Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

Somebody here mentioned Biedronka also sells Cheddar...Is that on a regular basis? Because I never saw in our local store. I for sure like Cheddar. My wife and daughters think it is a bit odd...But they are Polish, what do they know :)

If you find some in your local Biedronka, let the forum know where you saw it. It's not been at any of the Biedronkas here for about 6 months or more. It's not as good as the Lidl one, but it's OK when Lidl doesn't have any cheddar as it's cheap and reasonable.

It seems a bit odd that they are carrying a lot of the same lines again in the following week's promotion (2 December) including the exact same cheese varieties. However, there was certainly the demand here, so they should be sensible and carry these and Adams Foods cheese lines all year round.

lidl.pl/cps/rde/SID-FDFD6ADF-2A162DD9/www_lidl_pl/hs.xsl/oferta.htm?id=129

I would probably buy if they carried it regularly as it makes a good cheese sauce, despite not being the flavour I usually go for in sandwiches.

Food / Where to buy British mature Cheddar Cheese and salted butter in Poland? [289]

InWroclaw, cheers for the information, 100zl duly spent on the stuff ;)

Cheese successfully acquired earlier today. Bought four packages.

Well done folks for the prompt action, as (s)he who hesitates etc ... it's all sold out now at my local, I think it all went yesterday :o)

Bought - I think Kerry Gold - at Kaufland or Lidl in Gdynia about 10 days ago. Can't beat it under the grill on baked spuds or on sarmies with raw onion. Now if I could only find good steak....

Isn't it 12 a pack of 200g though? Quite steep. No wonder the Lidl stuff sold out as it's about half the price of that.

From the other thread:-

Yes I have to agree. In UK and USA there are loads of frozen dinners. ut hardly anything here in Poland except for pizzas.Have you tried the Tetley Classic tea bags from Tesco? 7,99 for 100 and they brew a darn good cuppa.

Thanks T, I'll look for them next time, not sure they had them though. They used to do their own Finest tea, but stopped that over a year ago.

Heading off to my local Lidl this morning... in the snow no less!Hopefully they have it in stock.

I hope you found plenty in stock. No snow here yet thankfully!

Cheese in position and on sale NOW at my local Lidl.

There are 180 approx. on sale. There's also some Farmhouse variety.

The Isle of Man cheddar is slightly sweet, a bit griity as it's a strongish mature.

The Scottish mature is orange in colour, rather sourish, quite strong too.

The Farmhouse I've not bought, as they're usually too strong and gritty (naturally forming in mature cheese).

I don't think these products are sufficiently to my taste for me to stock up, certainly not as likeable (for me) as the usual mature cheddar during Brit week in the black packs by Hatherwood or Adams Foods UK. However, they probably are exactly what they should be if you like those cheddar varieties. I'm more a standard mature cheddar bloke, preferably with vegetarian rennet too. The use by dates are mid Feb 2014.

I'll put these products to use in a cheese sauce no doubt, or the occasional sandwich. But at the moment they'd not take my custom from Biedronka mature cheddar (if it ever goes on sale again) nor Cathedral City mature if they reduced the price back to sanity.

so thanks for this

You're welcome, and I did a quick check of Lidl today locally, and although they have cleared a (too small!) space for the cheese, it is yet to be on sale. Hopefully it'll be brought out of the stock room tomorrow or Monday morning. Looks like they will only have space here for about 150 packs.

Your cheese updates are as always appreciated :)

You're very welcome, and am glad it's of use!

Lidl will have 'Deluxe' branded Isle of Man vintage (probably quite strong) and Scottish mature (probably a medium mature) officially from Monday but in some branches the stock will appear today or tomorrow, and then typically it sells out fast at some branches. If they're as good as the Adams Foods UK cheese they had earlier this year in black packs I'll be in for a good few.

Yes, they seem to have paused their 'Week' promotions. But, if they do another British Week next year I'd recommend their frozen breaded or battered haddock too -- it was amazing, and had the authentic taste of the fried fish that you'd normally get from fish and chips in a real take away.

USA, Canada / Returning to Poland! Has anyone seen this influx of people from the US? [27]

Clearly you've never been to Radom, a city which only looks good via a bombsight.

I had no idea what a bombsight was until I just looked it up, because I reckoned it unlikely you'd make a spelling error.

So, just discovered it's some sort of aiming device from an over-flying (bomber) aircraft, as opposed to a bombsite which is the result of bomb damage.

Law / KPMG Investment in Poland report 2013 [4]

Interesting read, thanks for posting, not bad English either, well done.

But, isn't it a little bearish if I'm reading the stats correctly, eg unemployment up ... 2010 12,4% 2011 12,5% 2012 13,4% (13.2% H1 2013) unless it's just come down a lot and I missed that in the text during my quick browse. Is that good news for an investor? ie more choice of candidates? Then there's the DD, it seems to be down. Isn't that a bit negative and possibly deflationary, as borne out by the price of goods and services growth index (as shown, also down quite a bit). Wages seem to be up though, by about 10% in 2-3 years which is quite a leap. I guess those lucky enough to have jobs are managing OK, which is why I see lots of new cars on the roads and more new flats selling than I had expected.

Well, no doubt if I'm misreading it on my quick skim, someone will put me straight :o)

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Taking these reports as face value, in your experience where is buyer funding coming from?

If we take Wrocław for example, we have estate after estate of new flats, all over the place. I noted the other day that one 1-year old development seems to have about a 75% occupancy rate while another (4-year old development) up the road from there seems similar or slightly less with the devs still pushing flats online and with banners (prices having been cut by something like 30% if memory serves). However, this newer block does not seem to be cut price at all and even if a 20% discount is assumed then the prices still come in at just below 5K a square metre before finishing.

With the likely price of most units being around 450K PLN, how are buyers affording it?
Family money? Lots of wealth, more than people realise?
Money from working abroad? Remarkably clever saving up of typically minimum wage incomes in the UK, Eire or Germany etc?
Mortgages (450K given from a typical single yearly wage 50K or 100K joint income I presume)?
From the sale of a secondary market city property? Yet so many here have yellowing or faded for sale banners and don't sell for years.

Bit of a mystery to me as to where the money's coming from, which is why I genuinely ask. I do hope it's not lax lending, namely liar loans or speculatively optimistic multiples.

Nice timing for local devs here if this works out for them, as several estates are just about ready now to sell into any strength if this story is true. Of course, they will to some extent have to compete with each other but if the demand really is there that won't be a problem surely?

Has anyone in Poland seen this influx of people from the US.

Only 1 that I can think of in Wroc. However, it's possible that American Polonia speaking Polish here wouldn't get my attention anyway and so I'd not know. But, at least 1 for sure, as I said. I don't think they're returners from the windy city though.

UK, Ireland / Polish man on UK TV show, ,,Britain's Got Talent'' -- real or fake? [6]

Not that there's any reason why a Polish man shouldn't be a good singer and appear on a British TV show, but there are comments at YT suggesting this video is a spoof. Is it? I never watch these shows, but was wondering if it was a faked video because it seems to have been done very well if it is.

News / Krakow -- the third most polluted EU city, "equivalent to 2500 cigarettes a year" [9]

I guess that the problem is only during cold days. Solution is to move to Tatry then.

I saw some footage today on the TV, I thought it was an industrial city in China.

People living in Krakow are so far up their own asses that they are well used to breathing in pollution :D

I've never been there, I am yet to find all this out. I once met a very nice woman from Krakow in Wroc airport, she was nicer than many Wroccers.

News / Krakow -- the third most polluted EU city, "equivalent to 2500 cigarettes a year" [9]

Krakow has been ranked third behind Bulgaria's Pernik and Plovdiv in a ranking of the most polluted cities in the EU. photo - Wikimedia Commons/Zakysant A report looking at air pollution 383 cities in Europe, by the European Environment Agency, found Bulgaria and Poland have some of the worst black spots for air quality. Other Polish cities in the top 10 most polluted in the EU were Gliwice, Zabrze, Sosnowiec and Katowice, where the main causes of poor air quality come from emissions from power stations, industry and car exhaust. - See more at: thenews.pl/1/9/Artykul/150233,Krakow-third-most-polluted-city-in-EU#sthash.iKdakh4z.dpuf

It's why Krakow is one of the most heavily polluted cities in all of Europe."

The air is so dirty that every man, woman and child breathes in the equivalent of 2,500 cigarettes every year.

Krakovians are angry about the issue. There have been several demonstrations in the streets calling for action.

This is not something they usually mention anywhere.

Life / Do Polish children have a typical bedtime? [11]

Friday nights and occasional weekdays it was around 1 to 1.45 am if like the kids in one of the flats I lived in.

Each flat I've lived in here has had problems at night of some sort -- just never encountered that in the UK in flats there. I've had all-night DIY, nocturnal and very early start people, kids at all hours, dogs at midnight upstairs, marching about adults for hours from 2 am, basically you name it.

Jon, thank you for the links. I assume they're all from the 11/11/2013 Warsaw march. But whichever year, the images are disturbing, to say the least.

... Unless they were mistakenly interpreted à la youtube.com/watch?v=v8t62zUatFc

Sadly I doubt it.

Travel / Ryanair cut charges. Poles to take advantage? [20]

I don't have a problem with Ryan Air. Without them, I'd be stuffed, frankly.

Also found the cabin staff and 'drivers' to be very pleasant & professional. Only ever met one unpleasant cabin crew and she had her boyfriend aboard and maybe they'd had a row. She was a right cow, but she's literally the only ghastly one I ever encountered. The others all behaved impeccably. Seen some abrupt ground crew, mind, at STN, but had that with other non-budget airlines too.

Travel / Ryanair cut charges. Poles to take advantage? [20]

Karma will get them back when they're older.

:o)

Seriously, I've only used Ryanair twice and none of the horror stories I'd heard came true. I was expecting them to measure handluggage etc but they didn't. And it isn't any hardship to walk to the plane.

I have seen them routinely put a measuring box over cabin bags twice now, the rough maths would be about 1 in 10 or 1 in 15 flights. But I've also seen people get on with bags that were definitely too big. This size check seems to have happened mostly in the UK, rather than Poland. They walk up the queue with the box and place it over the cabin bag. Those whose bag doesn't fit are asked to step out of the queue, and I assume they have to cough up and pay more, or maybe they just get told off. But it does happen, albeit not that often in my experience. Anyone really taking the mick with an obviously significantly oversized case probably would get stopped at the desk when the boarding pass is checked.

Travel / Ryanair cut charges. Poles to take advantage? [20]

Some people interpret it as forcing them to pay extra 5 euro per person in order to seat with companion.

I think during the last day before boarding, seat reservations will be free.

This they've always had - you can sit near the front for a few quid and get priority boarding - useful if you need a fast getaway.

Yes, but it was ten quid or so. I sometimes paid it, other times just got myself near the front of the regular queue and got my usual seat of preference, but alas almost always near some screaming child that gobs in my hair.

They're also allowing reserved seats for GBP5 from Feb and cutting a few other charges. See link for full details.

UK, Ireland / Former minister admits UK messed up on immigration [78]

because many of them don't live in areas where there are toilets or refuse collection facilities."

There are barely refuse collection facilities in Britain these days, the Roma may be shocked to find things are worse than wherever they came from. independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/battle-of-the-bins-defra-stats-show-fortnightly-refuse-collections-increases-recycling-8434239.html

As for public toilets, I've lost count of the number of times I've seen people have to "go" anywhere they can, but that's being somewhat addressed now by the installation of portable loos in strategic spots in Wrocław (little blue cubicles, very basic but better than nothing if you need to urinate). But go to London on a Friday night and you'll pass drinkers urinating in the streets, and not just the men. Frankly, I'm taken aback that Romas aren't disgusted with the lack of public loos in the UK!

dailymail.co.uk/health/article-2097420/Its-inconvenience-The-lack-public-loos-bad-health.html

Probably not, because one figure suggests that up to 300,000 Brits are leaving every year, so there's a place for them.

Some expat Brits, apparently mostly from Spain, are trying to return and buy back in to the UK, and finding it very hard after the rampant HPI seen in many areas. But yes, many are clearing off, they've had enough.

UK, Ireland / Former minister admits UK messed up on immigration [78]

Former home secretary Jack Straw has admitted Labour's decision to drop immigration restrictions on eastern European migrants was a "spectacular mistake". ...handing immediate working rights to Poles and other nationalities who joined the EU in 2004 was a "well-intentioned policy we messed up".

..."One spectacular mistake in which I participated (not alone) was in lifting the transitional restrictions on the eastern European states like Poland and Hungary which joined the EU in mid-2004.

news.sky/story/straw-admits-spectacular-immigration-mistake-10428153

Apparently there are over 2 million Poles living abroad, and I think the latest figures suggest 900,000 in the UK and 200,000 in Ireland.

Yet, come to cities like Wrocław and it already seems crowded, especially with the hundreds of new blocks of flats (or it seems like hundreds) everywhere.

Will Poles return in great numbers anytime soon? Somehow I doubt it, as the ones I speak to say they're happy in Britain and their kids are settled into schools there.

Which do you think is more likely to be biased?

If I knew what the score really was, I'd say. So, I'm merely reporting what I saw on the TV. TBH, I am genuinely surprised to hear there were 2 marches, perhaps that's an embarrassing error on my part, but like I said I am not a Pole and watching from the outside. My own philosophy is freedom and democracy, fairness and equality. I have no agenda, and no political bias as such.

News / Skins vs anarchists in Warsaw [93]

Which march were you watching?

What seemed like a very long march down main roads, past shopping areas and the like. Everyone looked pretty much the same as any normal march in the UK, although Trwam did show the burning rainbow and for a moment I thought that it was a legitimate part of some ceremony!! Doh! However, when I switched over to TVN, I saw a small number of people running around surrounded by orange-vest wardens (I assume they were march wardens) and there were people throwing things and wearing hoodies or whatever, but it wasn't clear as it was on a zoom lens from above. But back to the TV Trwam coverage: it looked like a big sea of people, all quite normal, pretty much like any bunch I'd see queuing in McDonald's in Southampton, nothing extraordinary about them, no violence visible. A few were chanting Poland white and red, I think, which since last year's ad campaign always reminds me to buy some makowa Dan Cake at Biedronka...

Which of the two marches? The traditional one or th eright-wing one?

I wasn't aware of there being 2 marches. I had assumed the main one got hijacked by some idiots. Did I assume wrong, guv?
