News / Changing Face in Poland: Skinnhead Puts on a Skullcap [90]

Every year there is a story of a skinhead becoming a Jew. Pirog, mentioned in the article, has no identifiable talent, but now he publicly declared himself gay and Jewish and he is on TV nonstop. Everyone else yawned.

History / just before the war the Polish/Ukrainian szlachta learned Ukrainian [243]

No. You've heard wrong. Krakow will not have a Himmler street either, if that's what you will hear next.

Bandera hated Poles just like many Ukrainians did and they had reasons. Retaliation is what happened.

You mean in the same way Hitler hated Jews and he had reasons, and retaliation is what happened. Of course, on a different scale, but the same principle applies.

History / just before the war the Polish/Ukrainian szlachta learned Ukrainian [243]

Link please.

Link to what? UPA/OUN leadership planned, organized, and carried out an extermination of the Polish population in Wołynia.

Here, ON THIS SITE!!! we're talking about Poland and Polish history, Polish language, Polish people, Poles in general!!

You seem flaky so I'll ignore your stupid comment.

That's ok Nathan. Your new Russian-loving president is going to undo the glorification of UPA and its 'heros.' It is at least comforting to know that the Germans are not glorifying the Einsatzgruppen or Waffen SS. Of course, the Russians are glorifying NKVD, but we don't expect any truth coming out of the east anytime soon.

Ukis, in their search for national heroes among the UPA and OUN butchers are pleased to accept the fact that their national army was called first the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS Galizien (1st Ukrainian), to which they now put up monuments.

History / Were these Polish people communists? [16]

The people you listed are or were anything but sympathetic to communism. It would be interesting where you came across such a ridiculous notion.

Maciej Girtych has come up with some bizzarre statements though and he was on the wrong side in the eighties. Tfu!

Life / Polish Tattoo (considered the eagle) [29]

It is definitely not offensive. The anchor? Letter W as in Walcząca - Fighting.

The eagle doesn't have to be complicated:

News / Poland's Vietnamese: A tough transition but they're surviving [31]

So what is their life like and how do Poles feel about the Vietnames in their midst?

The sizable Vietnamese community in Warsaw has done well. They stay out of the news, make money, and invest in the education of their children.

There is nothing more amusing than a Vitnamese kid telling you a joke, in perfect Polish, about a Polak, Rusek i Niemiec.

It's interesting that crosses in schools do not bother them nor their parents. Maybe that's why they have been welcomed; they don't demand anything but a fair start.

Life / Ripped Off in Poland? - Expose here: [185]

I got to where I would order everything I needed from abroad as I got sick of dealing with Polish retail.

You just didn't quite make it in Poland, but it's nice to see your fascination with our country continues. Living here must have been so foreign to you.

Work / Polish qualifications, what are they worth ? [137]

i think a polish masters degree is only a b.a. in other countries.

You can't get a masters in Poland just by doing class work like in Canada, so what do you mean actually?

USA, Canada / How it works receiving a package from US for all of us who aren't residents [4]

of course my french ID address does not match my hotel where I stay in Poland s adress...

It must be very difficult for you to be in a foreign country. Rest assured that the hotel staff will notify you should a package arrive from...abroad.

I can see though that Beelzebub is on bad terms even with the postman. Some gastarbeiters just don't do well.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

Still, the people who constantly tell them to watch out for an army of antisemites are idiots and deserve to be sacked.

I really see no reason for induced hostility. Manipulating young kids is very, very wrong. In this example the kids have no chance to see for themselves that they don't need escorts, armed guards, and hateful propaganda. Sad, to say the least. But, you're right, the director did pick some of the dumber girls to portray in their induced psychosis. What is unexusable is the behavior of the adults.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

Just when I thought I had the peace of mind about the Polish-Jewish relations, and I felt things were taking on better and more relaxed view of each other, I watched a recent Isreali documentary that really brought me down. We've had discussions on this forum about Jewish youths visiting Poland and I was optimistict that they would understand the wartime realities, and given the proper background lecture I think they would understand and would be much wiser for it. Perhaps I had thought wrong. I have always thought that it was only the American kids that were brainwashed to believe that the Poles were as bad as the Nazis, but this seems to be untrue; the Istraeli kids are continued to be indoctrinataed to believe that we Poles are monsters out to kill them if we only get a chance. Thanks to the brave and armed Istraeli guards, we can't fullfill our fantasy. If you think I am full of it, watch this Israeli documentary and get back to me; I will be happy to discuss the relevant pieces of this film.

Life / Do Polish People steal a lot? [330]

Actually 1jola I know we were arguing last night but this is a pretty inane topic. Yes some Polish people steal a lot.

I don't remember that we actually argued. There were some misunderstandings though. As to stealing, you better believe it, whatever the master thief Goering, Frank and all the lesser looters left behind was systematically stolen, and if not shipped east, was tucked away in all kinds of thieving ways. This continued till 1989, and then the cycle continued much to the detriment of this nation. No thieves were ever caught. So yes, some Poles are thieves and some steal a lot. I don't want to hog the discussion, so it can return to Poles stealing cinder blocks. I have to go now, do my patriotic duty, and dip my white ass in the Red Sea. :)

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

But no matter how logical the reasons, the result was that Jews felt unwanted by Poland.

Well, if they wouldn't have been good at everything they touched, and would have been schmucks who just schlept around aimlessly, there would have been no problem. They were too successful. You just can't win. You become a doctor, bad luck, you don't, bad luck too. I lived most of my life in other countries, yet I came back home and I love the absolute mess we have.

BTW, is Yiddish still used for any reason?. Perhaps literature, music?

I understand what you are saying and it is good to have some insight from your perspective. We have an impression that Russians don't like us. When I travelled in Russia, and I went as far as Baikal, I found friendly folks everywhere. Some told me that their press is doing a good job in trying to ruin that mutual friendliness. Some will fall for that but the ones I met didn't. I think this is similar. I think the Museum of the History of Polish Jews that will be built in Warsaw will be really interesting and will have a good effect on relations. It will open a lot of eyes, some of our first coins have Hebrew symbols on them, no one knows that.

History / Polish hatred towards Jews... [1290]

You're ignoring too much history. Look at this link and tell me which part isn't true:

I looked at the link. It starts out like this:

it cannot be forgotten that interwar Poland had a very sorry record in terms of its treatment of its own Jewish minority.

...and then it lists limitations placed on Jewish businesses, lawyers, doctors, all "proving " officially sanctioned anti-Semitism. It gives serious references so we are comforted that it isn't a piece of propaganda. It is, however. No reasons for any of these actions are given except for... you guessed it, anti-Semitism, or dislike or even hatred of Jews. I have not checked these facts but I have a suspission they are not exactly correct.

There were more Jews in Poland than in any other country in the world except in the U.S. This was the waiting hall as the Jews waited to go home. If we accept this as being true, then we must also accept that they did not feel the same attachment to this land as the Poles. They were not farmers so the belonging is even more understandable. Allow me to make some generalizations here, or at least the same level as the Jews so often make about Poland. It isn't meant to antagonize you or anybody else. Citizens or minorities who don't feel attachment to the country they live in don't make the best citizens. Full assimilation would have elevated any problems arrising but we understand that was impossible because our religions differ and you couldn't expect the Jews to become Christians and give up their beliefs. Not to say they were bad citizens, very productive in fact, but our cultures differed and the more influence they had on our culture, they were perceived as a threat to our culture and the nationalist and Christian character of Poland. One doesn't have to a Marxist to understand that economics influence culture. As certain professions and sectors of industry became unproportionally staffed with Jewish workers and owners, the government enacted protectionist measures. We do not call tarifs and import taxes racist so we also shouldn't call these measures anti-Semitic either. Tests in Polish are viewed as anti-Semitic, but a question should be asked why weren't they speaking Polish but only Yiddish. In today's Israel can I take a profession cerfication test in Arabic or Armenian?

Warsaw had a larger population of Jews than whole of England, and 32% of lawyers and 66% of doctors were Jewish(well respected, you can be sure of that). In other parts of Poland this was even more pronounced.

From your link:

In May 1937, the membership of the Polish Medical Association adopted a paragraph into their professional charter excluding Jews from the medical profession.

This appears to mean that Jews had to seize practicing medicine, but I find that hard to believe. When you read that, what is your interpretation?

So the problem with the article you referenced is not what says, but it fails to address to get a fuller picture.

After 1935, Polish antisemitic political parties put increasing pressure on the government to pass legislation that would place restrictions on the social mobility of Polish Jews. These parties had been inspired by the example that the Nazis set in Germany with the passage of the Nuremberg Race Laws.

There was one openly anti-Semitic party then and had very small membership and was in fact outlawed by the government.

Life / Lack of Spacial Acuity in Poland [69]

People actively home in on me

Good one. Perhaps you are cute as a button.

We Poles are all slightly cross-eyed due to the high intake of booze. This could explain the problem you are having with us and I suggest inebriating yourselves more often. The problem will not be so accute then.

so true, though it would be interesting to compare Poland with China.

Having been to China several times, I must say they are not as goofy as we are when it comes to crowds. Maybe because they are more agile.

Life / Do you think a smoking ban would be a good thing in Polish restaurants and Bars? [217]

Having lived in Poland for five years , i have begun to understand the Polish mentality , and i am pretty certain that telling Poles they can,t have a ciggie with their beer is just not going to work...

Musi to na Rusi, a w Polsce jak kto chce. The saying goes.

(Must is in Russia, but in Poland as you like).
