News / Polish police chief removes crosses [250]

Again, you're pretending there are invisible enemies working to drive society further and further from your personal ideal, if it ever existed in reality. The world is changing - accept that and you will be less unhappy.

You're forgetting (or ignoring) that people have to follow the law in so many areas. A teacher, social worker etc can object to this, that or the other, but they still have to do their job according to the rules. They can have all sorts of objections on all sorts of grounds to all sorts of laws, but their role remains the same. Do the job according to the law or do something else.

Law / What banks are people using in Poland? [50]

Very true. I've opened several personal and business accounts over the years without using any of those things. Just choose the right bank.

92.2% of Poles officially and freely declared themselves Roman Catholic

Mass attendance figures show that your figure is at best unreliable. People tick a box but don't do anything about it the rest of the time. In any case, even if 100% were practising Catholics, the Polish state is still, according to the constitution that people recently voted on, a secular state.

Attempts to change that have led to political parties being voted out of office; those who voted them out are part of your 92.2%.

Nothing wrong with banners, however only in your fevered imagination do groups of people want to hang 'banners all over the place' nowadays and as for the bizarre word 'homocracy', you need to take a reality check.

The establishment of a Polish state is often identified with the adoption of Christianity by its ruler Mieszko I in 966

If that were even half relevant we'd be insisting that much more from Mieszko's time were still practiced. We don't bother with the form of government that he had, because we now have something better. Just as we don't have a theocracy with crosses all over public buildings because our culture has evolved past that too.

Life / Polish natural remedies and homeopathey better than English [84]

The whole point of a traded company is to make profit. The only other alternatives for discovering, synthesising, running clinical trials etc for producing pharmaceuticals or medical equipment are the state doing it, which they don't, and the voluntary sector, who don't either.

Btw, this isn't 'a debate', and getting sued or not depends I suppose on what someone says in public and whether or not the mods delete it in a timely manner.

UK, Ireland / Daniel Pelka murder: Polish mother and stepfather face life sentences [96]

If there are transnational custody issues that indeed makes it complicated.

The courts can also waive responsibility for a child, as they did with that one from America who was sold online by its parents to a rich elderly couple in Wales. They sent the kid back to the care of the authorities in the US, however a court ruling was needed.

Life / Polish vs British vs American - Clash of cultures [390]

while Brits are able to openly celebrate sb`s death. I was really disgusted to see so many Brits enjoying the death of Margaret Thatcher

The PiS supporters were picketing Geremek's funeral with placards that had offensive slogans on.That would be impossible in the UK.

If the state have to do it as an emergency measure, the committee that is automatically convened have to look into the child's best interests immediately and also have to work with the Crown Prosecution Service. This doesn't always happen though - a radical intervention isn't done lightly (or easily) by social workers, and when a child is in a terrible situation it relies too much on chance that the different agencies/professionals talk to each other. The children's database would have helped - the whole point of it was to flag up visits to the doctor, the hospital, concerns from the school etc and make them visible to all the professionals involved.

The child is Polish, I suspect he held a Polish passport and I suspect and the parents had no affiliation with UK other than being here.

It's very regulated by law. The social services have precisely defined duties and limitations. The year on year budget cuts make it even harder for them, and the government's planned database of all children was scrapped due to the costs of setting it up. That would have stopped some children falling through the net.

The nationality of the parents is irrelevant - the law requires makes the state responsible for the welfare of all children physically present in the UK, regardless of citizenship issues.

The Mac super-size world has a lot to answer for...

Did you know that something called the 'Mac Double' that they have in the US is the cheapest source of quick calories. The problem in PL is similar - the poor have a diet loaded in carbohydrates and low in some more important things.

Diet alone isn't everything though.

How can business be honest when every body's out for their own personal gain?

Very easily. To fund the medical research, clinical trials, licensing, manufacturer etc costs a huge amount of money and the fore requires people to invest. Nothing dishonest, and nothing wrong with getting a good return on your investment.

UK, Ireland / Daniel Pelka murder: Polish mother and stepfather face life sentences [96]

When the Polish kid in Norway was removed from her parents and kidnapped by that Rutkowski guy, I remember reading furious posts here from people who believe the state should never intervene and that the parents also know best.

We need the Norwegian approach - far greater funding for social services, stronger child protection and no messing around.

I wonder what happened to the kid who was kidnapped from Norway and given back to its deeply dodgy parents.

Hard to say. They may have met after they left. Also there's often the idea that the parents know best. We can see here that it isn't always true.

And the UK taxpayer will doubtless have to foot the bill for keeping them in jail, since they are unlikely to want to serve out their life sentences in a Polish jail.

UK, Ireland / Daniel Pelka murder: Polish mother and stepfather face life sentences [96]

A very sad story.

The mother and stepfather of a four-year-old boy who was battered to death after being subjected to a six-month regime of starvation and physical torture will be jailed for life on Friday after being found guilty of murdering the boy, whose body was so emaciated that one experienced health worker compared it to that of a concentration camp victim.
Jurors took under four hours to unanimously convict Daniel Pelka's mother, Magdelena Luczak, and stepfather, Mariusz Krezolek, following a nine-week trial at Birmingham crown court. A review has been launched to establish why chances to save Daniel were missed before the pair starved and killed him.

linked bar mleczny "Miś

I've been to that one, though not recently. It used to be ok. There was another just round the corner but t might be closed now, an excellent one just off the rynek and a modernised one between the rynek and stary browaria. All of them good and cheap.

Real Estate / I want to sell land in Poland (Bialka Tatrzanska) - any advice? [39]

For the whole seven plots including the house, it isn't bad, despite being in the back of beyond. I suspect she's trying to offload them at that price each. The ad being in English and the price being in sterling should be a big warning sign. If it was worth buying, the locals would have snapped it up long ago despite water and electric not being connected yet. I doubt there's a phone line or mains drainage either.

Avoid.

Life / Polish natural remedies and homeopathey better than English [84]

Saving lives by investing in scientific research and clinical trials then producing and marketing medicines is not evil.

It isn't asset stripping, it isn't high interest loans to the feckless, it isn't encouraging people to spend. It's honest business.

Travel / Taxi Fare - WAW to Międzylesie [18]

is almost a straight road from the airport, at 2pm he will miss rush hour. There has been a lot of new roads built around Anin/Wesola & Wawer, so the travel time is reduced.

The issue isn't how straight the road is. The issue is the sign saying 'Druga Strefa'. Once the taxi passes that they go to a much higher tariff.

Fair enough. It always pays to know the local scene.

It does indeed. Worth mentioning that the wrong sort of driver will try it on with anyone - even if the passenger has lived in town all their life.

BTW mods, it might be nice to remove the persons address, two posts ago.

MPT, ELE and Super Taxi all have Airport licenses. All are generally OK. Avoid any others soliciting for business there.
