News / US slaps Poland in the face (Comey Poland) [92]

Roz, it's a pity Jack Rosenthal isn't around to make a tv play out of it.
It seems that almost everyone has learned something from this diplomatic cluster...error. Poland's response was just right.

Food / WHAT DID YOU EAT FOR POLISH EASTER TODAY? [45]

Easter kangaroo (ruse to stay on-topic) is dense-fibred meat with a beefy taste. I've only tried it once, and it wasn't as gamey as I expected. Perhaps it was farmed and pampered. Nice, though. Very lean. Something like venison. Kaufland stocks it from time to time.

Life / Safety to live in Bialystok, Poland? [28]

There is one Nigerian in Białystok. He's been there since January and hasn't had any problems yet. Send me a private message with an e-mail address and I'll pass it on to him.

Life / Car insurance in Poland: where's the best place to get it? [19]

AC (with replacement using original parts, with theft coverage, 500zl excess and 15% own contribution to repair cost) = 341.15zl

I'll have to check that out next year. Presumably, I'll lose a bit of NCB if I change insurers, but it still sounds a great deal.

Life / Things getting cheaper in Poland? [6]

But is it cheaper than say a year, two years ago?

I'd say a little cheaper, but that's just a feeling. Someone who buys the same basket of groceries every week would have a better idea. There are more temptations in terms of what used to be seen as luxury items, but as Jon says (and perhaps because of greater choice), there is more discounted stuff on offer. I am happy to report that the prices of essentials like wine and beer are steady. Prices at the pump have also stabilised, and LPG is really cheap now (under 2 PLN the last time I noticed). Perhaps I'm wrong, but the cost of good shoes and clothes seems to have risen.

Travel / Traveling out from Krakow to Slovakia for the May long weekend [7]

Isn't gamey lamb more normally referred to as mutton?

When the wife and I were down there last May I had the local lamb a couple of times. It really was lamb, not mutton, which was also on the menu. The lamb wasn't as sweet as New Zealand or British lamb, but had a richer flavour. I prefer English lamb, though.

Life / Car insurance in Poland: where's the best place to get it? [19]

Sounds like a pretty unbeatable deal to me. I pay exactly 300 PLN for OC with Vienna Group, but that's the basic, no-frills policy, and I have 60% no claims bonus. Are there any insurers who give credit for having no points? I don't suppose there are. How would they know? It would also be interesting to know the highest rates for car insurance in Poland (just to feel smug).

History / How come Poles like Russians but not Germans? [216]

Nicely put, Jolly. My dad was in the British Army from 1940 until he was demobbed in 1946. Although he was a great guy, he never really 'forgave' Germans for robbing him (as he saw it) of his youth. Coming from a post-war generation, I have no such prejudice against modern Germany. In many ways it is a beacon of tolerance and peace. Some people on this forum love to perpetuate old hatreds. It's what makes them get up in the morning.

Food / POLISH RECIPES! [287]

such cake (apples with cinnamon) is declined in all western cultures.

It's never declined when I'm around. Best served warm with vanilla ice cream and good coffee. We mustn't forget the other Szarlotka: Żubrówka vodka and apple juice.

Travel / My Krakow Trip - Including Blackmarket, 2nd handstores, Drugs? [19]

It's not a good idea to bring dope into Poland. If you are caught, you will find yourself in a world of pain, and your

embassy will not be sympathetic; quite the reverse. Don't get me wrong, I have no gripe with cannabis. I used it a lot in my youth, when I didn't need short-term memory as much as I do now, but Poland is a dangerous place for you if you don't know what you are doing. Take care, drink beer.

Jon. 10 for a beer? I'm glad I don't get out more.

Travel / My Krakow Trip - Including Blackmarket, 2nd handstores, Drugs? [19]

LTMJ, so, you're coming to Poland and want some advice on the black market in weapons and drugs. Well, there are such markets, usually inhabited by very nasty violent criminals who would eat a naive tourist alive and spit out the bones. There are also police and courts who would not find it amusing that a foreigner got straight off a plane and went looking for illegal merchandise. My advice is to come to Poland, enjoy the country, and forget about the other stuff. It won't kill you to do without for a week.

Study / Warsaw School of Economics vs Jagiellonian University [10]

I for one find it very strange, that someone would choose to study at a University just because the town where the University is, ....looks 'more beautiful'.

Why spend three or more years in a dump when you can be in a great place? I know I'd rather spend a summer's evening kissing in a punt (careful how you say that) along the Isis than slumming it in the Earl de Grey on Hull's waterfront (done both).

Life / Concerns of a Swede who is about to go to Poland for work [53]

If they do not have family's support, they just die (or move West). How many Polish retirees have to beg or sell garlic in towns' main streets?

Nobody dies of starvation on Polish streets. I live near a small (30,000 pop.) town in eastern Poland and I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a beggar here. The family is indeed a very important safety net in Poland, but you grossly overstate the problems you highlight. I sometimes have lunch in a place where poor people use MOPS vouchers to get a very good meal every day. The big cities in Poland have the usual big city problems, but a country's big cities are never a reflection of the wider country. This is not India.

Law / Paying tax on UK I.S.A. in Poland? [20]

I won 25 pounds on the premium bonds a few years back, which is tax free in the UK. However, I recently received a letter from the Polish tax authorities asking for their share

The time, effort and postage involved to collect that share will cost more than it's worth. I suppose I'd better keep quiet about that Euro-millions win. (Just joking, Mr Tax man)

UK, Ireland / Romanian manual labour workers in the UK making Poles look bad. [12]

seams to me that, this way or another, Poles in UK somehow often looks bad.

Poles in the UK have an extremely good reputation. Despite the small, noisy groups of xenophobes that stir up ill-will, the vast majority of British people have very positive attitudes towards Poles. The gutter press, e.g. the Daily Mail, often use clearly and understandably unpopluar EU legislation to try to drive a wedge between British people and immigrants, but it hasn't worked to any great extent ( a case in point is the payment of child support for Polish children who have never lived in the UK). Poles are seen as law-abiding and hardworking. An often heard utterence is "I'd rather have a hardworking Polish family living next door to me than a useless British welfare family all claiming benefits". A point in praise of Britain: where else in the world would a million incomers be as welcomed as Poles have been in Britain? It is deeply ironic that the American Brit haters on this forum forget that there are no, and never have been, Polack jokes in the UK.

Life / Why can't Polish people just keep their word? [12]

A kilo of goat's cheese a week? That's a serious cheese habit you've got, K. I thought I had it bad.

give the job to someone else

The trouble is that round our way they're all the bloody same, so we'd be let down by the next gang. Instead we just grit our teeth and let them get on with it when they eventually arrive. Once we got a quote for some external plastering. When they finally completed the job they wanted more. I reminded them of their quote. "Oh, that was months ago!" Christ on a bike!

Law / Recording someone in private - is it legal in Poland? [14]

better to be rightly charged with invasion of privacy than wrongly charged with rape

Agreed. I bet there have been lots of guys who would have given anything for such a tape at their trial.

camera in bedroom

Now that would not go down too well in court. Gross infringement.

security camera in the hallway of your home

Sounds good.

Life / WHY DO POLES USE ENGLISH WORDS IN CONVERSATION? [396]

snogging = kissing

Snogging is a particular, enthusiastic kind of kissing. Two hormonal teenagers might snog behind the bus shelter, for example. You wouldn't snog your mother-in-law. At any rate I wouldn't snog my mother-in-law.
