Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

It's always important to have fall-back funds for unforeseen contingencies. They pop up when you least expect them.

One of the greatest skills of a teacher is to be adaptable and turn your hand quickly to something. A teacher often has little time between lessons to change gear and somehow is expected to make the shift smoothly. Sometimes you'll get the feeling that classes just mould into each other.

Work / Advice on Teaching English in Poland [709]

It depends where you are based. The demand isn't always constant but you need to keep your ear to the ground. The financial crisis changed a couple of things. Businesses reduced their overheads and English was one of the first things to go.

It's important to build up a reputation. One teacher here has a reputation for being a drunk which is unfortunate as he is a super teacher.

Work / Are you teaching English in Poland? [120]

I heard through the grapevine that a meeting was convened to drive down the wages for teachers but, thankfully, the participants didn't go in for it. Other salaries go up so so does ZUS. I'll be damned if I get a pay cut, I accepted a low enough rate as it is.

Groups cancelling on you is another ballache.

Food / Borscht - Zurek / Bialy barszcz recipe [153]

Żurek z jajkiem is a Silesian speciality. It can be quite oily, depending on who makes it. It would translate as sour rye soup with eggs.

I've never tried the stuff from the yoghurt-style cartons but I don't know if I really want to.

Language / Polish or any Slavic language key to any other Slavic languages? [126]

I have come to the conclusion that mimicking and detecting speech patterns really help. This doesn't apply solely to Slavic languages but I'm gonna stay on tack. I had the chance to listen to Serbo-Croatian over the last couple of weeks. I heard the Slavic element clearly but the punch and intonation were so different. You can detect more of an Italian twang there. The key is listening and recognising. However, there were similarities that were instantly recognisable.

Life / Why is cheating at schools in Poland accepted?! [155]

What an intelligent way of making the Polish education system appear high ;) ;) Get the smartest kiddo and everyone copies from them :)

And the latest GUS statistics reveal:

Paweł Nowak 93%
Ewa Wajda 93%
Monika Kus 93%
Bartek Kowal 93%
Kasia Burak 93%
Piotr Grelik 93%
Magda Baron 93%
Jacek Bąk 93%

Etc etc ;) ;)

And a big cry of 'dziękujemy, dziękujemy', LOL

Pawian does have a point, though. Jewish merchants and all manner of others cheated Poles in the past. However, 2 wrongs don't make a right.

It's the same in the UK, pawian. You are swamped in schools, simultaneously studying many subjects. It's a nonsense really, I have learned to see through that BS.

There is cheating as I was witness to it. Still, the tests were flimsy and worthless so I let them do it.

If pawian meant that there was substantive overlap, then yes. There is bound to be some common ground on syllabi.

Life / Should Poles be Polish? [44]

Some Poles do Poland a good service abroad but, unfortunately, many are perceived as boorish and primitive. It's a pity as I know some really smart people here.

Love / Nice Polish women photos [329]

This IQ test is virtually worthless. I've seen some bozos very high up when they shouldn't be. Can we stick to the photos and less of the BS IQ stuff?

Food / Your favourite Polish foods! [180]

Stuffed cabbage rolls (gołąbki) from jars is actually pretty good. They hit the spot and are lighter than some other Poolish foods. Good for spring :)
