Genealogy / Looking for city of Pluslaw Russia [16]

I still claim that Płuchów is the best bet - it's from American paper, not a Russian passport, so it's not Cyrillic script - it's a village near Lwów (Lviv) - Polish land before partitions, Russian later.

Genealogy / Looking for city of Pluslaw Russia [16]

I am convinced that the city name (actually it's a village) is Pluchow as I checked on the Ellis Islands papers and described above.

So for me the case is closed :)
Below evidences: (from the second scan I recognised yet that the Antoni's father name is Jan Grzeszczynski, so the surname is also misspelled).

Gruszczyński is quite popular name in Poland - more than 4600 people have it here, check the map in the link below:

Off-Topic / Thanks a lot for all of your kindness [27]

I think Pakistan is very interesting country with very interesting people. I've heard on radio couple days ago about a Polish traveler who changed his mind about most fascinating country and people he ever visited - it was for Pakistan of course - most beautiful journey of his life.

I can't find any similar place either. Do you have a scan of this Ellis Island transcript? The info on it is probably handwritten, so the name might be slightly different. Or could you provide us the name of your grandfather - we may check the libertyellisfoundation.org site and look for his data ourselves.

Life / Hairdressers prices and salons in Warsaw? [6]

Hest Salon - they claim that they speak English:
youtube.com/watch?v=D3Kq3pnfKNI#t=41
Some opinions:

Once a cult place, frequented by celebrities - today it is a place where time stood still. The decor like communism. Fortunately slowly begins to see the change for better.
You can wait for the barber on comfortable large sofas and read magazines (unfortunately these are often old numbers). In the meantime, a young girl proposing us something to eat / drink.
Salon is clean - almost immediately after cutting hair, they are cleaned. Affordable prices. Hest should start with the passage of time, because despite the passage of years, it still has potential.

Each time I leave happy, Ms. Diana is the mistress of hairdressing

I was there twice and two times I went over the moon! The effect was even better than I expected. It was enough to show the picture, what you want to achieve. The service and professional advice. Mrs. Dorothy explained to me how to care for the hair as it lay, what preparations to use, and what not to do in order not to harm the hair. If you want to have beautiful, perfect curls would definitely recommend Hest!

Life / Where can I give away used clothes in Poland? [10]

There are articles saying that clothes from boxes are giving over mostly to Asia for sale or to places where are recycled into wipers, cleaning clothes - instead to hands of poor Polish people in need.

Better give it directly to Caritas office - currently (up to October 26th) clothes (for adults and children) and foods are collected in Sopot.

Together with Caritas Parish Office at St. Michael the Archangel in Sopot we are arranging the collection of clothing for children and adults. Useful are all the winter stuff - jackets, vests, jackets, pants, gloves, hats, sweaters, etc.. We collect also food.

Things you can bring round the clock to the reception of the Zatoka Sztuki, and to the church Sw. Michala in Sopot (bottom of the salle) between the hours of 16:30 and 17:30.

Check the site, and map where it is:

Life / Best internet for 3G or 4G usb device in Warsaw? [11]

I don't use LTE, but skimmed through the offers. I don't know if you're able to take a 12/24 months contract or not, but check this:

I would consider PLUS or PLAY. I read that PLUS may have better speed, but PLAY has slightly better range. But if you are in Warsaw, range shouldn't be a problem.

Plus (Internet Power formula) have 6 months unlimited internet for free if you decide on 24months contract (even if you reach 25GB limit, but then the speed will drop to up to 10 Mb/s). No data limits at night (12PM-9AM - included). 60 PLN

Play (Formula 4G LTE Unlimited) likewise free 6 months unlimited internet (after you'll reach 30GB limit), then 10PLN monthly extra for that, no data limits at night (1AM-8AM - included), the price is 50 PLN

I would give a slight advantage to Plus, but still this analysis is very far from perfect. Other things may play important role here as well, and maybe someone has own experience in Lte in Warsaw.

Life / Best internet for 3G or 4G usb device in Warsaw? [11]

4g means 4-th generation wireless internet

Thanks gregy for explanation. It seems that I stucked in the past...
In this case PLAY or ORANGE may be the (only?) option. The first one has better range and no data limits in offer.

Oh and yet the Plus mentioned... It has no data limit too.

What kind of device it is? 3G/4G internet means that you're talking about sim card? Bunch of options there - pre-paid or contract, check other threads regarding sim cards (use search field).

Life / Asian / American TV channels in Poland? [4]

There's some possibility with satellite:

For Indian channels look here lyngsat.com/freetv/India.html
For Pakistani check out PakSat: lyngsat.com/Paksat-1R.html
With US channels isn't easy - there are few - scattered among different sattelites. Maybe try alternative: ustvnow.com

..and of course streams over internet.

Bigger dish, better range - buy FTA Kit if you're not interested in Polish channels.

Law / Emailing of direct marketing mailshots in Poland - laws? [3]

Sending spam is not allowed in Poland. Every 'unwanted' information is considered as spam. So the sender needs first permission from recipient before sanding any 'mailshot'

The basic legal act regulating issues related to the transmission of commercial information by electronic post, is the act on electronic services (Dz.U. Nr 144, poz 1204);

10.1. Forbidden is to send unsolicited commercial information addressed to the specified recipient by means of electronic communication, particularly e-mail.
2. Commercial information is considered to be ordered, if the recipient agrees to receive such information, particularly if made available for this purpose, identifying the e-mail address.

Sorry for the google translate ;)

Work / Is it difficult finding a job for Japanese people in Warsaw? Have you seen Japanese people working here? [12]

I don't think it has something to do with your nationality. Everything depends on qualifications and Polish language knowledge. Lot of expats working here, native English speakers, specialists..

Do you think there is any possibilities that some hotel (for example Hilton, Novotel, Mercure etc...) can hire me as a clerk at front desk?

If your Polish is fluent enough and appearance is right then everything is possible, although for the aforementioned places can be yet much higher requirements and a big competition.

Maybe it wouldn't hurt to look over some Japanese companies in your area, and contact them..

Good luck!

UK, Ireland / Polish Female Newborn in UK, what gift is more indicated? [2]

My hint is to buy a good (not "Chinese") teddy, a rattle or maybe a safe colorful rubber toy. For her it would be though rather indifferent since she's just a little babe.

according to polish traditions?

I don't know such a thing for a newborn, the toy is for kid's fun - it don't have to be specially connected with Poland...

Language / Order of words when adding one word? [9]

"Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji dziewiąty Rocznica"

Change it for:
"Wszystkiego najlepszego z okazji dziewiątej miesięcznicy"
Because "dziewiąta rocznica" refers to nine year anniversary!

Language / Order of words when adding one word? [9]

I'm not sure if the word "rocznica" is proper in this case. "Rocznica" is relating to "rok" - year - so for me it should be multiple count of 1 year, not month when using it.

Maybe "jubileusz" would be a better word for this.

Genealogy / Searching for information about Zosia Cytryn and Stanislaw Romuald Hochedlinger [9]

His name was Stanisław Romuald Hochedlinger. A quick google search even without his middle name, and many pages show up.

I see just the following sites which mention this man:

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/18_Pu%C5%82k_Artylerii_Lekkiej

zrodlo.cemesta.com/b11GcScmZ19IfSktSUhjM1MiPSwqfklZZGJpe31mcXxJVHN9e359fg.html

and both are about the same:

Staff of 18 Light Artillery Regiment (I don't know soldier terminology, so translation may slightly differ)
2nd lieutenant Stanisław Romuald Hochedlinger was 1st platoon commander (2nd Squadron)

History / What is the history of the area that surrounds Ponizie - Podlaskie Voivodeship? [2]

What is the history of the area?

As far I know this area was Polish from XVI to XVIII century (until 1795). XIX - XX (up to 1945) hard times for Poland, borders multiply moved, lands changed owners.

Could I actually be Lithuanian or Belarusian or Tatar instead?

Of course, but also none of Pole has 100% Polish blood - looking from the history, migrations - the same applies not only for you ;)
What is your surname by the way? It may be typical for certain countries.

Life / Why is Orange Poland such a crappy / expensive network? [53]

how to change voice language to English on Orange TV.

When watching a channel: click OK on the remote - on the screen you'll see additional informations - choose "język" (language), and then you may change it to English (if available). The next option is "napisy" - subtitles. You can also try to modify it sometimes.
