Life / Is Poland split into two religions: catholicism and non-believers? [103]

Non-believers have never been a power in Poland. To compare with France or UK, Poland has ery strong religious background.

Yet there are still plenty of better educated people, especially in the capital, who have nothing to do with religion.

Genealogy / Museum of Apiculture in Warsaw [11]

You might try the apiculture museum near Poznań - they have some historical stuff. Here's a link to it - it's called the Skansen Pszczelarski in Swarzędz and one of my favourite museums.

Travel / Can I take a bus from Szczecin to Wroclaw? [14]

I generally prefer trains too, but when Szczeciń's involved it could be worth checking out flights. Sometimes the price is OK, and the journey time is obviously much less.

Life / Why so many soldiers walking on Polish streets? [17]

Aren't those military police?

Yes. They go around in together with police in some places. One police, one red beret.

The assembly point for soldiers at Warszawa Centralna has been turned into a coffee place.

Law / Urząd Skarbowy, I paid too little on my last PIT? [26]

telephone monkeys.

That was the problem. I had to sort out two issues, one for myself (getting money off them) which was OK, and one for my Polish ex who needed a notification of coding. The cow who I dealt with about the Polish person (I was doing the accent etc) was unbelievable. I suspect a bit of Xenophobia. she was actually shouting loudly.

Life / From UK, finding my feet in Warsaw, Poland. [20]

Peacocks/Primark in the uk?

Unfortunately not. I know a few Polish people who go to Berlin or even a cheap flight to Doncaster Airport and come back loaded with Primark stuff.

As for the language, don't get stressed by grammar tables, just speak and don't be afraid of making mistakes. Poles make mistakes when they're learning English, and so will you when you're learning Polish. Peter_Olsztyn's advice is good. I'd add that childrens' TV is a good way to start, and keep your eyes open for what is around you, shop signs, adverts etc.

Love / Filipina married a Polish man, need more advice [90]

will have early next year... not out yet.

He's basically treating you as his mistress, without some of the associated benefits and with all of the problems. If you decide to complete this pregnancy, make sure you take him for every penny.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

other downsides include cigarette butts littering the streets and an increase of drunken noisy people outside the pubs instead of inside where they belong

Exactly, though litter is nothing new and I only ever see small groups of mostly middle-aged people by pub doors.

News / Smoking ban in Polish bars and restaurants (AT LAST!) [400]

i quit smoking a few weeks ago

Congratulations and keep it up! My lungs have got to the point (after smoking for 30 years) that I need to stop right away or become very ill.

A downside of the ban is that in the UK, it has more or less destroyed traditional pub culture, with bars closing down at a shocking rate. My favourite bar in Warsaw is a tiny place and probably 75% of the regulars smoke. It would be a shame to see it go.

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

In fact, a few I know wouldn't necessarily even have a daily shower at all.

I know one or two like that who earn plenty but don't want to pay for the hot water, even though it's relatively cheap in PL.

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

Ever see Americans eat?

Yes, and even worse is when British people copy them but don't get it quite right.

Personally I can be quite snobbish about table manners, especially people holding a knife as if it's a pen, but have never noticed anything untoward in Poland.

UK, Ireland / The more subtle differences: Ireland/Britain v Poland [310]

I wonder how Poles get on in London, were staring at someone - is disrespecting them, especially in deepest and darkest parts, of east and south.

Or up in the Wild West that is industrial Yorkshire.

At this point, you are letting the person know he intimidates you, if in Poland stare back.

There's a trick. Look back as if their eyes are the bottom corners of a triangle. It works. If they're wearing a chav hat (USEng = baseball cap) wearer, look at the peak of the cap. Also look from person to person twice WITHOUT blinking. It really does work.

History / Felix Topolski - what a wonderful discovery (for me) [15]

Some say Zbigniew Preissner is underrated. His critics (who are usually comparing his style to modern German composers for whom beauty is avoided for various reasons) often talk about syrupy elements to his music, but ne vertheless he is excellent at what he does and any 'syrupyness' is generally very in context since he does a lot of film scores etc.

Kuryłowicz and Partners are well-known as architects in Poland, but deserve a wider reputation. The late Bohdan Lachert also.

There are also some first-class sculptors in Poland, and the Society of Sculptors gallery on ul. Mazowiecka has no permanent collection but amazing temporary exhibitions.

Law / Best Polish returns on $100,000? [23]

Don't touch catering or anything connected to it, also real estate is overvalued in Warsaw (but relatively easy to rent). Term deposits (lokaty) in Poland often give very good returns, but afaik, you're supposed to be resident in PL to have one (I wasn't officially resident when I had one, but my bank a/c was, so to speak). The poster who suggests the WIG50 is giving very good advice too.

UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

For sure it influenced his decision because these drugs make someone impulsive

Unlikely. The alliance with France and the United States may have, though. ;-)

.Maybe Hitler was affected too and took too many rushed aggressive decisions.

Some historians believe that the cocktail of drugs he was taking towards the end of the war had an effect on his decision-making.

UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

Khat's a seditive

If anything, Khat's a mild stimulant, but I agree it wouldn't be great for an army; you have to chew it for a hell of a long time to get much effect. Ephedrine (legal in Norway, by the way) would be a better choice.

For sure the british prime minister who ordered the invasion in Suez was.

Benzedrine actually. Very common in those days.

UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

Amphetamine was first invented in Germany and used by Waffen SS with the blessings of Hitler

It was invented in the 19th Century by a Romanian chemist and was also used by the US and UK during the last war. During the first war, it was on sale in decorative packets to mail to family members in the army.

Travel / Visa to Poland (stay more than 90 days in Poland) [45]

I knew a couple of Americans who live there (and illegally work) without visas. They have to go outside the Schengen zone every so often to get a stamp in their passports (and therefore a new period of entitlement), but last time we spoke they said the law may change.

UK, Ireland / Do all Brits take (illegal) drugs? [114]

Remember that not all 'drugs' are illegal everywhere; what's illegal in, say, Ireland, isn't necessarily illegal in The Netherlands. Alcohol, always legal in the UK, was highly illegal in the US and (I think) Iceland within living memory and in some other countries even today. Nicotine, legal in most places is illegal in Bhutan. I smoke and drink - in Kuwait or Bhutan I would be an illegal drug-taker.

News / Palikot - too liberal/modern for Poland? [197]

You know what your Polish friends tell you, and what Michnik writes in Wyborcza

And where do your politics come from, some sort of visceral osmosis or inherited mündliche Überlieferung?

that dildo Polikot would be screeming his filthy mouth off

Love him or hate him, the Poles as a nation voted him and his party into office and voted your favourite party out into the unemployment queue.
