Work / Internship programs in Warsaw? Informatics, Computer Engineering [14]

I sent maybe 15 CV to companies but ı wanna send more :S

You shouldn't expect a reply if you don't speak Polish. There's a population spike of young people in Poland, many of whom have a reasonable college education and chasing work experience. And of course they do speak the language.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

ancient

ancient

hereditary

Then was then and now is now.

They name airports, arenas, stadiums, streets, and boulevards after them

Poles and Germans feel the same way about Copernicus. Same with King Cnut and Britain/Denmark. Nobody really minds, except perhaps for some teenagers whose energy would perhaps be better expended elsewhere.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

originated

778-808 BC

3 Millenniums ago!

There you go again. Ancient history is no basis for the present.

FYRoM alienated a whole nation of Hellenes and their global Greek diasporas

Nobody cares much about that, do they. A nation that can't pay its bills doesn't have much of a voice.

Travel / Visiting Warsaw In April - museums / galleries? [14]

I noticed they'd spoilt it a bit. The view is still there from some of the side tables though they are often reserved. The upper level is probably the best bet.

Travel / Visiting Warsaw In April - museums / galleries? [14]

Isn't it closed at the moment?

They should be open again by April as far as I know. A journey there wouldn't be wasted since pretty well all tourists would be in the Rynek at some point.

You can walk up the tower of St Anne's church to have a view of the Old Town and other parts of the capital..

Pleasant enough, but unexceptional. The view from the Palace of Culture is a must see - though the Technical Museum downstairs is only really for those interested in such things. The building itself is worth visiting anyway. The view from the Panorama Bar on the 40th floor of the Marriott is even better.

Correction. It might be open by then, however during the renovation, the Museum's collection is on display in the Palace of Culture. Another reason for visiting.

Though a bit far-off if you don't have a car...

If you get the right bus, from Wilanow, it's not too bad. Best from June though or for the Flora Musicalia concerts on Sundays in summer.

The museum is good for 45 minutes max...and then...? Though the park is really nice

I was thinking of the gardens really. And there's a nice restaurant nearby.

The good:
Go to the Royal Castle (still free I think on Sunday), the Uprising Museum, the new Jewish Museum and the Copernicus Science Museum (if you don't mind loads of kids). The National Gallery (the only decent part of the National Museum) is good, as is the Zacheta if you like modern art. The Warsaw Historical Society have a museum in the Rynek Starego Miasto (the big square in the touristy bit) that people overlook and is worth a visit. The Botanical Gardens near Powsinek are worth a visit - google or get a guide book for directions and Chopin's birthplace at Zelazowa Wola is a bit of a trek out of town (allow a day if you want to go trhere) but is excellent.

The bad:
Avoid the JPII art museum in plac Bankowy. Also avoid the Museum of the Polish Army unless you like that sort of thing (but have a look in the grounds - they're free, and there's a sputnik!). Marie Curie's birthplace is only really interesting if you particularly want to see it. Wilanow Palace is nothing special despite what some people may say, though the gardens are nice - some good restaurants nearby too. The Centre for Contemporary Art at Ujazdowski Castle is nothing special either.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

The Macedonian Name belongs in the Greek Domain where it originated.

It belongs to whoever uses it

FYRoM is no longer given the time of day on the issue of the Name dispute between FYRoM and Greece.

Most of the world uses the name Macedonia rather than FYROM.

They can if they want. - there's certainly nothing to stop them. The only issue is whether or not their country is called Macedonia - and it is. That's recognised by Poland, by the way.

History / Alexander the Great - Macedonski. Poland connection? [254]

That doesn't really make sense. Some 'ancient legacy' certainly isn't relevant to anything today. If it was, Italy would have a claim on half of Europe, the Persians would have a claim on most of the Middle East (including Modern Greece) and the Mongolians would have a claim on half of Europe and Asia.

Are modern Turks the sole and legal modern-representaives of the Ottoman Empire - YES or NO!

Did Ancient Greece survive until 1918? Yes or No?

And by the way, Turkey is not a legal (and certainly not a sole) representative of the Ottoman Empire, which covered a huge area including Modern Greece. Do you consider

modern Turks the sole and legal modern-representaivse

of Greece?

All content is original - repeated, ammended, updated and repeated again.

You mean you post this rubbish all round the internet? That does come across as rather obsessive.

The Hebrews are not the ancient-Hebrews and the Chinese are not the ancient-Chinese

No, they aren't. And the Modern Greeks are not the heirs of the Ancient Greeks in anything really, except a reconstructed language. Too much has happened since their culture was lost and their society degraded. They certainly can't credibly claim a linguistic link as an excuse for interfering with the name of another country.

The most recent post...the one above your one made it's debut here,

So one in a thread is original? And the rest copied from other people??

Alexander the Great: Greek or South-Slav ?

It's an irrelevance - the Greeks of today are not the Greeks of the ancient world, the Slavs are not the ancient Slavs and the names of states in Europe reflect more than just the ancient world.

Law / Value ( € or PLN) of handmade painting on clothes [10]

50zl - 80z

People can buy a designer tee-shirt for that in TK Maxx. You'll find in PL that people are very careful with their money when they buy clothes.

I have seen a pair of converse hand painted by Ronnie Wood (Rolling Stones) and they were on sale for £2500!

If it was by Fred Wood from the pub round the corner they might fetch a fiver - only a collector would be interested in something expensive hand-painted by an ageing singer.

The big thing is, the more you spam like that, the less convinced people are. Most people can make their own minds up and are happy to call Macedonia by its name - Macedonia.

Food / Polish equivalent of Parmesan cheese? [6]

And where can I possibly get them?

A lot of places sell a cheese called Dziugas, from Lithuania. It's very similar and a lot cheaper. Carrefour certainly have it, as well as some better quality small shops. It's worth trying.

Law / Preferred online store for purchasing Electronics Item in Poland [22]

RTV

They have some good dtuff in store, but I'd never though to look at their website. Media Saturn has useless customer service for their online deliveries. The last thing I bought online (as it happens something electrical - a steam cleaner) I got from Amazon.co.uk - it was cheaper than Saturn and unlike them, delivery was free.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

The Judeo/Christian phrase started to be used when European colonialism was cranking into gear.

Spot on.

Using the phrase is an attempt to define a continent by religion - whereas religion is a part of culture rather than culture being a part of religion.

it was first used in this sense in 1877.
According to Wikipedia article this term is used since the 1950s.
Yes, recent.

I'm not letting go until you answer

It seems you will be disappointed.

News / Don't let Poland become like my country, France. [630]

If it was ever a valid description in the first place and if people's understanding of that concept had remained unchanged. I'm familiar with Nietsche's writings - on that as with so much else he needs to be understood within the context of his time and place - as do we.

And Europe as well as our planet is shrinking - terms like 'Judeo-Christian don't have the same relevance as they once did, nor will the current fuss about migration be seen the same way as the future. And yes, if you do want to talk about 'Judeo-Christian' in the context immigration by Muslims, you do have to look at the the similarities between all three Abrahamic religions and the way they shaped the societies they came in contact with.

The problem Szczecinian, is that the terminology is subjective (and in the opinion of several posters, faulty to say the least) and in any case it assumes too much to define our continent by a religious current, not least by one which fades faster and faster every century.

Anyway, definitely bedtime.

No Paulina, you're just trying to argue about things discussed already today. What part of that don't you understand?

Why can't you just answer one simple question?

Because I think we can both see from the thread that your 'question' is far from simple.

Anyway, I've stayed up too long - work in the morning. Perhaps you can find someone in the chat box to argue with.

Love / Loving someone from Poland (same gender) but from a faraway land [8]

Yes, that's very sound advice from Maybe.

Remember, you haven't met the guy. He may fulfil or exceed your expectations from your online contact, but there's an equal chance that he doesn't. You should prepare yourself psychologically for that and remember that something that seems really important at the time (especially when you're young) doesn't seem so important with hindsight.

Go with an open mind, hope for the best but expect the worst. Remember you're attracted to your idea of him - especially since you've never met. There may well be someone else just round the corner who fits that idea too.

And you keep not answering my questions,

Because, Paulina, this isn't a question and answer session. Why not have a closer look at the thread. And yes, some of the answers to your 'questions' are now in Random.
