Of course they do. In the classified ads you will usually find the term "pani do towarzystwa" used both by call-girls and their prospective clients. "Kurwa" is a very insulting term (although commonly used as a "comma" in the talk of many Polish people as well) and the much less insulting term for 'prostitute' used by people who do not want to sound vulgar will be "dziwka".

Several years ago when advising someone on a French forum I went to an EMPiK store in Warsaw in search of a good Polish momolingual dictionary which could be suitable for a foreign learner. I found quite a range of such dictionaries of which one seemed really perfect for that purpose. It was of a middle size and with excellent explanations for the entries, just as if they were meant for a foreign person learning Polish. I'll try to retrieve that old post of mine on that forum and if it is still there I will tell you later on what that dictionary was.

Sometimes contexts are indeed not reliable, but in most cases they are. I have been working through a lot of contexts while learning English without a bilingual dictionary dictionary and I could guess the meaning of a particular word in most of them. This method is indeed similar to immersion as the OP said. Only immersion itself can be better. Let me tell you one example from my student time when I was totally immersed in English in the north of England. I once came across the phrase "Maggie Thatcher the milk snatcher" in which I could not understand the word 'snatcher". It is indeed impossible to work its meaning from this simple phrase only. When I asked my English friend what 'snatcher' meant, he simply snatched something from my hand. He sort of decided to serve as a monolingual dictionary to me. Believe me, if I looked the word up in a Polish-English dictionary, I would most probably forget the meaning in a day (the least difficult English words to remember for me were words of Latin/Norman/French origin, the most difficult were the Anglo-Saxon ones). If I looked this word up in a monolingual dictionary like the Longman dictionary I mentioned, I would have stood a much greater chance to fix it in memory as the dictionary illustrates its entries with definitions (or descriptions) and examples of use, that is contexts. So, when coming across such a phrase, I would definitely recommened a monoligual dictionary rather than a bilingual one, of course if you don't have a quick-witted Englishman right beside you which is the best method of them all.

Totally agree with you. This is exactly the way how I used to teach myself English. This may seem very difficult at first, but is very rewarding and pays off over time enormously. At grammar school I was told to use the bilingual dictionary, but pretty soon I realized this suggestion was rubish. Anyone who genuinely wishes to have a pretty decent command of a foreign language should throw the biligual dictionary out of the house almost from the very start which is precisely what I did. Then they should buy themselves a good monolingual dictionary which should be neither too simple nor too detailed. In my case it was the "Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English". Some years ago I accidentally told someone I never had an English-Polish dictionary at home and this person was extremely surprised given the level of my English.

A bilingual dictionary is useful when you are already at an advanced stage and happen to look for words or phrases that are quite rare or specific.

I actually watch tvp news (Wiadomości at 19:30) on a regular basis in order to see something different, but also to see how this news programme evolves.

At first, when PiS took power as a result of the general election the programme was a welcome change from the choir of unanimously concerted opinion on all three main TV chanel news in Poland (TVN, Polsat,TVP). Such was the case under the PO rule when it was completely irrelevant which news bulletin you decided to watch in the evening. One famous example was the case of the privatisation mafia activities in Warsaw and everywhere else in major cities which was deliberately swept under the carpet by all the three channels. Needless to say why: the mayor of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz who was largely responsible for the affair to have continued for so long was vice-chairman of the Civic Platform (PO).

I should say the divergence of opinion broadcast on television began to improve considerably shortly after Jacek Kurski took over as chairman of TVP. Viewers started to enjoy much more choice and were served two dishes instead of one and those dishes were complimentary to one another. Those who wished were undoubtedly much better informed than they could be under the PO regime.

But for the last several months the main news bulletin on TVP1 has developed into what Delph has so aplty described as "crude propaganda". The "Wiadomości" programme has slowly turned into something you can now describe as 'unwatchable'. A most primitive propaganda reminding vividly the one of the PRL era has begun to flow from the screens relentlesly and to the extent that viewers started to switch the TVP1 channel off en masse. This must have obviously resulted in advertisers leaving and prices for adverts on TVP1 dropping dramatically.

So the management of the TVP must have felt obliged to react to all this. Neither of the participants in the discussion of this thread has noted, however, that the Wiadomości's editor-in-chief Marzena Paczuska was dismissed as recently as on the 14th of August because - according to the Business Insider Polska - Jacek Kurski "lost confidence in her". Marzena Paczuska who was chief of the Wiadomości since January 2016 has already expressed her dismay at having been fired through Twitter while being on a fortnight leave. Another PiS hardliner, Joanna Lichocka, expressed her concern at this form of dismissal.

If this change of the person in charge results in improved quality of the Wiadomości - the future will tell. I would not expect miracles, however, but some simple decency will be most welcome.

As I hear in the news, no document for that exists and the only basis for that claim was a short note in Neues Deutschland (the Communist Party official paper) back in the 1950s.

To be honest, it's impossible to distinguish between fact and propaganda concerning this issue at the moment. It is too early for that, no legal research has been done both on the Polish or on the German side yet.

The Polish side raises the fact that Germany paid France and yet another country (I have forgotten which) the war reparations as recently as in 2010.for damage inflicted in the ... First World War! I am not able to verify this news, however.

He was referring to both. Notice that Rzeczpospolita legally started to be considered a unitary state from the 3rd of May 1791 when the Constitution abandoned the former duality introducing common institutions instead which however reflected the country's past by adopting the term of 'Both Nations' in the administrative practices. But since this reformed country came into non-existence just in four years after that (in 1795), people's memory continued to keep it as a dual state whose political, but not administrative unity was declared in the act of the Union of Lublin in 1569.

Adam Mickiewicz was precisely a heir of that former tradition which was well alive until approximately the year 1850.

That's true, he neither did in the former nor in the latter. The only time he set foot on the territory of the so-called Crown as opposed to the Grand Dutchy was in Greater Poland, including Poznań, where he stayed from August 1831 to March 1832. He travelled across the Grand Dutchy of Poznań (in Prussian hands) under the name of Adam Mühl.

He felt Lithuanian in the sense of being the son of the Great Duchy. At the same time he considered himself Polish because one identity did not exlcude the other. In contemporary terms we may compare this to being Scottish and British.
