Life / Legalising Marijuana in Poland. Therapy available? [76]

If that's to be believed (and it isn't from a neutral or objective source) it sounds pretty much the same as alcohol, though in reality alcohol is far more damaging to the individual and society. Perhaps we should legalise marijuana and ban booze.

Also, if it was regulated then buyers would know exactly what they were smoking instead of buying something that may be laced with 'hidden extras'

Spot on. Legal prohibition (if there's significant public demand for something) never works. The farce in the the US when they banned alcohol is a good example. Legal suppliers couldn't do business so less desirable people filled the void.

Love / Should I ask a slightly older Polish Woman out on a date? [5]

Exactly. Good advice from both Magdalena and Harry.

In the scheme of things, the age difference is tiny. And don't worry about living at home or being on an internship; both are more normal in PL than GB.

Food / Polish wine produced in the Zielona Góra region [41]

Every Jewish person and those with knowledge of Jewish tradition are mocking you now Jon, Jews only drink Kosher drinks on Passover. Enough already

That's precisely what I said. Are you suggesting I said they don't?

I really think you try to argue to much then try to cover up losing the argument by lying.

To repeat, the kosher wine market was huge in pre-1939 Poland. After that there was less demand for obvious and sad reasons.

Classifieds / Warsaw (PL) Tabletop Role Playing Game Group for Expats Only. D&D Fortnightly [87]

For as much as I know and remember, these RPGs can be great fun and a good way to meet people; the same with war games. Myself, I play bridge and enjoy it.

But the dressing up does sound intriguing as does the nudity with wizards. Can mine be Daniel Radcliffe? Ian McKellan can be someone else's.

Real Estate / Buying a property in Poland to rent out from the UK [82]

Do private sellers negotiate on price there? If so, by how much on average (%)?

Expect the asking price that they've advertised, whether agent or private, to be ridiculously inflated - up to 25%. If when you start to negotiate they start speaking English to you, switch back to Polish and if they start trying to patiently explain market conditions, walk out. If they start trying to explain market conditions in English, slam the door as you go - let them sell it to Pan Wojtek instead.

as for kosher wine and Kosher vodka post WW2 it would have been marketing only.

The bottom fell out of the market somewhat after September 1939 and sadly never recovered. Before then, kosher wine was hugely important, especially around Passover.

You may recall if you happen to have been in Poland in the early nineties the shops had many versions of vodka marketed as Kosher vodka which did not follow the kosher

Like the Jewish-style pork that Pod Samsonem used to back in the same period. Tasty, but not the real thing. Vodka however, unlike wine, is not essential for Passover.

Real Estate / Buying a property in Poland to rent out from the UK [82]

The cheapest flats in Warsaw start at around 150k however they tend to be in bad areas and the rental income would be small and the type of tenant riskier.

I'm thinking of buying something only a little better than that myself, but then again, I live here, speak the language, don't need a letting agent and can keep track of any problems myself as well as spending a bit of time to find the right tenant.

Absolutely daft to buy an apartment to rent out if you don't know the country and spend time here. First you'd need an 'English speaking' estate agent (would you really trust one) who'd charge for being there in case there are problems, secondly you'd have no real control over what goes on (good luck suing someone if your flat is trashed), thirdly you'd create a tax liability here and fourthly rental prices are very low so it wouldn't be a great investment.

Have you spent much time here in PL?

Food / Polish wine produced in the Zielona Góra region [41]

Still - the links I provided do point at some legit and established wine producers. So there has to be an AC classification.

Maybe in Mazowsze and in the south, though the business was small. The Fukier wine company was the biggest distributor but of course they mostly imported. There was also Kosher wine produced in the south east. In Zielona Góra it would of course have been a different country's system.

No, actually you're whinging about some people who have a situation that doesn't concern you as a non-European, that involves people's livelihoods (a theoretical matter for a teenager) and which most people over here are fine about.

That's good news - let's hope it actually translates into action.

Because Poland is a small wine producer and as a result it does not provide access to funds from national support programs

Perhaps because previous Polish governments pointedly did nothing. Good on Mr Tusk for moving ahead on this.

The important thing is that there are legal hurdles about sales of domestic wines. Your post however incorrectly suggests that the EU is standing in the way of wine production (a surprise to the people of France, Italy, Hungary, Spain, the UK, Austria, Germany, etc).

As the winemaker himself explained to me, the obstacles are Polish and they only cover grape wine (other stuff isn't wine under Polish law) hence those nasty cherry wines in the brown bottles on the bottom shelf that alkies buy and the fake Sovietski Igristoy that's in fact made in Torun from pears.

As it happens, like most people from the UK/Poland, I'm neither a eurosceptic nor a federalist. Also, in our discussions, any personal attacks tend to fly the other way, but that's by the by.

Warszawski you squirm and wiggle when you start with the bull **** and get caught out. First you link to a list that has nothing at all about wine on and then you blame the EU (didn't you say something about "buddies" in Brussels for some reason?) in order to hijack the thread. And not for the first time.

The issue about wine availability (as I think I mentioned, I was coincidentally discussing this with a producer last weekend) is that there are bureaucratic hurdles that have been in place for years and that the major wine importers have an interest in this remaining.

The rules that are hampering the development of Polish winegrowing, and which have come about because Polish law does not comply with the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU

Exactly. Still the wrong end of the stick though, and pretty pointless.

History / Polabia back to Slavs? [113]

The point is that the mining has been providing jobs there for a century and most of the open cast has now been restored. You seem to be whinging (on behalf of a community you have no connection with, in a country you don't visit, in a continent you don't live in) for no reason at all.

You miss the point that they aren't demonstrating for remotely nationalistic reasons - austerity measures affect the whole community at the moment. I wonder how much of your deportations in Germany "since 1924" happened many years ago.

History / Polabia back to Slavs? [113]

It seems quite an interesting alternative to alternative history. None of those points are realistic though and the Sorbs seem happy as they are. Around the Polish and German borders (and sometimes not that near) there are little pockets of people who some might think suit the other side of the border more, however all live peacefully and happily where they are.

Probably the people who ban him from this forum from time to time, plus the people who run all the other forums he gets banned from are in a good place to judge. As is anyone who reads his ravings.

And who's to say it isn't your nutty obsession too.

Hmm. There's no suggestion of Poland 'liberating Lusatia' (Germany's about as free a county as it gets, by the way) so not much point dwelling on Crow's nutty obsessions.

which is currently not the case now

Aside from the tautology, that begs an obvious question about why someone would rake up a 3 year old discussion, if nobody cares.

those Germans demanding "German" land back

Hardly a mass movement and the German and Polish governments have excellent relations.

Life / Mall Madness in Poland? [8]

They're popular in the bigger cities partly because during the post war years there weren't so many shops with large square footages meaning that it's a pain for shops to find the real estate they want in city centres. Not unique to Poland.

Yes, they're handy when it's cold or raining but the bigger ones in PL all seem to have the same stores. One is much the same as another.

I don't see wine as one of the products listed, warszawski

That's because it isn't included in either the PDO or PGI schemes. Warszawski does tend to get the wrong end of the stick either on purpose or otherwise.

It also requires that they'd want to. In a country where political parties, pressure groups and lobbying organisations are easy to form, there isn't any sign that a. Millions of Poles or b. Tens of thousands of Serbs (by the way those cultures are different) want their homes to be in a different country.

Life / Public Transport Woes in Poland [11]

I'd quite like to see a signal blocker on public transport, if there was any way of blocking voice calls and allowing the internet. Annoying though when people (usually very young people) play pop music from their phones. One thing I notice a lot on the Warsaw Metro is people with headphones playing music so loud that other people can hear what they're listening to.

Another odd thing in PL is people allowing children to sit while adults stand.
