Travel / LOT Polish Airlines - Baggage Change / Liquid Restrictions! [5]

The rules on LOT are the same as on any airlines. Of you want to bring liquids in your hand baggage they have to be in tiny bottles. Personally I always put any liquids in checked luggage to avoid complication. Foodstuffs are best in checked luggage too, but don't need to be.

UK, Ireland / Do Poles and EU Citizens exploit the British welfare state [129]

That doesn't reflect reality - you can't trust official statistics here and access to (and quality of) education is something cited as very positive by migrants to the UK.

In PL, school textbooks have to be bought by the parents.

There's also genuinely free healthcare and a social safety net that makes the UK attractive to people from other regions in the union.

UK, Ireland / Do Poles and EU Citizens exploit the British welfare state [129]

they are the most fertile national group in the UK

This is partly because of the poor condition of the welfare state in PL as well as support for families and the poor schooling. The UK is a relatively easy place to live.

Travel / Poland is unsafe for visiting British Citizens ! - so I've been told ... [18]

szenk88uk:The only time that I have ever seen a Pole look at a British person with disdain is when you have a group of gobby British guys on a stag do in Krakow or somewhere similar. In that instance I shared the look of disdain!

Quite a few times, I've seen and heard some fairly inhospitable comments made to visitors wearing unconventional clothes or with dark skin. Also to Brits who aren't tourists, visitors or guests in the country, but live there.

Personally, living for many years in Warsaw, I've never seen anything unacceptable from either stag parties from abroad or Warsaw locals - just people enjoying themselves but I've seen plenty of unsavoury behaviour from out of towners from the villages.

News / Poland one step closer to visa waiver by US Senate [59]

So what do you think- how quicly they will give me visa?

A few decades maybe. I suppose they have to balance turning down a high risk young person who wants a holiday or allowing in a high risk young person who will become an illegal immigrant.

Do you think there are not ppl like that?

Many, and as I said earlier in the thread, I'm affected by this myself. Thousands of people round the world want to enter countries they don't have access to.

But can you think of another way they should do it? Perhaps not, since:

I couldn't care less.

News / Poland one step closer to visa waiver by US Senate [59]

I admit that many ppl that do get rejected would overstay but I can bet that as many are rejected even though they never wanted to stay in the USA.

Doubtless

Not one of you find it weird that the actual number of overstayed visas is not included in any way?

It's included. They removed Argentina for this reason:

(iii) Report and publication The Secretary of Homeland Security shall on the same date submit to Congress and publish in the Federal Register information relating to the maximum visa overstay rate established under clause (i). Not later than 60 days after such date, the Secretary shall issue a final maximum visa overstay rate above which a country may not participate in the program.

law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/8/1187

Though a low visa refusal is a the main criteria for a stable country to join, they do still have a maximum visa overstay rate.

News / Poland one step closer to visa waiver by US Senate [59]

If the system is so great why there are still ppl that get into USA AND overstay it?

You'd prefer that they're stricter and don't issue visas to people from Poland? They're very strict with people from some countries.

I don't care

I couldn't care less

Nobody's twisting your arm. Evidently many could care less though since there's a petition and congressional lobbying to add Poland to the scheme.

Harder than the data about how many ppl actualy overtay?

I suspect you misread the sentence and in fact we're saying the same thing. What data do you imagine they would use bar the details of people who overstay? They know who doesn't leave the country on time and they know what those people put in their visa applications - certainly enough to make a reliable profile of overstayers.

I just think it's a stupid system.

They manage their visa and immigration policies with a lot of careful thought. They certainly don't just pull regulations out of their asses to indulge the inferiority complexes of people from countries excluded from the waiver programme.

History / Poles slaughtered during World War 2 by partisans in Koniuchy [10]

revolutionary supplies

Food.

when it does the lies start flying

A friend was there at the time. Not while it was happening but so soon after that the bodies were still there. It affected him so much that he still gets very emotional about what he saw even now in his tenth decade.

It's easy to talk about these things with the luxury of distance but sad to make a trolling post about 'commies' when the incidents took place during the worst period of history in which to live and in one of the worst places. Sadly it was a time of massacres - Baba Yar, Jedwabne, the Death Camps built in Poland etc. The perpetrators were usually not 'commies' and the nationality of the villagers is an irrelevance now - any of us can behave inhumanly to others regardless of who we are.

Like in the UK, they too have problems with illegals from Poland.

There are no "illegals from Poland" in the UK - both countries are part of the EU and citizens of either country have a right to live in either or both.

perhaps the rational is that they can't afford to give out visa waivers for citizens of countries whose people do not honour the visa expiry

That's one of the criteria that hasn't yet been met.

Personally, I'm torn. Visa requirement is keeping at least 3 relatives away from my front door

That's a shame. I'm in a similar situation myself. It's the people who overstay because they want to work that spoil things for genuine visitors. Perhaps it would be possible to fix a visa?

History / Is Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Tepes seen as a hero in Poland? [25]

Dracula don`t live on Balkan. Its stereotype, forced by some mass media

Certainly plenty of blood spilled there during the C20.

Though the origin of vampire legends (nothing to do with Vlad the Impaler) seems blindingly obvious.

History / Is Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Tepes seen as a hero in Poland? [25]

Three good people there, two chosen by fair elections and served their terms of office, the other very highly respected and all three very good at standing up to the very worst sort of Balkan leader.

Mass killings in that part of the world have sadly continued long after Vlad the Impaler's day. Now fortunately it's a lot sooner before people hear about such crimes; the international community can respond more quickly and effectively and forensic pathology means that the mass graves of the victims tell their story too.

Real Estate / Rental market in Warsaw, are prices increasing or decreasing? (2 room apartment) [10]

A month's rent, most of them. And there's always a deposit.

It's usually better to deal direct with the owner if you can. I can recommend Gumtree though - best to check it regularly as the best (or most unusual, like a 4 bedroom flat) tend to go quickly.

Watch out though for people who advertise 4 bedrooms but in fact mean 3 bedrooms and a bed in the living room - unless that's what you want.

Gumtree Warszawa is your best bet. Don't forget to check the box to say that you're looking for ads placed by the owner rather than by agents (although some agents pretend).

5 room flats are rare though - 4 room ones are more common.

easy to get to ursynow by public transport in less than 45 minutes is ok

That's anywhere near the metro really.

At least nobody can`t complaint that Venetian got turban nailed and that Turk got hat nailed to his head.

They can certainly complain about it. Plus the thousands who got impaled on that monster's orders.

Law / Information on which documents are needed to obtain a visa for a visit to Poland (non EU citizen ) [18]

There isn't a consulate in Bangladesh - the New Delhi consulate deals with visas for Bangladesh residents: newdelhi.msz.gov.pl/pl/

You'll need to make an appointment here: secure.e-konsulat.gov.pl/

A letter of invitation usually contains an address, the duration of the stay and a promise that you will look after the person financially during their visit however you should check this with the consulate.

History / Is Vlad the Impaler or Vlad Tepes seen as a hero in Poland? [25]

does that mean the Russian tales/pamphlets influenced Poland's views on Vlad the most?I've always thought that maybe the German tales

Neither. He isn't a big figure in PL. There's a local baddie, the Devil of £ańcut, however even he is hardly an everyday topic of conversation.
