Language / Is fluency in Polish for an English speaker possible?! [30]

I am just afraid that they might not understand it when I try to talk to them in their own language or, even worse, think I'm crazy. Oh well, I just need to get confidence.

Nah you'll be fine just practice a little more so that it's more or less correct if you're slightly off people will understand it. I was in Greenpoint yesterday in New York which is a Polish neighborhood, the Arabs or Latinos that own stores there speak Polish. My friend wanted to be witty and after buying something said Gracias Seniorita to her she answered back Dziekuje kolega now in this case the kolega should have been kolego but we understood her well so it was OK. So you see people make mistakes sometimes but other will still understand them (unless you're way off lol) and appreciate the effort.

Language / "Dzień dobry! Mam na imię Elizabeth." - Is my grammar correct? (A VERY basic paragraph!) [19]

One thing to remember Liz Polish grammar is hard for a non speaker the suffix at the end of words changes depending when you're referring to a male or female, past/present/future, a person or a thing. If you practice you'll get the hang of it.

Moja ulubiona kolor jest różowy.

Moj ulubiony kolor jest różowy (my favorite color is pink)
you can say Moja ulubiona in a sentence like this Moja ulubiona piosenka to S&M (my favorite song is S&M)

Language / Is fluency in Polish for an English speaker possible?! [30]

Is it possible for an English speaker to be fluent, or even functional, in this language? I need help with my pronunciation and grammar, but I don't see where I can get much help.

The problem is you're thinking like an English speaker and maybe trying to hard let it come to you. Relax and just listen how they talk, did you ever try to imitate someone's talk? try that but keep it fun.

what is so diffcult in Polish 'R'?

I never even thought about it till now but Polish is my first language so I can't answer this one.

Love / Talking to a Polish man on "ty" terms [13]

Well if she doesn't know the man she has to wait for his reaction to see if he's interested if he smiles back then it's a green light lol.

Love / Talking to a Polish man on "ty" terms [13]

"Cześć, Co słychać?"

If you decide to go with that laid back approach say something like 'cześć, jak się masz'? with a smile.

News / Sex is patriotic: Poland's birth rate rises [34]

In Poland the average birth rate between the years 2003-2009 rose from 1.22 to 1.40

Should continue to rise. Weird how the undesirable (ugly) peoples of this planet have a lot of kids.

What are some examples of modern architecture in Poland?
These new housing blocks in Gdansk made an impression on me.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

Ukrainki are greedy. But Russkaye are even more greedy.

Many Russian girls marry just for money, he can be old but if he's rich he has her. That's just about any girl from a poorer country I guess they never wanna go through that again.

shopping

I think that a woman's illness. The amount of money I've seen girls spend on clothes was astounding. What do you need 40 pairs of shoes for? after the season is over she'll never wear them again because they'll be out of style. I know a few who have 10 or 20K credit card bills just from clothes shopping.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

Not really. But the woman pays for a dinner as well from time to time. But it is usually still the man who pays on dates etc.

Good. Beats leeching off the guy all the time.

Love / POLISH GIRLFRIEND WONT PAY HER WAY [127]

Maybe you should do something about it? Dont play your whole life with her rules. Its your life.

Don't couples in Sweden split bills and even dinner checks 50/50?

Love / Is the masculine look on women popular in Poland? [30]

Asian men look feminine.

Asian men (Orientals) are not men but little boys, except for Pacific Islander like Samoans, or Tahitians who are big men.

Polish women tend to be amongst the most feminine, unlike many Brazilian and Asian women.

well said Seanus, Polish and other Slavic girls, Czech, Russian, Ukrainian are pretty, delicate, feminine girls. Brazilian girl are overrated some (with Portuguese or other European ancestry) are good looking those from the local Amazonian Indians or black are ugly. As for Asian, no boobs, no ass, short, flat monkey looking faces. I'll pass.

but having visited 3 times, I didnt see the women as being masculine looking, rather the oposite...

True Polish girls have soft delicate Slavic features not ruff masculine faces, he just found one example and proclaims it's all of them.

Genealogy / Are Scandanavians a mix between Polish & Iberian stock? [70]

Where does it put your polish genes when slavs, germanics and celts have blue eyed people, stemming from one ancestor.

I know about the mutation (I too have blue eyes) and no ones disputing that we're all related but that was 10,000 years ago and in more recent history Slavs, Germanics, and Celts came about. In a more modern sense people kept evolving as we still do that is how usually one can tell someone else's ethnicity just by looking at them. Ey, we can go back millions of years and we all came from a monkey ;)

Genealogy / Are Scandanavians a mix between Polish & Iberian stock? [70]

as you said, LATER, back then there was no Poles and Poland yet.

But the discussion is about genetics DNA and Poles ancestors, not since when are we formally know as Poles. We could have called ourselves Martians we're talking about blood people who thousands of years ago looked like us.

Genealogy / Are Scandanavians a mix between Polish & Iberian stock? [70]

I don't think so PB.

The name comes from Polanie the largest of the Slavic tribes that united and formed Poland. In the first centuries or so the people of the united state were know and Polanie (didn't matter if they were Polanie, Wislanie, Mazowszanie those were terms of self identity locally) later the term was modified to Polacy. Just like I gave the example with Ukrainians first being Little Russians then much much later Ukrainians, yet it was the same people all along.

baby boy :-)

Don't patronize me, I'm not a kid. I know Poland's history very well. It doesn't matter we started calling ourselves Poles a thousand years ago, it's just a name the point everyone is trying to make is that it was the exact same people as today. (ex. Ukrainians only since the last few centuries identify themselves as Ukrainians and only recently have an independent country, does that mean that "Little Russians" as they used to be know were different people????)

Do you know of any document from the time before 966 calling your country Poland and your people Poles? I mean Poland and Poles

I know they didn't but it's irrelevant. It was the same people just called themselves different.

We can talk about Poland as a country since 966. Poland was baptized and established as a country.

We're talking about the people not the country itself. Yes know as Poles since 966 but it's the same people before they started calling themselves Poles.

accept the submissive position.

It's not a submisive position because Poles in other countries can do the same. Work there, claim benefits for themselves or better yet their families back in Poland. Buy and own land.

News / Lithuanian ambassador 'Poles not loyal citizens' [63]

Now they're really pushing it. Over the past few days Lithuanian television has been showing a documentary about how 13 year ago! an ethnic Polish man shot and killed 8 Lithuanians in a village. Surely the crime was brutal but it was years ago and what if it all happened the other way around?

That's true just like the men wouldn't touch their ugly women.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Worth pointing out though, that the cohesion funds normally require Poland to put up 2/3rds of the money themselves

2/3rds meaning it actually only gets 1/3rd?? or 2/3rd at first and once the projects are completed the EU pays them back?

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Barely anything - around 2 billion a year, or around 12 billion over this timescale. Bear in mind that this is just cohesion funds - in other words, stuff designed to bring Poland in line with the West. It doesn't include all the other parts of EU funding.

Wow good.

i guess it "pays" to have a big brother sometimes.

It certainly does in this case. I'm sure the Belorussian leadership is scratching their heads thinking "why didn't we go with the west when we had the chance?" lol, they chose the wrong 'big brother' who now harasses them. BTW most of this money is coming from Germany so some on this forum give them a break, please.
