Love / TRAVELLING to Poland - Girl Advice! [29]

I think that she might well have a reasonable idea why you're coming to Tychy.

Can't imagine any other reason to go there. I drove through and it was - well - a mistake.

I suppose it has merit if "bland Communist dump" is your sort of thing.

Food / Organic fruit and vegetable - delivery (Warsaw) [33]

There are 2 or 3 organic certification companies in Poland, if you question it in any way you can call them and check that the farm is certified.

Are they credible? I'm very suspicious of such Polish certification schemes - anyone familiar with PASE (Harry?) can explain why.

I would be more concerned about organic certification from South and Central America then Poland.

Hah, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Guess who was made head organizer

PSA is small (there are only about twenty of us)

Seems to me as if you were the only candidate...

Language / What has been the hardest language for you to learn? [81]

but because all Ukrainian people speak Russian, this is the language they comunicate with as he has learned it in school before.

They don't, though. I know quite a few who live in Lwów that don't use Russian - they know it (from TV), but they don't communicate in it unless there's no other option - their first and working language is Ukrainian.

Life / Poland monthly bills costs advice [17]

Yes, it does sound rather high, even if it's gross. Good luck if you can get it, but believe it when you see it.

It works out at 50zl/gross assuming a 20 hour week. It just doesn't sound believable right now - Callan schools are normally charging around 60-70zl for one-to-one classes. Guaranteeing those 20 hours a week is also questionable - especially as these schools have seen a massive downturn in popularity.

News / Beer and cycling - it's time for Poles to act [46]

The filth=the police

Reminds me of once loitering in a public park in a random Manchester council estate (the stupid things you do when teenagers...). A bunch of guys were obviously dealing drugs a few hundred metres away, when suddenly, a yell of "BACON" comes from a nearby house. Cue a bunch of blokes running off, only to get flattened by several burly coppers out of nowhere.

We made ourselves scarce, not wanting to deal with the inevitable questioning about why we were there and why we were nowhere near home. To this day, I can't look at a packet of bacon without thinking of that night :D

Life / Poland needs more immigrants and their children - which nationalities are the best? [518]

You people utterly refuse to have children

"you people"?

Do I need to remind you that the birth rate in Poland is lower than it is in many Western countries?

But Poland will prevail over multikult hordes.

Spoken as only a hypocritical emigrant can speak.

Anyway, Poland has far more liberal immigration policies than Western Europe.

Study / Times Higher Education rankings 2012 Poland's top universities at end! [93]

plus it's almost impossible to sack a teacher.

You think it's bad in the UK - well - it's even worse in Poland. It's almost unheard of for teachers to be sacked for incompetence here - and once they reach a certain level in their career, they have more or less immunity from being sacked anyway for performance-related reasons.

There are too many ineffective teachers and its a credit to many pupils that they thrive despite the teaching standards.

Speaking from a UK perspective - I think there needs to be a much more effective system of weeding out bad teachers. It's not enough to rely on results as an indicator - I had a truly awful science teacher once, yet chose to **** him off even more by getting 90%+ on the exam rather than failing. So - on paper - he did his job. But in reality, he was awful and should never have been teaching kids. The fact that his nickname was "paedo" says it all - he was in a relationship with an 18/19 year old ex pupil at the time.

Life / Strange "creatures" on duty - public parking in Warsaw [7]

Can anyone explain what this "service" is?? I haven't ever encountered anything similar in any other country I happen to visit.

Usual nonsense - they want money for beer. It's not a service and they most certainly aren't working there.

My rule is if there are some guys who look like they're permanently resident there (they're drinking, they've got their stuff there, they look happy) - then I'll throw them a couple of zloty because they will keep an eye on things - it keeps them happy and no-one is going to break into a car with witnesses nearby. But if it's just some random who approaches out of the blue, not a chance.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

Germany's legal code, which regulates the private rented sector, rents are capped at a % of valuation of the property.

Interesting idea - but who values the property?

Many kids thinks it's easy to learn a definition by heart then recite it than to understand it.

And bad teachers only test the memorisation of the definition rather than testing them properly.

I've prepared a rather big test for tomorrow, and the kids that have merely memorised the text from the textbook are going to leave with a nice massive "fail" :)

Love / TRAVELLING to Poland - Girl Advice! [29]

- I'm going to spend the 2 months in Tychy, that is where the girl is from.

Do yourself a favour and don't stay there. Stay in Krakow or Wroclaw instead - there's really nothing to do in Tychy.

I'm going to meet with a young photographer girl (she is 18 going on 19)

This means that she's almost certainly still in school and possibly younger than you think (a real 19 year old would be finished school by next summer and would be going to university - not in Tychy) - be careful.

Careful, Polonius - I never said that. One must be mindful of Polish criminal libel laws when making such an accusation.

Off-Topic / Are you living in Poland? [77]

I guess it's just us. Obviously everybody else 'lives' somewhere else. Probably the US of A ;)

The thing is, I'm not even interested in the why - I just want to know a simple answer to a simple question.

Real Estate / Poland's apartment prices continue to fall [1844]

although there are lots of UK resellers offering Berlin real estate and this is a warning sign when the sharks start to circle.

At least from my untrained eyes - Berlin has (at least) double the unemployment average of the rest of Germany and the city itself is well and truly lacking money. I really don't see any investment there being worthwhile, even if it's still Germany. The airport mess is just going to take even more money out of the city that it doesn't have.

UK, Ireland / Getting an S1 certificate from the UK for healthcare in poland [10]

How does "optymalizacja zus" companies work exactly, am i an employee in the uk for some company?

No, they just register you as self employed in the UK and charge you a nice whack of money for doing so. Still cheaper than being self employed in Poland, however. Also worth pointing out that no-one takes this kind of company seriously - if you're doing business with Poles, they will expect a Polish company.

Not true. I have used the EHIC card on several occasions - most recently in September for treatment for my daughter. No hassle whatsoever.

Very lucky. It worked for me in the past, too - but all it would take would be one administrator questioning it and you'd have issues. A clued up administrator in Poland would question your residency, especially if you couldn't prove that you were UK resident at the time. It's also worth pointing out that if the UK figured out that you were using it while resident abroad, they'd go after you for the amount paid - which could be considerable amounts of cash.

I have read about "optymalizacja zus" companies in the UK, where you can get reduced zus by paying NI contributions in the UK. Anyone done this to?

You can try it, sure. But they will come down on you like a tonne of bricks if they catch you - and it's much more hassle to use the EHIC card than it is to simply pay ZUS.

Life / Bishops defend Polish family [105]

I happen to accept the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.

You're a liar.

If you did, you would follow the teachings about tolerance, love and forgiveness - but you don't. You only follow the aspects that appeal to your bitter, twisted nature. You're the worst sort of Catholic - the type who uses it for their own agenda.

but that may be a hassle and embarrassment to some.

Rubbish. If he has faith and belief, it will not be a "hassle" or "embarrassment". Why would it be?

All the Poles I know who had paperwork issues which got in the way of a church marriage either just forged documents or bribed the priest.

Bribery of priests (and higher) seems to be very common - to the point where I wonder if they aren't almost introducing difficulties on purpose. I had problems too - thankfully, my wife's excellent relations with a priest managed to solve it without the need for bribery - but even he told her to get up to some chicanery with the documentation.

why you've chosen to go after defenseless children with your ugly labels.

Because he's a nasty bully who picks on the defenseless.

When morality and expediency clash, a loyal Catholic has no choice but to opt for morality.

So why don't you choose the moral approach and stop using terms like "bastard" towards innocent children?

Maybe if in Poland more taxes were invested toward education, to pay for faculty hours, equipment, experiments, field trips etc

Wouldn't make a difference. The first step is to put in place an effective mechanism for controlling numbers and teachers. Money won't make a difference if the system is rotten to begin with - it would just result in a subsidy towards inefficient public education and not actually change anything.

Life / A rant about "patriotism" in today's Poland [60]

This just sounds like you adore being accommodated and catered to.

Hardly. It's nice to see that people will actually make the effort - it's not common in Europe. I can't imagine 99% of British shop assistants in the UK using a foreign language to their customers.

Wow! Did you really?!?!? You told some boss something? Holy-sh*t that's worth about....SFA, isn't it? Give yourself a pat on the back!

It's called being nice. Never tried it?

One thing I really don't like is that Anglos always seem to expect others to speak their language... ;)

Oh yes. I particularly hate the ones who think that if someone doesn't understand, the solution is to speak louder and slower. Or the ones who get upset because the woman working in Zabka doesn't speak English!

That does not discredit the poor child, but it reflect badly on its stupid, thoughtless and irresponsible parents.

It reflects nothing but your own unhappiness with your life. Someone posting this kind of stuff at half 1 in the morning cannot be content with themselves.

Often in such cases the footloose father takes a powder, and the baby may even end up not getting baptised.

Any proof, or is this just another example of you pushing your personal issues as fact?

And ultimately the child will suffer the most.

I suspect the child will suffer far more from being called a "bastard" by some random old man than by his/her parents not being married.

Study / Times Higher Education rankings 2012 Poland's top universities at end! [93]

Listen, there are many links that basically confirm it, Polish universities are not the best in the world and when I say it, I don't mean to degrade Poland whatsoever, just stating facts.

But they are certainly better than their lowly rankings suggest.

The rankings are based on citations in well known journals I assume English language publications

Utter nonsense, really. I know for instance that there is a significant amount of work produced in German and French - if they're only taking English language into account, no wonder the rankings are Anglo-centric. And the list is nonsense - I went to a top 250 university according to that list - certainly didn't seem like it!
