Law / What's the best way to transfer £20,000 into PLN [31]

was wondering if anyone could give me advice on the best way to transfer £20,000 into PLN.

i don't know if i would transfer it or all of it. it depends what it is to be spent on.

in simple terms: if i want a new computer i'll buy it in euro in germany.

News / HIV infected Nigerian has bitten bus ticket's controler in Cracow! [56]

So is it the same on trains in Poland or are the Bus controllers a different breed to the train people?

two different breeds. the train folk have always been polite (apart from the one i nearly gave a good hiding) tram controllers are as stated above.

News / HIV infected Nigerian has bitten bus ticket's controler in Cracow! [56]

It seems all of them Africans are HIV holders.Poland has to close the borders for them immidiatelly!

i don't know how many black africans in Poland have AIDS, but i do know that 15,000 Poles are known to have it.

if i were young and single i'd be more worried about playing the field with locals.

News / HIV infected Nigerian has bitten bus ticket's controler in Cracow! [56]

Given that those of us living in Poland routinely see the trouble that these 'controllers' cause on a daily basis, many of them being nothing but lowlife morons

things changed in wroclaw and now the 'controllers' are quite professional and polite.

most people, when they are caught man up and simlpy hand over their id, with no fuss.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

As someone or other has said, English is merely mispronounced French, going back to the last successful invasion of GB in 1066

not quite. where i come from there are a lot of viking, anglo saxon words. isthatu2 might say the same for his part of england.

i can't wait for Poles to start using words like netty and divvent. lots of vocabulary with double letters.

Life / Poles love of knights and battle. [10]

bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-14378984

"There is something about summer that makes some Poles clamour to slip into chain mail or flowing dresses and pretend to be medieval knights and damsels.

During the holiday season there is a knights' tournament or battle re-enactment every weekend.

"People love it. They want to be some somewhere far, far away from the normal, just a little bit boring, everyday life," says popular historian Boguslaw Woloszanski".

USA, Canada / Why are Polish restaurants not successful in the USA? [698]

Wrocław, what is Polish food to you? Just curious.

anything that comes from biedronka, which is across the street.

in this house we have a sort of mixed european style, and it was like that before i arrived here.

Polish food is simple and bland. pierogi are an emergency/convenience meal, carp is for christmas and bigos is for any and all festive occassions. soup for me is a starter, not a main meal, so i hardly ever bother with it.

so long as Poles keep going on about pierogi then any restaurant is doomed to failure.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Remember, tea and supper are still widely used.

which brings us back to the title of the thread.

english words, but not always the same meaning in Polish.

if brits can't decide when they are eating dinner, how can anyone else hope to get it right.

and dinner for sth prepared at home but, then again,

dinner = main meal of the day.

so it now depends on ones work pattern and availability of time.

school lunches are just that for some. for others it's dinner.

all confusing these days.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

Here in America the meals are termed using the Southern English mode as well.

do you have tea ? a sort of afternoon/evening lunch.

tea: most Poles think it's a drink when in fact it can be a meal.

Language / Too many English words in the Polish language! [709]

The term "lunch" was not introduced into English until the 19th century. The afternoon meal was formerly called "dinner" in english and the evening meal was called "supper" in English. Now the evening meal is called "dinner" in English and "supper" is archaic. The Poles have a word for "lunch" and it is "obiad".

all wrong.

lunch/dinner in the uk is more to do with work and the type of work between north and south.

bankers in the south had lunch while shiftworkers in the north had dinner.

and in the uk they still have supper.

the modern mix of people has now confused everything.

Love / Affairs don't pay - Poles say [11]

if they found hobbies which maintained their interest

time consuming hobbies or those that keep one out of the house are a dangerous thing in a relationship. unless they are shared hobbies.

on the other hand. spending too much time with your partner can also lead to problems.

it's a difficult balance to master.

Genealogy / Getting records from Poland (are records of Poles moved from churches to the archives)? [21]

What's LDS?

LDS and the link patrycja19 provided are the same thing.

it is always difficult to get copies of records in Poland. one needs precise information and in some cases a professional genealogist to do the work for you.

make use of ancestry.com and similar sites. someone might have already done the work for you.

note to all: no-one seems to mention it, but buying a decent book on genealogy/family history is a must.

then u can keep up to date and fill in gaps of knowledge by using the internet.

Work / Teaching jobs for Americans in Wroclaw? [54]

Oh and what were your credentials when coming to Wroclaw? Do you have to be a university graduate or have finished the CELTA course?

not in my case.

if u want to get on here don't spend longer than your first weekend trying to get to know the place. get out and meet people, look for work and when you've found it u can relax. think about other work options too.

u will run into problems and often the only way out is to grow some.
