Work / Why Poland employers are afraid of hiring any foreign nationals? [171]

Harry is right here, uto. Bilingual Poles may be cheaper and that's about the only way they'll get in but Polish schools pay for novelty value. Bilingual Poles will still need to show a commitment to teaching and they will likely be from a different background than teaching.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

I think he is a closet Hitler supporter. To say that we shouldn't have intervened is plainly wrong. That showed a total lack of consideration for Poland.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

Well, Irving made it apparently based on solid evidence. I found it weird to say the least but there we go. However, he cogently has a go at many conventional stats.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

Did I say that the claim was made by me or that I supported it? No, I asked you to comment on it, nothing more/nothing less. It's discussion, not defensiveness.

Work / Polish qualifications, what are they worth ? [137]

Some are worth more than others. All qualifications lose their value through time and they need to be coupled with relevant work experience. This is especially true in the areas of Law and Medicine.

History / "Poland's Concentration Camp" ?? [570]

What credible defence has there been to the contention that Polish commies set up a gas chamber as late as 1948? Not to gas extra people, of course, just to add extra evidence. To me it seems strange because it would have been done in 1945/6 if anything.

Work / Why Poland employers are afraid of hiring any foreign nationals? [171]

Could you really imagine a foreign worker working in an administrative centre as a clerk? Especially a black man. The locals would shun him and there would be even less cooperation than before. They have to be able to gabble away in Polish and a foreigner would only put a spanner in the works.

History / WAS KATYŃ GENOCIDE? Polish officers were killed [237]

No, it doesn't change the fact that a certain class was targetted and done away with. What you must understand is that there must be an actus reus, coupled with the mens rea to constitute genocide. Yes, in all likelihood they wanted to destroy the Polish nation but the natural defence to that is war crimes determine that. Katyń was outside of the war at that time and thus merits special treatment. I take your point about the prevailing political climate but it doesn't change the fact that the actus reus was only carried out on a specific class. Seriously, please read up on mass murder and refute the contention that Katyń was exactly that. See if you can come up with sth good.

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

What an absurd idea, Exiled. The Poles know about kombinowanie and they'd just hop on a plane, then return for their huge payout. Sorry but financial rewards should not be dished out in such fashion. Tusk just makes noises, he really couldn't care less about those abroad.

USA, Canada / Do many Polish people in America hate Americans? [592]

It was funny today. At my teaching school, there is a teachers' page with answers. I was doing a Writing class and there was a sample answer. Rather than use the word subordinates, they used the word inferiors. I thought that it spoke volumes for the attitude of some paperheads here. Superiors and inferiors :)

How can't you see the value of working abroad, Eagle? Do you really think my smart friend took a job "beneath" her when she went to do voluntary work in Namibia? Many Poles actually get good money for what they do abroad and they can practically use their English and learn a new culture. When you get a taste for travelling, you often don't look back.

Anyway, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Life / Why do you choose to stay in Poland, why not other country? [152]

I take the point about Polish gouda. It is an affront to call it gouda. However, the Mazdamer cheese is quite good.

Yeah, they mark-up way too much. I get the bargain goods (okazja) in my local deli and even at half-price they are overpriced. Foreign brands I mean.

About the fruit, it depends on the vendor. The quality tends to be really good but they tend to slacken off a bit when peak season disappears. There can be a huge variation in prices.

Cheeseburgers with cabbage are a bit of a novelty ;)

Well, they have many doughy foods, that's for sure. Kopytka, pierogi, kluski and those other doughy balls whose name escapes me at the moment. You buy them for a kilo in Tesco, for example. Sth like knedle.

What is your idea of good food then?

News / What the Polish government do to bring back home Polish immigrants? [116]

Yes but I said 'are leaving'. If the visa requirement was waivered then maybe but it hasn't been so the procedure is that bit harder. You can't pull stats like 2 million when you haven't counted the illegal ones.

Those Poles were not part of the recent 38 million statistic.

Polish bread is different from UK bread, not necessarily better. I disagree with the mouldy comment. British bread has preservatives (no, not condoms ;)) and lasts longer IMHO. Polish bread goes scabby and stale quicker unless it's Schulstad or US Tost.

I am a big fan of some Polish bread though. Some with no labels are really good :)

A free Poland means freedom to make decisions and many Poles choose/chose to get experience abroad, starting a new trend which many under communism couldn't enjoy. Millions of Poles are leaving? How many million? 6 or 7? You can't tell me that 1/6 of their diaspora live abroad. Since when has working abroad been a bad thing?

The only meaningful way to raise salaries in the public sector is to make real cutbacks by increasing efficiency and minimising waste.

Polish bread is not the worst in the world by a long stretch. It gets dry very quickly which is a major minus but it is right up there with bread from the 3 Baltic states and Finland. French patisserie stuff is good as is German bread for breakfast but Polish bread has the edge on them IMHO. I loved a bread called Izumo bijin (beautiful woman in Japanese), it tasted really good.

Polish food does tend to be bland in terms of using flour and cabbage but the flavour is really drawn out by using pepper, pimentos and bay leaves. Also, Poles use many spices/seasonings which can be liberally applied.

I rate Polish food and manners less than the average Pole does but please don't exaggerate.

Genealogy / If your ancestors were in the "Wehrmacht"... [217]

Most definitely not! Many here are of mixed parentage and I know this first-hand. My wife's grandma is German and the one who died 3 years ago was also German. So, both her parents are of German descent/origin. It's even more the case in Lower Silesia.
