Work / An American studying in Poland - CELTA, SAT? [20]

they expect to have to pay to get into a good Uni so when they see a Uni with a fancy european name that charges high prices they could be conned into believing they will gain the same level of education as in the US

Quite right-if you want good education-be careful.
Here you have some ranking:

You can even find someone in similar situation and ask them for some advice,

Work / An American studying in Poland - CELTA, SAT? [20]

If you're willing to pay, your grades are meaningless as long as you've finished high school.

That's quite right-especially with private universities.I can't recommend them.

Absolutely the wrong reason to come here.

I agree.Let's just hope that despite wrong reason he 'll have a great time here.

Will the SAT make me a better candidate?

I'm sorry I can't help you here.

Life / Do Poles drink before noon? [95]

I was referring to the communist times

I know.Still, people got drunk because they wanted to.

Coffee houses offer people a sober place to meet.

You ever heard about "kawiarnia"?

Life / Do Poles drink before noon? [95]

I know people who are teetotalers because it was their form of passive-resistance against the powers that were. Keep you drunk enough and you can't organize yourselves into groups to change the course of history.

I think that's s crap.People get drunk because they want to do it.

Also, I think, the whole 100% employment thing must have left people seeing no need to better themselves.

I agree 100%.I saw the difference with my own eyes.My mother was an accountant and in her office people were often drunk (although I must admit they always were able to do their job on time-they were really great specialists) and it took place even in the 90's since nothing changed in their office but then there was reform of administration and Starostwo Powiatowe was created. It was clear to everyone that anyone who's stupid enough to get drunk will be fired. And you know what?I never again saw drunk person in that place.

And the introduction of coffee houses.

I cannot see the connection.
P.S.I got to know great places to hide "półlitrówkę" in the office :)

Life / Do Poles drink before noon? [95]

I dont't see what's the problem. If you don't have to work or drive then you can do what you want.Is it beter to drink after noon even if you go to work at 6p.m.? I rather avoid drinking before noon but not because of some "magic hour" but because my head aches when I drink so early.

Po polsku / Dlaczego uczysz siÄ™ Polskiego? [101]

Genealogy / Coats of arms of Polish cities [51]

Acording to the legend for a long time there was only half of the eagle in the coat but then our ruler went to Opava. When he was coming home his carriage's wheel broke and one servant put half of the wheel beside the coat.Mieszko PlÄ…tonogi decided that it was very good combination and that's how it was created.

UK, Ireland / Crap parenting in our UK youth today (in Poland it's a little better) [52]

Sometimes when I see a parent explaining stuff to 4 year olds it makes me laugh.

Really?

You know what the result is, they usually listen to what is said to them, then just do whatever wrong they were doing, anyway

You say in simple words what you mean and say what the consequences will be.that's all.

they are not able to understand the explanation.

I met many childrens and if you keep it simple there is no reason they wouldn't understand.

.My brother never has to spank his children

That's the point.

made clear so that the child understands that this is what the consequence will be.

It's enough that the child knows that there will be some consequences.

.He believes in talking things through with his children.

That's actually great.

but if that fails,

We're adults and it's our job to find other ways.

I too was slapped in the face by my father. It was humiliating

In my family slapping someone in the face is the worst offense. My father did it once to my sister and afterwards he regretted it.There's something really humiliating about slapping someone in the face.

common sense that there is a difference between hitting your child and beating them to a pulp.

My sister once during an argument was the only one that was against hitting.Everybody was against her and then sudenly one man said: oh,yeah, the last time I spank my four year old and the blood run from his nose...Everybody froze and there wasn't one person then that would say a good word for spanking.

Hitting a child is in 99% parent's frustration.People usually spank their children not methodically(and that's what upbringing should be-methodical and consequent dealing with the child) but when they are angry, scared e.t.c.You can deal with a child differently.

I wouldn't put in jail parents that spank their children(really spank not hit) but I think they should be informed that that's not the best way to deal with your child.I'm sick and tired of trying to explain that spanking is no method to upbring your child.

Love / How would Polish people react to a forginer in Poland? [36]

A other reason, why Polish girls date foreigners is, to get prestige in front of their friends.

Thank you so much for this insight into my soul.I never knew I was such a b**ch.

im a tall 6foot 5 (gonna be) hispanic and part hawian and im also half white(my moms side are all almost european)

If you want just easy sex go to clubs and like in any other country find the "party girls".Every club in every country is full of them.If you want something genuine look for girls that have something more in their haeds than just makeup, fashion and finding a rich husband.

News / Poles, Polonians and aliens on Pussy Riot? [182]

If that's the case they should be ignored not thrown to jail.

This has to do with the west abandoning Christianity, being indifferent to it

Here's the news to you- it's people choice to be indifferent.I always hear that I can't offend people of faith and thet's all right with me but what about atheists?I've been called many things when I said I'm an atheist. We have to respect the people freedom of faith but what about my right not to be pushed into any faith?

with feeling strong animosity

When church is messing around with politic I feel very strong animosity.

Specially Catholicism.

It's the strongest and right now the most powerful religion in this region so obviously people pay attention and criticize.

did they vandalize or destroy anything in the church?

Good point.

the ban on causing disturbances in hospitals, schools, churches and cemeteries, should be strictly enforced.

Real Estate / Cousin stole my dads home in Poland... [49]

I do wonder why they didn't follow the correct procedures once she died. Could it be that someone's told them that the flat sold for a considerable amount of money - and now, and only now, they're showing an interest?

I'm personally curious but I think it's also important for his case.Don't you think the judge will ask why they haven't done something about it earlier?

Real Estate / Cousin stole my dads home in Poland... [49]

Ok,I have one more question-why didn't you go to the court earlier? You had many years to do that.Have you even know your grandmother died?Because sorry if I offend you,but it looks like you didn't even call her once in a while...

Real Estate / Cousin stole my dads home in Poland... [49]

In my opinion there is no chance you're going to win.First of all-you're too late.It doesn't mean anything that she was mentally ill-you had your chance but you didn't fail the complaint.Second-I'm not sure about the ownership part-if she signed it off to your cousin's husband while she was alive I'm not sure if it's part of the heritage. And third-it's obvious you didn't have real relationship with her.Your dad's cousin can state that she took care of her and you're just a jackhal.

News / Marion Barry insults Polish people calling them "Polacks" [33]

Hey pal relax.

I didn't create this story.

Of course you didin't but it's clear to me that he used word "Polacks" with no intention to offend so what's the big deal?Btw the word Polacks is clearly from word Polak so I don't know what the problem is.

Language / Help with the Polish plurals and describing of objects? [22]

I'm not suprised you're confused.
When you talk about dogs it's similar to russian:
One-pies,talerz,widelec
Two,three,four-psy,talerze,widelce
Five- psów,talerzy,widelców
I don't remember why it's that way but you have to just remember that there's a difference.

And then the numbers keep changing eg - jeden to jedno, dwa to Dwie, trzy to Trzech etc.

Numbers in Polish change according to gender. If the webside is any good you should have lesson about it

I can say 5 (Pięć) and building (budynek) but how would I write it. I assume the form of budynek changes because that's what was happening in the lesson but I don't understand why? (budynków, budynki?)

Pięć budynków

And also, would I just use "sÄ…" for the 'there are'?

Not "sÄ…" but "jest"
Tam jest pięć budynków but:
Tam sÄ… trzy budynki - this is again connected to the difference one,two,three,four---five

Also "Three buildings are not green"'

'are not green' = nie sÄ… zielone

What form would three budynek take?

Trzy budynki nie sÄ… zielone

News / A Second Look at Poland's Future. [21]

It's pretty obvious that we're (as a nation) not going in the right direction.

Interesting.I didn't notice.

Better yet, go to Poland

I live in Poland all my life and I still don't get what's your point

Polonia is all Poland's really got in terms of hope.

Excuse me?What the heck are you talking about?

Life / Why is Prostitution still legal in Poland? [106]

In my humble opinion prostitution should be legal.Even more-should be taxed(although it's hard to do) and the girls should take regular health check.Of course they should not be forced into prostitution,
