UK, Ireland / Mercy flight for dying Polish woman living in the UK [21]

That maternal bond is sooooo important. I just wish the Israelis acknowledged the same before they obliterated 750 women and children.

How we should have hung our heads in shame as an international community. That was a massacre!

So, well done here for giving hope to the young boy, that people care. As Tim Robbins convinced Morgan Freeman, 'hope is a good thing'.

Socialised medicine???? What are you on about? You read a leaflet from its inception in 1948 when Aneurin Bevan famously said, 'from cradle to the grave'. Thatcher introduced General Management and Compulsory Competitive Tendering which made a mockery of Bevan's vision.

It has its good parts and bad parts now but please ask the British members for specifics. I haven't lived under it for 8 years now. It may have undergone some significant reform in that time.

Yes, it is true if you know the British NHS. Don't start with your nonsense, lassie. Just like the 1300 people that died as a result of OCL were just stats. We read more about numbers rather than thinking about the loss of individual life.

Yes, people do good things every day and many are still ticks. Expand your mind, Miss Narrow ;)

It's heartening to see that we can value ONE human life again. For so long, people have been just ticks on a piece of paper and this example gives us hope.

Super work. We should club together and show our humanity!!

Language / I want to learn Polish. Where to start? [180]

Polish is definitely not much easier to learn that English. That's just plain false! No offence, but you likely learned the basics which can be easy. The rest of what you wrote was spot on though.

Language / Problems Polish People Have with Learning English [63]

Poles need to be reassured also that pronunciation is mixed and varied. For example, take Wrocław's valuable advice for a start. Ask many Irishmen to say 33 1/3 and see how differently they say it from many other native speakers. Tirty tree and a turd, LOL

Abbreviations come with instinct and practice. The boss wants you could have another meaning ;) ;)

History / The Celts in Poland. [71]

I know that but you know how land and territory works ;) ;)

This is unmistakably Celtic. Theme from Harry's Game done only 2 years ago. Imtheochaidh soir is siar, A dtáinig ariamh an ghealach is an ghrian

Newgrange by Clannad.

This has video images of what Seanny has shown above. Any true Celt should feel pride when listening to and watching this.

God Bless Clannad!!

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

Well, there was a bit of both and that's it really. Żegota did their part to rescue Jews and many Poles tried in isolated incidents. As ever, it works two ways.

Language / Problems Polish People Have with Learning English [63]

Just like non-Poles grapple with irregular plurals, i.e 6 butelek and not the logical 6 butelków, the Poles do the same with furniture, advice, evidence, news and knowledge to name but a few. Advices is so common. Yes, advice can become countable if you put words of or pieces of but, by itself, it's an uncountable noun.

In fact, it's so noticeable that Poles have problems even recognising the 's'. When they read, they often ignore it which confuses me.

The Poles don't have articles like we do. We have a broader range of tenses. The Poles use double negatives where we don't, e.g nic nie wiem whereas we say I don't know anything or I know nothing.

The Polish alphabet has many specific marks, like ź, ż, ó, ę and ą for example.

Any further help needed, please ask.

Life / Why are Poles in other countries called "Plastic Poles"? [168]

Where I come from, respect is earned. Is there something special in being a teacher's pet? Here in Poland, the teacher's pets are not that rich at all. Kids are kids and standards are standards. Are you advocating preferential treatment here?

Oh dear, what have we here? ;) Funny, it doesn't make me proud at all. Treat you with respect, what hogwash!! Respect is earned, not bought!

The groundlings probably just play ball and are more realistic, not pulling any fast ones.

Why aren't you earning $900,000 a year may I ask? Are you a 'groundling' too?
