I'd say Poland is world leader in soups.

That's definitely true so many tasty varieties. Here's a nice list of top 17 soups with photos. tastingpoland.com/food/polish_food_soups.html

News / Jerusalem Post: Poland's good intentions [30]

today's worth not that from 60 years back.

The thing is not every Jew owned property. After Poland regained her independence after WWI the Jews in the east (from Lithuania for instance) were dirt poor.

$6.3 billion

I'm guessing this is the more reasonable figure the Jews may get in the future, not 60 billion. I don't know where they got that previous figure even if it's recounted in today's money, i doubt real estate was expensive in pre war Poland.

News / Jerusalem Post: Poland's good intentions [30]

Poland would offer restitution to all victims of the Nazis, Jews included, if only...

Ironically, the ancient Hebrew maxim, 'he who encompasses too much encompasses nothing at all,' applies to contemporary Poland.

Poland's post-communist regime is a case in point.

Its parliament is willing to grant restitution not only to Jewish survivors of the Nazi Holocaust, but also to people of all nationalities whose property was confiscated by the Nazi and communist regimes. The Polish legislators blame their purported inability to fulfill their good intentions on the domestic financial consequences. They contend that the cost would add $6.3 billion to the national debt. Prime Minister Donald Tusk believes the projected restitution will be feasible only when (and if) the country's economic situation improves.

This contradicts an unusually upbeat ad published in the International Herald Tribune at the behest of Poland's Ministry of Treasury, the text of which states (in part): "Poland is currently one of the fastest developing economies in Europe. It has ranked for several years among the EU leders in terms of GDP growth. Leading international financial institutions estimate that Poland's economy will grow by between four and 4.2 per cent in 2011."

History / German Traitor And Polish Pig [96]

the Gestapo lead Bronka and Gerhard, shave their heads, leaving only the pig tails, make them burn their hair. She is wearing a sack and a plate with inscription: "I'm Polish pig", his says: "I am a traitor to the German nation".

I could sort of understand if it was stupid teenagers pulling something like that, but for adults to do that to them, messed up in the head.

Love / Do African or Afro- American women find Polish men attractive? [179]

I know gille, that's what i said about being in back in Poland I couldn't believe how many pretty, thin girls you can find just walking around on the streets.

America on the other hand is like the UK.

You're right to a degree. In better neighborhoods, and especially in the suburbs girls have the money to take tare of themselves, dye hair, tan, dress nice, go to the gym, watch what they eat. Those fat unattractive girl usually are married women who no longer feel a need to be sexy, or some trashbag from the intercity.

Which is what I find tremendously funny....

I wouldn't deny it. I've seen so many pretty Latinas in Florida and in Puerto Rico so i know you have gorgeous girls. But girls like this are pretty

Love / In Polish relationships who is the boss? [46]

I dunno about that one. It seam like they prefer a man giving into their demands. I've heard one mother say to her daughter "Nie wiem jak to kobieta nie może dać se rady w chłopem" just because he didn't wanna do as she says.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

You should do your best to train up your locals to do what is needed in your economy and forget about taking in Africans just because they happen to be cheaper.

It's like here in the States Detroit used to be motor city, a assembly line worker who basically did a job a monkey could be trained to do, got paid 60 dollars an hour. 20,25 dollars an hour with benefits is enough for someone who stand and screws in car doors and seats, or some bumper. So the American and German car makers moved their factories to Mexico. Jobs lost here, plus poorer quality cars, cheaper parts.

News / For all Americans worried about Schengen in Poland, dont worry about it. [142]

I don't mean to insult Poland (really not) but here you probably underestimated Texas, it's most likely even more than just 10 times richer.

New York area is filthy rich, to own a house in the NEw York suburbs you must have alot of money. Same house that cost let's say 300,000 here in metro Philadelphia, or 200,000 in the south, costs 600-700 thousand or more up there. And still there are so many people able to afford that and much much more.

History / "Quiet Hero" a book on Polish Survivors rarely heard - by Rita Cosby [26]

Too bad she shames her father by serving a reactionary news network that represents the antithesis of the progressivism that the Polish nation stands for.

Well she points out that her father was a Pole and not a Jew like all American media is focused on or believes Poland is where they all come from.

History / "Quiet Hero" a book on Polish Survivors rarely heard - by Rita Cosby [26]

[Moved from]: Rita Cosby QUIET HERO: SECRETS FROM MY FATHER'S PAST

Rita Cosby's Book Quiet Hero: Secrets From My Father's Past picked as bestseller by the New York Times . She uncovered a story of heroism and courage in her own family, detailing her father's youth as a Polish Resistance fighter who battled the Nazis in World War II. Senator John McCain called it, "a loving, poignant tribute to her P.O.W. father and freedom." Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said it's "a beautiful tribute to the strength of the human spirit." Lech Walesa, former President of Poland, said of Cosby's father, "One of Poland's great treasures has now been found."

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

I'll never be truly rich as a teacher but I know how to save and set aside for a rainy day (for the black hour as they say in Polish).

That how I am, I think 3x before I buy something. It's the dumbest thing to be a slave to some bank or car dealership, wait a year or two you'll pay cash and own it.

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

Poles have to reject the decadence of Western life and play to their strengths. Poles are rugged people and can survive on much less than most Westerners could even imagine.

Nicely said. Problem lays with Poland not being able to provide the worry free got enough money life they want. They hear on the news that Poland is developing, that we're almost there and don't want those old days of hardship to come back. Western is not always best, I couldn't imagine myself paying off a house not being sure I'll have a job in the years to come, or living on credit cards or leasing some car that with never be mine.

Life / Struggling young Polish couple - try to solve their problem [176]

I know several people who have good work despite their parents not being well connected. But they put in the work - one girl is studying for the English accountancy exams in her spare time, for instance. She's now sitting on a 5500zl brutto salary as a junior specialist for one of the Big 4 firms - but her workload is horrific.

My aunt told me that Huta Stalowa Wola where my father worked, which was bought by the Chinese is desperate for people who speak both fluent Polish and English. Supposedly many other companies as well, English is important nowadays to get a good job, even in ones own country. 440 million Chinese know English, on what level i can't tell you.

i don't know that much. i remember him mentioning something about opening their own business, i think it was a travel agency (?), but nothing so far.

My cousins in Poland same story, one (masters in engineering degree) found a good paying job the kind he went to school for. Second one left Poland with his wife and lives and works in Paris,France. The third (supposedly) can't find anything and lives with his parents. Unless one has a daddy with his own business or family member or good friend in a large company it's hard to find decent work.

News / For all Americans worried about Schengen in Poland, dont worry about it. [142]

mongrel Americans; (part German, Irish, Polish, Italian, Greek, etc)

That's not nice to say, people of mixed European ancestry come out nice looking.

A few times. Amusingly, several students were kicked out of Poland after not bothering with a residence permit - all of them American medical students who believed that they could buy their way out of trouble.

With that i agree, the law is the law and a country's rules should be respected.

Also, if Wroclaw has a population of around 600,000 and according to our friend above has 50 Americans it is perfectly feasible for Lublin to have 20. ;0)

Yea but Wroclaw appears to be a much more attractive town for foreign visitors and residents then Lublin.

but the national avg. is propped up by bloated salaries. take away the millionaires and you get a much more, and realistic, number.

I know Fuzzy that's what i said :)

national average should be counted within the classes, not with millionaires.

3600 national average is gross - so it's like 2400 net - and still I don't know where do they take these 3600 from if most people in salary get around 2000 PLN gross (and millions get less than that)

Ok fine let them mean gross, so 2400 is still far more than their 1500zl a month. national average should be counted within the classes, not with millionaires.

join the military, get free housing?

might as well join the f'in peace corps LOL.

Polish army doesn't work like the American army

I had a buddy (Pole) here in the US Navy pay was ok,food was free and pretty good, and one had the option of living on base for free or renting an apartment off base and the military paid for it.
