Language / Difference between "i" and "oraz". [6]

People often translate oraz as as well as. It does help, as Strzyga says, avoid repetition. It is stylistic. Maybe a slight emphatic sense though that's at best nuanced. There are a few things like that in Polish, just as there are in English.

Now have a look at the difference between i and a. That's much more fun.

Work / Tax saving options in Poland [4]

tax on what is due

That's important. Paying on what is due. It doesn't rule out claiming allowances to which you are legally entitled. Not claiming those would be paying more than is due.

Work / Tax saving options in Poland [4]

avenues to save taxes in Poland?

Lots especially in terms of small tax deductible expenses, gifts to family members, etc. You do need a specialist tax adviser - and a good one, since the goalposts are always shifting and loopholes being closed. Any information from me on deductibles and tax breaks is likely to be out of date. I would suggest you keep any existing savings or investments in a jurisdiction that does not disclose anything to the Polish tax office.

News / Winnie the Pooh gets bum rap in Polish town [12]

Its sad that an element of the English language media

You forget (or perhaps just didn't realise) that the story first appeared in the Polish press. Perhaps you think that it shouldn't have ever been reported at all and those people should have just been left to wallow obscurely in their stupidity.

If they want to imply negative things to nations or groups of people by the unsophisticated elements of nations.....why don't they make a big deal about all the people from half of the world who are Third World nations who don't have plumbing and drink the same water they deficate in?

I'm sure you can find a few thousand or so articles from the past year alone about infrastructure in developing countries.

News / UK to send tanks to Poland. [36]

I don't know how accurate stats are. But I do know about queues in London because Poles reported back to me that their queues were long for a vote somewhere, presumably it was at the embassy in 2007

They were desperate for change in that election.

For the mayoral elections in London, someone told me (worth checking out) that the margin by which that clown Johnson won was smaller than the number of Poles registered to vote there...

Love / Am I wasting my time with this Polish guy ? [18]

I have faith in that change is possible. For many people they have issues and with their own determination they make changes. . I seen it done before with things far more dangerous..like drug addicts. They can turn it around if they really want to. He says he does and has already made a massive change in 24 hours.

Thousands before you have said that.

i am truly in love with him and want the rest of my life with him . ..so i am prepared to give it time

And that statement may well be tested the hard way, since the person you love is also someone you want to change.

if he were a gay he wouldn't visit Polish dating sites

No reason why not - there are more Polish sites than some might think.

Real Estate / Contemplating moving to Poland with the intention of buying a property out-right and living there [36]

Yes, I wanted to mention, that more important than tax free allowance is effective tax rate for given salary.

The most important thing is that Polish tax only applies if you live there for more than 183 (or is it 186?) days per year. People offshore generally are not on land for that long (this doesn't routinely apply to sailors by the way - they have their own tax arrangements) and they can't be caught out by the "centre of interests" rule unless they have a spouse/family in PL or are employed permanently by a company registered in Poland.

Knowing which country he emigrated too would be a good starting place. There are some very good online resources for tracking people down - however as with anything, the more information you have the better.

wants to make all the necessary changes

That just doesn't happen. You have to accept him how he is or walk away. People do not change like that for someone.

If you love someone you fight for them

This is true.

I feel lucky that I have not encountered them thus far (except in Bydgoszcz). I presume they are all over the place in Warsaw

All over the place in PL, especially in the suburbs and small towns. Warsaw doesn't have too much of a problem - just a few dodgy areas well away from the centre.

In Poland it is far easier for me and if I am brutally honest here, it may be my number 1 reason for moving to Poland :) Judge that how you will.

Nothing wrong with following your heart.

I find most hostility I have ever faced has been from older people who assume I am a troublesome stag-doo happy Brit

I've honestly never come across that - or perhaps I'm just thick skinned.

The gentleman works in petrochemicals like me so I can say that the situation of coming to Poland may be very advantageous for him.

Life / Polish post, are they still stealing stuff? [20]

MoneyGram through the post office

This works.

Think about it this way, from one post office to your door, it's probably being handled by 10+ people...what are the chances of someone in that chain being dishonest?

Unfortunately true, however they're getting better than they used to be.

He gets that anyway.

This I supppose is the Cold War, Great Game, call it whatever, coming back, but at least Poland and the UK are on the side of democracy flawed though it is.

When and where? Are you sure YOU made that promise,

I'm surprised you need to ask that one.

the endless repetition of empty patriotic gestures that we see day in day out around the globe.

I don't see that in Europe. Maybe in China or North Korea. In PL and the UK it's very poignant and a time for reflection.

... but in 1996 you lost the match ... :)

We were just warming up. Remember Agincourt!

Their dust-ridden Sherman tanks liberated my Flemish village in September 1944, so for me this is emotionally very important.

We owe a lot to those people whose youth was taken from them. And none of them wanted to be there.

Classifieds / Morrissey walks off stage in Warsaw [7]

I would have expected him to behave like the professional he's supposed to be and carried on.

I think so too.

But instead all those people, some of whom no doubt paid for flights, hotels, time off work etc etc, got to see a 25 minute performance

Exactly - given the average wages in PL, some people would have made sacrifices to get a ticket.

there will always be hecklers at these type of events. Security would no doubt have removed him

It's partly what the security are for.

News / UK to send tanks to Poland. [36]

Why do they always want to consider Poland as a battle field?

Well, I suppose the country could move. It's been done before...

Why do they always want

It's actually the government of PL who are so keen on this.

How about making a battle field in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, or in the UK, for a change..

For a change????

n spain they were 60€ per person. i don't know how much they are in Poland.

Expensive too - even dearer than the best seats at the National Opera!

They should have just thrown the heckler out and Morrissey should have been a bit more professional.

News / First Remembrance Ceremony at Lidzbark Warminski [17]

but what business does a politician who was born 30/40 years after the war have in remembering the fallen?

Every business, really. We all do.We made a promise that we will remember them. Incidentally, we also remember the German and Italian war dead (the Japs are a stretch too far for many) as well as civilians killed in war. For many people who were robbed of their youth through the actions of a foreign nation, it really was their finest hour. In Poland the horrors of war were at their worst and they do have a right to remember something seared into their national consciousness.

The UK was involved in so many wars that they wouldn't be able to find a single day in the year on which they could remember something else than their dead.

Only two where so many were killed, the last one resisting a terrible aggressor.

Is that why one of the British tabloids once planned to send an old Spitfire to Berlin and to drive a tank to the German Embassy when the English played the German soccer team? :)

Excellent!

At least we managed to stop their leader from being driven down The Mall in a stolen Rolls. Or along Nowy Swiat with the residents kept away from their windows under threat of execution.

I think those assistants opening things are under orders to do that in case you have slipped a small high value item into the box..

Exactly that.

Once she shows the relevant section to a manager he usually crumbles, stops arguing and starts to 'deal'.

That's a good idea.

News / UK to send tanks to Poland. [36]

In a way, a shame they have to do it, but while the threat from the Putinists is still there, it's a valid option:

Britain is planning more large Cold War-style tank exercises in Poland next year in the wake of Russian aggression in Ukraine, the head of the Army has said.
Gen Sir Nick Carter, Chief of the General Staff, said that the Army wanted to send more armoured battle groups for war games as he visited Britain's most easterly tank manoeuvres in Europe for nearly a decade.
Exercise Black Eagle is the largest in a number of recent exercises which the Government says should reassure Poland and the Baltic states which fear more Russian aggression after the annexation of Crimea.

I'n no fan of the guy and wouldn't pay good money to see him, but can he be blamed for this?

It has emerged that British rocker Morrissey stormed off stage just 25 minutes into his show at Poland's Klub Stodola on Wednesday night.
According to event organiser Live Nation, the incident happened because one member of the audience hurled 'extremely offensive and chauvinistic' abuse at the artist.
Although it has not been confirmed, it has been claimed the remarks stem from Morrissey's recent cancer diagnosis.

But it still doesn't make sense to me to celebrate a war that has started 100 years ago.

People aren't so much 'celebrating a war', they're remembering the fallen.

From the outside it looks as if Brits, French and Poles (and many others) are obsessed with the violent past.

Not really. More determined never allow an aggressor to appear in Europe again nor for one country to attempt to dominate.

i am just a lot easier to get along than a polish girl

Something different, and perhaps seen as having fewer complications.

try to be nice and specially, become a BETTER person first.

Very good advice - and of course those people who look like they're desperate or unhappy also look less appealing

Will Poland and the UK ever look forward instead of living in the past?

You do realise it's the centenary this year.

Will Poland and the UK ever look forward instead of living in the past?

I suppose different nations look back from different points - Germany for example only from shame.

The cemetery is party of the multi-national POW cemetery of the former WW1 Heilsberg prison camp.

There's also a small Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in Poznan, at the Citadel.

Life / What do you like about Poland? [100]

I think here the law differs with the UK, if this is so for PL. In England & Wales, a physical (not online) supermarket or other shop can put the wrong price on and they don't have to sell it at that price.

That's right. The advertised price in a supermarket is an 'invitation to treat' rather than an offer to sell - that bit comes at the checkout.

In PL however it was very normal a few years ago for prices to be wrong - they just didn't bother to change the price tickets. A hangover from the days of high inflation probably when people were used to prices constantly and quickly rising which shop owners were keen to take advantage of even when things had settled down. The arrival of the big chains put a stop to that.
