door of accomplishment, thieves of livelihood, envy-coddling tax lice applauding themselves for giving other People's money. They are the lap dogs of the poly sci class, returning to the vomit of collectivism. They are pig herders tending to the sow-who-eats her young, the welfare state. They are muck-dwelling bottom-feeders growing fat on the worries and disappointments of the electorate. They are the ditch carp of democracy.

I think these few choice sentences sum up Labour really well, the irony is that they also cuddled up to the very rich high end of town money speculators, and denuded the Bank of England from its Watch Dog status.

To borrow Mandelson’s phrase, one of the architects of New Labour: “Labour is very comfortable with people becoming filthy rich."

Out of interest, if your ConDems do indeed fire the person who writes instruction manuals
, who will do it? Or should Nurses etc just make it all up as they go along?

People will just have to use common sense, painful I know.

jonni

Your peculiar tone combined with your user name and previous odd statements highlight your bias and prejudice. At least we've only got four more years of the ConDeems, assuming they last a full term.

Play the ball and not the Man! So I will repeat he said he had abolished boom and bust, sold Britain's gold at its lowest price, and he helped destroy Britain's pensions system, and he was grossly fiscally irresponsible. Apparently one of his best mates and the new liebour leader said just as much in his speech-so stop flying the red banner and open your mind and get on with the program.

I REPEAT THE MAN WAS A FOURTH RATE CRETIN! And even those in his own party think that is the case.

Even Blair says the conservatives are right to cut the deficit!

I would go further and say that Brown was not only one of Britain's most incompetent chancellors but also one of Europe's most incompetent.

And there aren't many of those. Hardly any, in the cash-strapped public sector. In any case, the previous Tory administration increased the ratio of manager to front line staff, and nothing about the ConDems suggests they'll be able to do otherwise.

Alas I am afraid there are, there is more bureaucrats in the NHS than there is doctors and nurses. All those NHS managers will not be there for long and Andrew Lansley will see to that.

It will take the Conservatives awhile to change this:

world's greatest economists

One of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard-The man who abolished boob and bust, he was fourth rate cretin.

Fair enough, I was't saying that they should have, I know many do not. I know that most probably don't as well, some of these things are concerned with risk though and how prepared you are to give it a go. BTW "a typical public-sector worker, for example someone who cares for the profoundly disabled"- will not lose their job, its the guy who tells the guy and writes instruction manuals for the person doing the caring that will though.

Well the cuts have not really even begun to be seriously implemented, 2011 will be quite a crucial year. So if you work in the public service, don't necessarily have much business aptitude and are not particularity interested or capable of doing anything other then an office job, you will feel the pinch.

But fingers crossed, if the the British economy grows slightly above expectations, which is not very probable, things might be a little easier.

Now that the German market is going to open to the Poles next year, it will be fascinating to see how many take the plunge in search for the Euro. My guess is about a 100 thousand, most of them seasonal, I think the lure of the Euro will be irresistible to many, things will change when Poland acquires the Euro itself, which might be somewhere between 2013-2015 .

News / €11,700 to every migrant returning to the Polish capital and starting a business there. [110]

pgtx

lol... of course not... the Polish goverment should better take care of an affordable housing for your people, lower unemployment and better paid jobs... that's some start...

It is not the business of government to create jobs, that is the responsibility of business.

quote=convex]Yea, because what Poland really needs right now are a million economists, philologists, psychologists, and sociologists. They can come back and help drive wages for unskilled labor down even further.[/quote]

This only applies to people who can start a business, so it does not matter what profession, skills or qualifications they have. If they can run a business employ other and generate money that is all that counts.
