Work / Living in Katowice (programmer, 3000 PLN) - is it enough? [65]

I was asking about Sweden, not Poland. I was referring to "highly skilled jobs are scarce as I have applied many times there." I thought that you're talking about something technical, but you studied Massmedia and Communication.

The job interviewer also told me that I would have to move to call centers in India if the need arises.
India is as most people know, one of the world's cheapest countries with highly skilled labour.

If one can keep his European salary there, then temporary assignment to India could be a great adventure in my opinion.

Work / Possibilities of working in Warsaw for an Industrial design engineer? [2]

pl.jobrapido.com/?w=3d&fh=1
pracuj.pl/praca/3d;kw
gumtree.pl/fp-oferty-pracy/3d/c8?isSearchForm=true

You can contact some foreign companies directly too. Don't expect that it will be easy to find a job here without knowledge of Polish language. There are many graduates who are ready to do design work for minimum salary.

Life / Quality of life in major cities in Poland - cost, culture, work and modernization [11]

How is the weather in these cities btw? Does it differ noticeably?

No. Here you have map of sun in Poland: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b4/SolarGIS-Sola r-map-Poland-pl.png But differences are very small. More obvious, when you look at map of Europe: pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Insolacja#mediaviewer/Plik:SolarGIS -Solar-map-Europe-en.png

Differences between northern vs southern countries is much more obvious than between northern and southern Poland

Wow, I didn't know that :O now that I read about it a little on the internet, it seems that all big 3 are kinda notorious for their polluted air (although Kraków is still far worse than the other two) - makes sense I'd say, but it sure sucks nonetheless :P

Yes. surprisingly big capital has less pollution than smaller Wrocław. When you care about health, perhaps you will consider Gdańsk too :) It's not bad for IT jobs and has the clearest air:

Here in comparison to few European cities:

It reflects what I've heard that Warsaw is the best for jobs, then Wrocław and 3rd Kraków. ( Although this little old report shows higher earnings in Kraków -

The newest report confirms that Wrocław has a little bit higher average than Kraków:

Life / Quality of life in major cities in Poland - cost, culture, work and modernization [11]

By the way, it also seems like Gliwice is a kind of high-tech hotbed

No, it's just too small statistical sample to be very reliable. When you look at the biggest job portal: pracuj.pl/praca/programista:

dolnośląskie (175)
kujawsko-pomorskie (43)
lubelskie (57)
lubuskie (16)
łódzkie (104)
małopolskie (120)
mazowieckie (385)
opolskie (21)
podkarpackie (26)
podlaskie (23)
pomorskie (79)
śląskie (104)
świętokrzyskie (16)
warmińsko-mazurskie (9)
wielkopolskie (93)
zachodniopomorskie (29)

Then mazowieckie with Warsaw is 1st, then dolnośląskie with Wrocław 2nd. małopolskie with Kraków 3rd. 4th is śląskie with Gliwice - the part of Katowice metropolitan area. Quite bad ratio, considering, that it's around 3mln people (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katowice_urban_area )

It reflects what I've heard that Warsaw is the best for jobs, then Wrocław and 3rd Kraków. ( Although this little old report shows higher earnings in Kraków -

When comparing these cities look at outdoor activities too. Kraków is close too high rocky mountains, Wrocław is not far away from mountains, but they're not rocky there. Warsaw is away from any sea or mountains. In summer people go from Warsaw to Mazurian lakes. (if you like mosquitos). From Wrocław you can go for a weekend to Prague (5h with a cheap bus). From Kraków it's 7h to Vienna with not so cheap train. Warsaw has 5:30 with not so cheap train to Berlin, 3h cheap train to Kraków and if they finish renovation of rail line in 2016 - 3h expensive train to Baltic Sea:

I was curious how it looks in other job portals. So here is popular free one: gumtree.pl/fp-programisci-informatyka-i-internet/c9005

Mazowieckie (208)
Małopolskie (141)
Dolnośląskie (113)
Wielkopolskie (78)
£ódzkie (34)
Śląskie (21)
Kujawsko - pomorskie (10)
Lubelskie (8)
Podlaskie (6)
Opolskie (4)
Pomorskie (4)
Zachodniopomorskie (4)
Podkarpackie (3)
Świętokrzyskie (3)
Warmińsko-mazurskie (3)

Here Kraków has more adds than Wrocław. Śląskie is even worse than in previous website.

1 more thought. You entitled this topic "Quality of life", so it's important to add that Kraków has one of the highest air pollution in Europe during winter.

Life / Quality of life in major cities in Poland - cost, culture, work and modernization [11]

look at numbeo.com to see prices. Basically only rent prices and perhaps commuting will differ between these cities. As for number of IT companies just look at any job portal. For example here is number of offers in a website for programmers:

Warszawa (98)Krakow (45)Wrocław (40)Gliwice (31)Poznań (29)Berlin (12)£odź (11)Katowice (9)Ostrow (5)Wielkopolski (5)Dusseldorf (4)Kielce (4)Lublin (4)Opole (4)Rzeszow (4)Bydgoszcz (3)

4programmers.net/Praca

These 3 first cities have similar number of job offers per inhabitant. Meaning Warszawa has the most because it is the biggest.

Weather it's worth to live in Warsaw instead of Wrocław or Kraków depends on how big apartment you need. When you rent something smaller, then difference in prices is only small percentage of your income - lower than difference in pay between Warsaw and Wrocław/Kraków. When you need something bigger, then all what you will gain from earning more in Warsaw can be just enough to cover higher rent. When you like old styled cities then Wrocław or Kraków, when more modern then Warsaw. In Warsaw you are more likely to meet other foreigners. It's important if you don't speak Polish.

Work / Teaching at a Polish University - PHD required? or being a foreigner enough ;) [45]

Problem is that they don't employ new people at all. It's the time of demographic low and private schools are being closed and some specialties in public universities too. Theoretically one can work with Master only, but for minimum salary as assistant only. Foreign diplomas (master and PhD) are treated worse. If from out of EU, then could even be not recognized. Except perhaps if you're already full professor.

Work / Job offer from IT Giant in Katowice, Poland (UNIX specialist). Information on tax and rental costs needed. [65]

So, whats ur say here...?
Is it really worth it.? or not ..?

They're from the west so they spend more. It's easy to spend as much as you earn, doesn't matter how much it is. It's easy to adjust your spending (increase) to higher salary, but not so easy other direction. That's why Poles can easily rise family of 4 with 5000 PLN net per month and expats from western countries cannot. Also it's uncommon to rent houses in Poland. Usually people cannot afford to do that and they rent flats or posses house either inherited or bought with savings from abroad or/and mortgage.

Work / Job offer from IT Giant in Katowice, Poland (UNIX specialist). Information on tax and rental costs needed. [65]

Now I see why people ask about IBM jobs in Katowice. They mentioned in press that IBM is coming to Katowice. IBM got around 13mln zł welcome gift from the government. Not so expensive IMHO, if they employe promised 2000 workers. Then it's just 6500zł per person.

IBM INVESTED IN KATOWICE
The new center, which is expected to generate up to 2,000 new jobs, will join IBM's strategic network of IBM delivery centers providing a wide range of IT services, including server operating systems management, security and safety systems, services for end-customers, including maintenance and monitoring of IT hardware and software systems.
Implementation of operating activities of the center is planned for August 2013.

invest.katowice.eu

Moreover IBM, together with HP was involved in the biggest corruption scandal in Polish IT, so perhaps decision makers hope to get this money back in bribes.

Law / Taxation system in Poland? My company is cutting 38%!? [25]

Use calculator:
sedlak.pl/Kalkulator_wynagrodzen.html

Just type there gross salary and in next view you will see your NET monthly salary in: Umowa o pracę > Koszty pracownika > Netto (column).

Examples:
1680zł gross = 1237zł net
4000zł gross = 2854zł net
8000zł gross = 5640zł net
15000zł gross = 10518zł net

So as you see net salary is between 74% of gross down to 70% gross in case of high earnings. (That's not so bad, because in Germany it's around 60%)

The difference is:

Health insurance
Sick insurance (worker get payed when sick)
Disability insurance
Retirement Insurance
Advance payment of income tax

Foreigner must pay that money, cannot get them back when leaving Poland. Without permanent permit to stay foreigner could take advantage of health and accident insurance, but contributions for retirement found will be wasted except if foreigner decides to retire in European Union.

In some cases foreigner has to pay extra tax at home. That depends on agreements between countries. You're lucky because there is favorable agreement between India and Poland

przepisy.gofin.pl/przepisy,4,15,121,99,,,umowa-miedzy-rzadem-polskiej.html

It says in article 16th that earning of Indian worker in Poland can be taxed in Poland only:

will i have to pay ZUS over this 18% or is that something that my employer will pay and will not be deducted from my salary.

Your employer will be contributing to your insurances too. But that's his extra cost. It's around 20% of gross salary in Poland. It means, that when you get employed for average salary 4000zł gross, it will cost your boss 4824zł. Employer would get only 2853zł of that. That means that total taxation of work in Poland is around 41%. It's possible to lower amount of taxes payed, by working as a contractor:

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umowa_%C5%9Bmieciowa

But that's usually not available for foreigners, because employment status is usually needed in order to get visa.
