Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

Your a**-kissing of Polish culture is beginning to disurb me

It's good to be disturbed sometimes

But as far as I know I haven't said much about Polish culture at all.

Life / Do expats living in Poland speak Polish? [233]

Not the majority view? No offence but that's bullsh@t! Firstly, it's not a 'view', it's a fact. Statiscally, English has the highest number of distinct words (around 250,000) of all languages in the world.

Your lack of linguistic knowledge disturbs me.

You never studied linguistics, did you? What you write shows you don't know anything about these things. The number of words says almost nothing about a language. That's widely accepted in linguistic science.

Ask people who speak both English and Polish fluently, which language they think best differentiates subtle shades of an expression? Especially when it comes to emotions it's generally accepted, by people who speak both Polish and English, that Polish have more subtle shades. Look for example at the diminutive forms of the Polish langauge, and that's just one example.

Love / Polish Girls negative or positive personality trait? [267]

and some other persons

Sometimes I get the feeling that some people on this forum (incl. you) have problems to figure out, and understand, how other people feel and think. This is an essential social skill. Maybe it's time to try to think outside the box? Some people find this more difficult than others, but it's not impossible, and it's very healthy.

I am interested in a Polish Girl.
You are only Polish by birth.
And not much else by what I can see.

So, all Polish girls are the same? All kinds of personalities exist in Poland, as well as in all other countries.

I think it's disrespectful to live in a country not knowing the language at all. And it makes your own life much more difficult as well. Especially if you are in a country where they don't speak so much English. If you stay for a long time in another country you should try to integrate. We can see what happen to people who don't.

I speak some Polish. Not extremely well, but it's improving. I learned from several sources, but mostly from talking to people and a book I have. I'm quite interested in linguistics.

Love / Berlin vs Poznan - fashion of Polish women [36]

But of course, everything Arab is bad

And they say everything about Jews is bad. Both sides are brainwashed by religious fanatics. But the scary thing about being brainwashed is that people don't realize that they are brainwashed. So they always say; No, I'm not brainwashed.

And you write this just because you want us to have this extremely important information?

Or if I change the question. What are you trying to tell us?

Love / Polish Girls negative or positive personality trait? [267]

compulsive lying

The question shouldn't be if they lie or not. It should be if they lie more than girls from other countries. I've lived in Poland for some time now. And I can say that some of the Polish girls I know are the most honest people I have met. So summa summarum, I don't think it has so much to do with nationality. And IF it has something to do with nationality I'd say that the average Pole I have met have been more honest than the average person from other countries.

Language / I NEED TO LEARN POLISH QUICKLY AND EFFICIENTLY! [45]

It's difficult to learn one of the most difficult languages in the world quickly.

But start with basic phrases and expressions. So you can greet the people you're going to visit in PL. Then sign up for a course, get a book+CD, and try to talk to Polish people more and more. Probably your BF can help you with that more and more as you progress. The best way to learn Polish is (of course) to be in Poland and interact with Poles.

I can guarantee that it's not impossible to learn, but it's a lot of hard work and it takes time.

Good Luck!

History / Have Poles blood on their hands? :) [496]

I guess we all have if we look at specific persons and specific times in history. But it's a matter of definition, nothing else.

Love / SHE'S 25, HE'S 85 (Polish actor Andrzej Łapicki) -- ANY FUTURE? [82]

but I guarantee that there is nothing better for an older person to know that the person next to them in bed is younger and you and no one else has a claim on their body.

You can guarantee that it's your opinion. I can guarantee that different people have different preferences. Some people are more sexually attracted to ppl that are older than themselves and vice versa. Some ppl want someone 10 years older and some want someone 10 years younger. Everybody knows that.

Everyone doesn't have the same preferences as you have.

Language / Polite forms in Polish vs English [49]

I haven't read all the replies here.

But if you find the informal infinitive too unpolite you can use Proszę + infinitive of the verb.

Ex:
Proszę wejść!
Proszę czekać na mnie!

If you would address the person Pan/Pani, you would probably use this form of infinitive expressions.

Study / Is Poland a good place to study for Black Africans? [90]

We can go to eg. Zimbabwe and see how long white persons would survive? Or in a ghetto in USA?

All racism is bad. But it disturbs me that black people's racism toward white ppl is never discussed. Politicians, media etc. don't care, and that makes people really angry.

Life / Which brand of Mosquito repellant would you recommend (Warsaw), or... [22]

I knew a guy who was on steroids thus had very high blood pressure, after a work out making his blood pressure even higher a mosquito bit him and exploded.

No. Because they bite into small veins and capillaries (not arteries). The pressure in these types vessels are very low even if you have high (arterial) blood pressure. So I would say it's medically impossible. If it exploded, ruptured or whatever, it must have been because of something else.

Actually quite surprising. Doesn't sound Polish, sounds more like Middle East, Africa or something like that.

You've definitely peaked (awoken) my curiosity, Szwedwpolsce:-)

I think only members can send PMs (not PMS... hehe). Anyway, I think you should register.

Maybe it's not that interesting. But since you're asking. Actually I haven't taken any English course since I was in High School. But I do study medicine (in English), that's enough for the moment. So now you know what I'm doing in Poland. I also "study" Polish, but I have never taken any course.

Med vänliga hälsningar från (för tillfället) Sverige

It's not so much of a mystery. ;)

This is really off-topic, so you can write me a PM if you're still curious.

Language / Future tense with bawić się [34]

#23
Szwedwpolsce, how did you become interested in Polish?

I live (most of the year) and study (in English) in Poland.

I found I frequently spoke Swedish more fluently than the average Scandinavian whom I met spoke English.

Then you should be proud. Swedes were ranked #1 by the EU as the best English speakers in Europe (except native speakers).

Polish has a phonetic alphabet, Swedish hasn't

Yes, the pronunciation (Swedish) is very difficult because one letter or combination of letters can be pronounced in very many different ways, and it's often unpredictable. In Polish it's pretty easy to predict how a word is pronounced by looking at the letters in the word. For learning Swedish one can listen to native speakers and finally one will feel how the word should be pronounced. Everyone can do that.

Language / Future tense with bawić się [34]

And now an aspect usage question: Is the correct sentence "Zabawiłem się wczoraj" (just that once) vs. "Bawiłem się latem na urlopie....." (all the time)???

When it comes to the past tense I have seen that it's not as simple as the future tense regarding perfective/imperfective. There are several factors to pay attention too. I don't remember all of them. But there is a pretty good explaination, in one of the first chapters, of the book "301 Polish Verbs".

And prepositions seldom corresponds well when translating between languages.

Din polska ar ju valdigt bra! Ar du antligen polsk eller svensk?

Thanks. I'm 100% Swedish. And my Polish is not that good. There are still many basic expressions I can't translate into Polish.

Language / Future tense with bawić się [34]

Thanks everyone!

"Pójdę na operę."

To express future, why not just something like "(jutro) idę na..."?
Isn't iść a verb where you usually use the "normal present tense" to express something in the future?

Language / Future tense with bawić się [34]

For example...

Is it correct to say:
Mam nadzieję, że będziesz się świetnie bawić na tej imprezie.

Or is it better to use a construction with perfective zabawisz się? (without będziesz of course)

Suggestions?

Life / Which brand of Mosquito repellant would you recommend (Warsaw), or... [22]

You should use something that contains 20-30% DEET (N,N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide). It's one of the most common formulas, and the most effective. Toxicity is low for humans, and you never know about other formulas they try to make you buy.

If you take a OTC antihistamine (eg. Loratadyna or Cetyryzyna) before getting bitten by mosquitoes you will reduce the symptoms.

Life / BMW Poznan cutomer service is surprisingly good! [8]

Now my question is why can't all organisations on Poland operate this friendly high class service where they actually have a degree of respect for the customer?

BMW sells cars, that are more expensive than most other "normal" cars, mainly because they have a certain image. And the typical BMW-buyer probably is the kind of person who wants to feel a little bit more respected and important than other people.
