Life / Planning a first time leave towards Poland soon, need advice! [10]

I will figure it out

Poland is not a country that can be just figured out easily. Being totally honest, unemployment is above 10% and around 2 million according to one estimate have left in the last 9 years to find work. And they had the benefit of speaking the language and understanding the culture.

I would like to move to a main city area in Poland and rent a room/place for myself, and start work along the way.I was thinking Warsawa due to being near transportation, shops, music venues,restaurants,work...etc

What do you propose that you will do for work in Poland, bearing in mind your background as a

My background in occupation is as a Warehouse Worker/Customer Service Representative so I work highly in the industrial area and as well as with the general public in stores

Without any knowledge of Polish?

handling euros will be an option for me to start of course).

If you haven't even got the name of the currency right, Poland is going to be a struggle.

News / Why is Amazon not present in Poland? [57]

I think that may be my method for next try then.

What's strange is that Amazon UK delivers to Poland, but Amazon DE doesn't...

Law / Tax papers, declaration in Poland (how to proceed?) [5]

You don't need an accountant, it's a pretty simple form to complete. What I'd do is just ask someone that you work with - the form really doesn't take long at all to fill out. In your case, I'd just ask your boss - they really shouldn't have a problem with doing it for you.

Accountants will try and charge you a lot of money for doing it, but there's absolutely no need.

Travel / Road Trip through Poland in the Summer [6]

But if we quite fancy camping? Or is that not a good idea?

It's not a bad idea at all, and can be done very cheaply in many parts of Poland. For instance, I stayed here once - hotel-pttk.pl/pl/camping - not a bad place at all and ridiculously cheap if you want to camp.

You can go much better than that if you look for rooms in private places - last time I was there, you could get a very decent room with a bathroom for as little as 70zl a night. I did stay in one very strange place in Nałęczów though..

Life / Is living cost in Poland lower than Germany ? [32]

with some of the housing offers i've seen on here i'd say that plenty of folk are paying less in Germany.

Is that not at least partially due to the differences in attitude towards home owning?

Certainly it's cheaper to live in many parts of the ex-DDR than in Western Poland.

Law / Do I really need an accountant when I'm self-employed? [16]

No problem, misunderstandings are just that, misunderstandings :)

And yes, it certainly is sensible to spend time doing business and not worrying about the intricacies of the Polish tax law.

History / Good books and games about the PRL (Polish People's Republic) [6]

Aha, I found a reference suggesting he is. As you say, I can't imagine him going to some of those places without speaking the language at least reasonably well in those times.

His words in the book about Jaruzelski's legacy are interesting, too.

Yep, I've got it sitting at home. He certainly did a great job of showing how Solidarity were a horrifically socialist organisation at heart, especially their demands!

Do you know if he speaks Polish, incidentally?

Law / Do I really need an accountant when I'm self-employed? [16]

She might be mistaking the recommendation to use one with it being mandatory - the usual idea is that you get one that's registered with the Ministry who will take responsibility for your taxes, so then you don't have the tax office banging at your door. But I'm sure it's not compulsory, have you ever seen those tax books that you can buy? They're sold in my local tax office, at least...

Study / How hard is it to get accepted to Wroclaw University of Technology? / Unis in general? [37]

Ah yes, you're right.

I would expect that course to be quite competitive in terms of entry - you can normally find this information available online somewhere. I'd be willing to bet that your grades aren't going to be good enough to get onto that course - I know what Politechnika Poznanska expects, and I'd be surprised if it was any lower in Wroclaw. Computer science is notoriously difficult to get into in Poland (due to many, many high calibre applicants) - and a course in English for free will be very attractive, especially as a good job will almost be guaranteed to graduates.

Best bet is to contact the university directly and figure out how many points your A-levels will be worth, then compare to last year's admissions.

The course actually might be quite good, and Poland is producing many very good CompSci graduates at the minute. For that reason, I think it's pretty unlikely that you'll get accepted with those grades.

Study / How hard is it to get accepted to Wroclaw University of Technology? / Unis in general? [37]

Because of some quirk in the Polish constitution, universities are required by law to be less selective.

That's not true at all. What the truth is that Polish universities simply do not have a cut off for grades, so it's all down to the competition for places. If the quality of applicants for a course are low, then the entry requirements are equally low. Likewise if a course attracts a high quality of applicant, then the grades required will also be very high.

Once you're there, you'll receive little if any attention or help

That's how the big boys play.

Besides hard to tell how much their degree is worth abroad

General consensus seems to be that degrees in Polish from a good university are worth something, but English language courses are mostly seen as being a complete joke (why would anyone come to Poland to study in English when they can study in an English speaking country?).

while as a EU-national I can get free education at what is essentially one of the best if not the best technical uni in Poland.

Not in English you can't. You'll be paying quite a bit of money, and there aren't any student loans to support you.

Can anyone offer some advice with regards to this?

Universities will take anyone on English language courses as long as their qualifications are equal to the Matura. In your case, three passes at A level is more than enough. The fact that they'll take anyone should be seen as a pretty obvious hint as to the credibility of the courses.

As for fending for yourself, most universities are very good with English speaking (hint : paying) students. I've never heard of them leaving such students to rot - they will normally help you quite a lot as they won't want to lose the several thousand Euro a year in fees.

But you should consider something else, and that is that 99% of English language courses in Poland are a complete joke designed to get money from non-EU nationals who want a cheap education.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

Tomaszewski is defending nothing but hs own political position. Like most right-wing politicians of Polish nationality, he's a smart guy that's figured out how to use and exploit the poor stupid people.

It's not exactly a big secret that the older Lithuanian Poles tend to be poorly educated - hence why his message and claims are believed.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

Their coalition with Russians, or how polish media interpret what's going on in LT, is irrelevant, unless you think that desecrating graveyards and threatening LT Poles is a justified pay back for Mr. Tomaszewski's actions.....

I don't know - I imagine a significant portion of Polish society would be absolutely appalled at the thought of any sort of parliamentary collaboration with Russians.

As for the graveyard desecration and the threats - it is, sadly, a response to Tomaszewski's actions. It's the same way that there was a reaction in Poland after the actions of the LT Government in the past.

Both sides really need to grow the **** up.

You must be insane Delph if you say that. No one in PL really knows who Tomaszewski is.

But he - undeniably - has been very good at convincing even the liberal Polish newspapers that the Polish minority is under constant attack in Lithuania. As I said - it wasn't widely reported that he went into coalition with the Russians, only that they had entered parliament.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

By the way I would think that if somebody is against violence, chauvinist and all kind of bad behavior including desecrating tombs and painting slogans threatening death to ethnic groups.

As I said, it's due to Tomaszewski's hysterical leadership - and no doubt partially because of his little coalition with the Russians. It's still not the right thing to do, but almost understandable given the constant provocation.

Just one of many examples I know. No one cares.

Indeed.

Another example how the vile Tomaszewski cult has thoroughly brainwashed the Polish media.

"subventions" for every school? Really? Care to tell us how much the American School of Warsaw gets? Or the British school? I'd be very confident in saying that they get bugger all.

I *think* the cash goes to any school that is approved by the Ministry of Education - so that would exclude those two.

News / Stiffer traffic rules in Poland? [32]

By that phrase, I hope you mean you would telephone the police and notify them of a suspected drink-driver, and not intervene any further unless you possess a warrant card and the authority to do so.

Nope. I'd get them to stop, take their keys and throw them as far as I could into the nearest source of deep water. I've called the police before to intervene in dangerous situations and been met with total apathy - so dealing with the situation makes sense.

(and then call the police)

Cripple people with debt for a few years.

Could work actually - such people do tend to own property that they got cheap.

I'd also be massively in favour of compulsory community service for such people. Mind you, Polish prisons are no walks in the park.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

So you are ready to rightfully complain about such events in PL, but not in LT?

Both are equally vile. But while in Lithuania, there has been a considerable amount of provocation - no such provocation exists in Poland.

Was this guy a democratically official?

The leader of a legitimate political organisation. One that could easily get elected next time round.

News / Piłsudski tomb desecrated in Wilno [34]

I'm sure some dodgy far right organisations there have called for the murder of Lithuanians, too - the sentiment about returning Vilnius "by force" isn't unknown there. And even recently in Poland, we had some guy saying that they would march upon Lwow and Wilno!

Anyway - if the former Ambassador to Lithuania is criticising the Polish groups there, there must be something in it - right?

delfi.lt/news/daily/lithuania/buves-ambasadorius-kritikuoja-lietuvos-lenku-lyderius.d?id=20424

As for the desecration of a grave - how can they complain when such events happen in Poland too?

Are you a PiS paranoic? :)

Not really - the amount of civil disobedience by young people against a PiS regime would soon bring it down ;)

Ever heard of parish records? ;-p

Yep. Don't trust them ;)

They create a folder when you get baptised ;)

You laugh, but when you consider the amount of collaboration seen by churchmen in other countries - isn't it scary to think that it could be used against you by a future regime?

It surprises me to no end how you supposed defender of weak, tied and minorities are set against Poles in Wileńszczyzna. Is that personal?

I can't stand Tomaszewski's rhetoric and manipulation of the minority there. The guy is not a leader, he's a troublemaker and one that went into coalition with Russians to achieve his electoral aims!

You are trying to mask it by singling out they democratically elected leader but you know that if it would be Jewish minority you first would be screaming anti-Semites, are being anti-Polish delph or just usual bigoted self?

If the Jewish minority behaved the same way as the Polish minority did, I'd criticise them too. Much of what's reported in Poland is sensationalist nonsense - they believe whatever comes out of Lithuania without even bothering to check their information. Gazeta Wyborzca is hilariously nationalist in this sense. Need I remind you about the "protest" in Vilnius where the kids didn't have a clue as to what was going on, yet they were supposedly protesting?

I can't speak for Delph, but if any Jewish leader in Poland was behaving like the Polish leaders in Lithuania, I'd be happy to hold the coat of any Pole who wished to discuss the matter in physical detail with said Jewish leader in Poland.

Likewise. The Poles are behaving themselves just fine in Ukraine - why are they causing so much trouble in Lithuania?

Incidentally, there are Poles who oppose Tomaszewski too (especially younger, educated ones who speak Lithuanian fluently) - but their voices are drowned out by the hysterical right wing rantings of their political leaders. There are certainly people who aren't too happy about his electoral alliance with Russians!
