History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

Why ?

Probably something to do with it being the name of the place they live.

It was Hellenic in the past but today nothing left.

Slavs adopted the Greek origin word Macedonia for their country. Good for Greeks.

Greeks may say proto-macedonians were Greek. It is possibly true. But today's macedonians are mostly slavs.

Spot on. Most people are happy when a name from their language is given new life.

Identities are inherited.

No they aren't. People's identities are much more complicated than just DNA.

You are right though that names can be adopted and Macedonia has adopted that name for their country.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

Don't be silly, Zimmy.

The constitution, legal code or common law of a country specifies the hierarchy of courts. That's why my country doesnt allow Christians to keep slaves and your country doesn't allow traditional native American punishments.

Tell me more as I'm so sick of people crying over this one.

A residents's association on an estate didn't bother with a tree due to lack of interest but they'd had an Eid party a few months previously. A local right-wing activist seized on it and rang the papers. It was a hot topic in the Danish tabloids for all of a day while everyone else in the town were perplexed as there was a huge Christmas tree right in the town square.

It was actually a small housing estate where they didn't bother to buy one; the town of had its decorations in the city centre as normal, but don't let facts get in the way of hysteria.

Genealogy / Is Poland Germanic or Slavic? [58]

Germanic

Yes. Even Iceland and most of Ireland are linguistically Germanic. Not to mention the US (including most Pol-Ams here), Australia and New Zealand. But that's just language.

Eastern Germans call themselves Slavic? Since when?

They don't, however many have surnames which suggest the Slavic world and the place-name Berlin suggests there were once Slavic residents. Doesn't make them Slavic though, any more than it makes a Yorkshireman a Viking.

Come to Birmingham, Alum Rock, have walk here and see how friendly local muslims are here :-

Don't assume the mostly Pakistani immigrants you meet in your area behave the same way as other people who are Muslim, from, say Lebanon or Indonesia. A whole lot of factors make people how they are. A Christian from Poland doesn't necessarily behave the same way or hold the same values as a Christian from Uganda.

Law / Value ( € or PLN) of handmade painting on clothes [10]

A friend of mine was painting teeshirts like that and another one was selling them. I think he got about 20 or 25zl for them but found them very hard to sell. This was about 10 years ago though. I suspect everything depends on where you sell them.

I know but if Eastern Germans can call themselves Slavic

that means Western Poles can call themselves German.

Only if they actually are. Do people in Detroit call themselves Canadians?

You are very smart, theguythatstart. You ask if Gorzów Wielkopolski is in Silesia, but you know perfectly well that it is not in Wielkopolska!!!

Yes. Something doesn't ring true.

Western Poland in general also has a relatively high frequency of the R1b haplogroup which can suggest additional Celtic/Germanic ancestry.

That doesn't make someone German or mean they 'have German in them'.

I suspect most people would be a bit surprised if they did a DNA test.

News / Poland's economic future? [294]

Not that roads funded by the EU are any sort of indicator about Poland's economic future. The existing infrastructure is enough to get exports out and those roads that have been built (it should be said, behind schedule) will be more useful to exporters to and from the Baltics and Belarus. And rises in oil prices will make them wish they hadn't run down the rail freight system quite so badly.

One thing that does look bright for Poland is the prognosis of future food shortage - as a mostly agricultural country a rise in food prices is likely to be a benefit.

Few Germans remained after the war. Very few.

In the entire voivodstwo (which borders Germany) there were only 500 Germans in the last 2011 census, and that includes people who moved after EU entry.

A bigger question is why someone from Gorzow would be asking people on an English language forum if they think he's part German.

No. A highway is not the same as a motorway, nor are there many motorways in PL.

Only you can answer that. What's with the one line questions that you know the answer to already.

Instead of Gorzow, perhaps you're from Trollhagen.

There's Wymysorys which robably evolved among Dutch and Scotttish settlers. It was only ever spoken by a few people and is now all but extinct.

Why are you asking?

These roads are not highways . Highways in Poland are not toll free.

That's playing with the definition to try and excuse your lying.

Most people here speak English as their first language. We know what a highway is.

Life / Cost of Living in Lodz [50]

Fee for company flat is 300PLN. Which is not bad, as it can give some flexibility and keep expenses low -- which means monthly income without rent/bills burden

It's good.

reaching 30

It's also good.

1/4 is barely enough to mention.

Quite. And in any case it doesn't make any sense to say that a language is 1/4 something.

Indeed, Lubuskie, though historically Wielkopolska as the name suggests.

But definitely not Silesia. And very few Germans there.

If you knew, why did you ask?
