Genealogy / How can the surname Drzewiecki be both Jewish and Catholic? [37]

Many of Spain's "Spaniards" are Jewish, and roughly 20% are.

We aren't talking about Spain, however rather than "20%", the accurate figure is between 0.26% and 0.39%, between 12,000 and 18,000 people.

Law / Divorce in Poland - fault - rights to property predating the marriage [34]

That's probably why lawyers charge so much. Though it does beg the question why you bothered asking here in the first placeas well as showing you up to be rather rude and uncivilised to post like that and franky rather strange to return with a throwaway comment that a lawyer you visited two years later disagreed with an old discussion on a forum.

Happy divorcing, anyway.

Food / Nothing better than skwarki! [19]

Little cubes of pork fat (the bit of the bacon without any meat on) fried slowly until transparent together with mostly with pierogi and served on top of them. They can also be used with kasza grzyczana etc..Out of fashion now for obvious reasons however some people still use them and they do add someting to otherwise bland food.

Traditional throughout Eastern European cuisine - still very common in Russia and the Ukraine - more so now than in Poland which tends to be more health conscious.

Life / Traditional Folk Costume for those from Warsaw [16]

Warsaw itself is a bit too urban and has been for a long time, however traditionally Mazowsze (the region Warsaw is in) had their own style - very similar to Kurpie a little to the north. This is a photo from a folk museum near Warsaw.

Food / Can you buy HP Sauce in Poland? [20]

You don't say which city you're in, however Kuchnie Świata (Warsaw and a few other places) has it, as does (in Warsaw) MiniEuropa.

Life / Want to become an expat to Poland? Consider your options before going abroad. [18]

I was applying for positions that didn't require language at all. like work in the kitchen

Unskilled jobs like kitchen assistant have a lot of people chasing them - as well as being very badly paid with restaurateurs using every trick in the book to get arounfd the minimum wage requirements.

News / Turkey abolished visas for Poles. [80]

If you get the visa online, surely you have to pay when you submit the application and not on arrival?

Yes, you have to pay online at the time of application.

As for visa on arrival, it's a grey area. There are supposed to be booths now at Istanbul Airport where you can sort out an e-visa before going through the barrier (though I haven't noticed any) and there are wifi zones airside where you can get an e-visa however they are still issuing paper ones at the normal kiosks to the right of the immigration desks. UK citizens are supposed to get the e-visas however in Turkey things don't always work how you expect ;-)

Study / Which city to be an exchange student for? (Medicine) [4]

Warsaw is best. Poznań also has a good reputation.

There's also a Turkish Airlines flight IST-WAW and if you look on Momondo they often have a cheaper option changing planes in Kiev.

Love / Addressing your Polish in-laws or boy/girlfriend's parents? [49]

Don't think anyone is forced, always thought it was part of Polish culture to show respect to elders, by addressing them correctly.

You should certainly start off that way. They may suggest first names themselves - in any case it would be polite to give them the choice.

A lot would depend on how old they are, how traditional or not they are, what sort of people they are - but best to start off formal and relax afterwards.

News / Poland allowed birds and animals to be sent through the postal service? [5]

but up until 2013 it was legal although may not be any longer. I am very surprised that it was ever allowed in Poland.

I think it would be special sort of service; not the normal post. Something geared to birds etc.

I mean you wouldn't just stick one in a jiffy bag and put it through the automated sorting office...

Life / Cheap Laundry places in Warsaw [7]

Which part of town are you in? There's a very cheap (and good) place in Zoliborz, on ul. Promyka.

News / €80 billion for Poland new EU budget [166]

Polish rail freight market is second only to the German marke

Actually, when I worked at a large consumer goods company in PL, they stopped using Polish rail freigh due to the level of theft. Every consignment had something missing and the scale of theft suggests it was very well organised. This was not long ago.

Travel / Buying PLN online with EURO [7]

They're ok too. I still recommend WorldFirst - they are pleasant and easy to deal with, also quick.

Law / Agricultural business. Registering as self employed in Poland. [18]

There are tons of threads on this.

It's very possible, but does require a bit of legwork round various offices, plus there's a lot of false information on various threads (people saying you need a PESEL, a dedicated bank a/c etc)

History / Are Poles grateful to the Russians for winning the war? [120]

to just become slaves to

Certainly, the modern age has brought problems, like immigrants from another continent trying to make illegal sham marriages etc.

Oops, hang on a minute, didn't you start a thread about that?

Life / Eastern Orthodox in Gdansk? [3]

Apart from ul. Traugutta, they also have the liturgy at one of their two cemetery chapels - times vary, so you'll need to ask at Sw. Mikolaj on Traugutta, however it's usually on Saturdays.

You mean buying resources, on the open market.

Not that there are many resources being sold by Afghanistan.

Life / Anyone like the Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski? [5]

He has a following, but like any artist he's not to everyone's taste and I've heard people in Poland and elsewhere say they dislike some of the stark imagery - I would agree with this. The circumstances of his death mirror the brutality of his work.

News / Self-important Warsaw mayor [18]

If it's illegal it's a matter for the courts. If it isn't illegal then it isn't 'fraudulent' and is just tittle tattle.
