Love / Living with a Polish man, but he has a drinking problem? [60]

Surely I'm not alone in feeling that the gentleman in question is unlikely to have won many prizes for his sensible behaviour.

Well no, any man who wastes good soup by spilling it over himself rather than eating it first (or at least putting it down) is bound to be a tad foolish.

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

Warsaw can hardly be held up as an example of urbane dwellers :p

I always thought that some Polish weddings were very sad in this respect - people feel obliged (or are pressured) into inviting lots of obscure family members, but then have very few friends there. Not every wedding is like that, of course (and mine certainly wasn't) - but still.

1 question, why was he holding soup when he punched the kid?

The amusing part is that he covered himself in soup after belting the kid. Wouldn't it have made more sense to throw the soup at the kid?

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

This is old Polish tradition, that was observed by christian Poles (where they lived was irrelevant). If now some couples choose to do something else is their choice.

They however do exist - village traditions tend to involve inviting absolutely everyone who can be considered "family", even if you haven't got a clue who they are or what they do.

Not inviting 150+ people to the reception is getting close to being a city tradition.

Indeed. I can't imagine the horror of a wedding where endless drunk uncles were involved.

I've seen one wedding where the groom's family were getting stuck straight into the booze as soon as they got to the reception - it was a disgusting sight. It's fine if you're 20 something, but to see a bunch of old blokes throw back vodka like there was no tomorrow was just...eh.

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

They get away lightly considering how much vodka they have to give away a bit later in the day. It's just a tradition which is part of the day. There's no intimidation involved.

Ah, but at least the guests participate in the (other) dreadful tradition of handing over stacks of cash :p if it was me, I'd be giving them bottles of rat poison or something...

What was interesting - I saw a wedding in Ukraine, in a village close to the Polish border, and it was pretty much identical.

Real Estate / Good places to live in Krakow [20]

You pay around 30% after everything has been taken.

Higher. More like 38%.

Love / Polish Wedding Blessing [16]

A village tradition through and through - anyone doing it in cities nowadays is quite clearly of village stock.

Where I live they are more likely to be stopped by young guys who demand vodka before letting them pass.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see the humour in having to give people vodka. It sounds dreadful...

Life / Can most people in Poland speak Russian? [43]

no, very few speak russian. considerably more people in the 20-40 year old range speak german than russian.

Not quite. In the cities - yes. But in rural areas? In those areas, they tended to keep Russian because - frequently - it was difficult/impossible to find good other language teachers. Hence - the knowledge among the mid 20's isn't as poor as you might think it to be.

I heard it's more common in eastern Poland.

It probably is - it would be incredibly difficult to find a good foreign language teacher there (especially as in the early 90's - anyone with language skills would go make their fortune rather than staying in a rural area) - and so Russian was kept. No bad thing, really - I know at least two cases where children who have been pathetic at English have turned out to be quite good in Russian.

Genealogy / What ethnicity would you say a person would be if someone came from kresy Poland [41]

You conveniently forgot about Lwów culture

Culture that the Poles did their best to destroy during the II RP, yes.

And if this personal relations do not impress you then go to wikipedia

Most of that list are products of either the Austrian or the Communist systems.

Sorry, but while I can accept Lwów to have been a great city during the II RP and before, it doesn't change the fact that the vast majority of Kresy was and is to this day an utter dump.

Life / Can most people in Poland speak Russian? [43]

More than you think - there's plenty of people in their mid 20's without Communist baggage who learnt Russian in school and who are capable of using it.

UK, Ireland / The number of Anti-English Poles... [228]

There are many anti-english people in the UK. Just talk to some other ethnic groups in the UK...

That's because the UK is made up of several different nations. A bit of inter-community strife is to be expected in such a system.

What about anti-polish people in Poland? There's a bunch that post on PF.

Like yourself and other "defenders", I suppose.

Do you honestly think that if someone was "anti-Polish", they would stay here?

MediaWatch has a tin foil hat going spare, I hear...

Life / The major religion of Poland? [33]

Actually - if they were assimilated, then they would be seen first and foremost as Polish, not Jewish. The two aren't incompatible, but the primary identity would be Polish.

Are you suggesting that there is a direct link between language used and religion in Poland? That by speaking Polish one erases their given religion.

It's a whole other thread, but there's certainly something about Catholicism that lends itself to rampant nationalist fever. The Utashe knew a thing or two about that...

Same and I don't see it. In my view most slavs look the same

You live thousands of miles away, so of course you don't see much difference.

p.s. and i cant vote here!.... communism never died!

In which country can you vote if you aren't a citizen?

(incidentally, EU citizens have the right to vote in local and European elections)

If i become unemployed how easy would it be for me to get housing and benefits? I bet it's easier in the UK. end of!

Actually, it's easier here.

Whether it's worth claiming is another question.

Work / How to find a job in Poznań? I have Msc in management and speak English/Hungarian/French [9]

Do you guys have any idea how to find a job there?

Try the Easyjet call centre - arvato.pl/praca_aplikacja.aspx

Speaking English and Hungarian should get you a job there no problem - it's not a great place to work, but it's a good place to start off.

I'm about to move to Poznań to my Polish girlfriend but I'm a bit worried about finding a job in that city.

Give me a shout when you move here and I'll introduce you to a lot of friendly people, including our pet Hungarian here ;)

Life / Can most people in Poland speak Russian? [43]

all people older than about 30 now were taught Russian in schools

It's still very common in rural schools for Russian to be a main language - I know at least three different schools where they're teaching Russian alongside English and not German/Spanish/French.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

That exactly what commie would say !

No, it's exactly what anyone with half a brain would say. Investing in children (the future of Poland) or a bunch of fat, spoiled old men with no interests other than buying yet more expensive dresses for themselves? Come on!

Wait, are people actually trying to argue that since the RCC is going unchecked with regard to their property and financial claims in this country, that it then follows that Jews should be free to do so if they wish to as well?

Why not - I'm all for religions being equally treated. The RCC has robbed Poland, now it's the Jewish turn.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

Poland was occupied by Communism which it would not have had if wasn't for Moscow.

That's a bit of a bold statement, especially considering that the pre-war authorities had suppressed support for Communism through some highly dubious means, and that the whole idea did enjoy quite a bit of support in Europe.

It's quite possible that even without the USSR actually playing a role, Poland would have gone Communist after WW2.

History / Why are Jews pestering Poland for "proper" WW2 monetary restitution/reparations? [750]

Looks like you two have an agenda. To quote you " a bunch of bigoted twats banging on and on and on and on and on about RCC for the rest of eternity"

When you live here and see schoolchildren being kicked out of their school, or people going cold and hungry in dismal social housing in order to provide an institution operated by fat, spoiled, wealthy old men with even more cash - you do tend to oppose such things.

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

Almost certainly. Those damned Jewish-Russians!

Interestingly, the USA recognised the "new" Polish state as early as 6th July 1945.

Also interestingly - if we want to talk about legitimacy - the 1935 Constitution of Poland was in violation of the 1921 one, while the 1944 July Manifesto, the 1947 Small Constitution and the 1952 PRL Constitution were lawful in respect to the previous one.

And people still want to talk about legitimacy?

History / Would you classify the Poland's Communist years as a "Soviet occupation" ? [221]

Apart from some obscure definition of the international law which is not worth the paper it has been written on we can agree that the communist years was a Soviet occupation.

But we can't - because the historical facts suggest otherwise. If it was an occupation, why was the PRL recognised as the legitimate Polish state?

Per usual delph talking nonsense, BS and propaganda.

You really are in some sort of hyper denial, aren't you?

Just in case anybody hasn't heard of the case which Delph refers to:

Thanks :) The case is an utter disgrace - and the same story has been repeated throughout Poland. The utter robbery by the RCC, almost as soon as the system changed is going to be a scandal in years to come. Let's not mention how nuns were working with ex-SB members to steal more, as well.

As is this one - link only in Polish, I'm afraid

News / Wisława Szymborska died. [30]

They are awarded subjectivly and in many cases the decisions were highly criticized...

Are you sure you're Polish?
