History / Most important Poles and Slavs that ever lived [74]

John Paul II.

If you include him, why not Ss Cyril and Methodius. Religious too and much more impact.

I am pretty sure that there are not 1.2 billion people that read Dostoyevski, so not even talk about how many people in fact understood and liked Dostoyevski.

A very accessible writer who'll be read long after JP2, for all his qualities good and bad, will be a footnote in history.

Travel / Train from Warsaw to Siedlce [27]

The bus leaves Modlin Airport at 15.09, the train leaves Modlin railway station at 1529, and change at Wschodnia (train leaves 1628). You get to Siedlce at 1723.

If there's a delay at the airport the next one is: 1518 bus from airport, 1538 train from Modlin, get off at Legionowo (tiny station) and get the train at 1611 to Wschodnia. Then a train leaving Wschodnia at 1644. You get to Siedlce at 1804.

It all repeats at 1609 and 1618, exactly an hour later if the plane's delayed.

Bon voyage!

Travel / Train from Warsaw to Siedlce [27]

From Śródmieście and they go through Wschodnia on their way to Siedlce. You can go directly to Siedlce and yes, you'll be there the same day (late afternoon/early evening).

History / Most important Poles and Slavs that ever lived [74]

Man was Polish. We all knows it. All Slavs knows it.

There is considerable discussion on this matter - even here.

What about Andy Warhol? Alexander Nevsky?

Life / Best selling womens items at daily and weekly markets in Poland? [11]

Two branches now and the coach and railway stations full of blue and white carrier bags heading to Poland - doesn't help market traders much, especially in the west of the country. There are still markets in Warsaw however Bazar Rozyckiego is a shadow of what it once was, the one by the Palace of Culture is long gone and even Wolumen has shrunk.

The OP has a good idea, however he'll have to choose exactly the right places.

History / Most important Poles and Slavs that ever lived [74]

Was he Slavic?

Yes,

Was he positive?

Depends on your point of view, however the thread says "important" and he was certainly that

Well, maybe if i move out Pope John Paul II, i can create space for Dostoyevsky. What you think?

Yes, in terms of lasting impact.

Ditch that Svetopluk person and also the Zawisza one. Chopin and Stravinsky deserve a place. Maybe Kosciuszko too.

the market had just literally disappeared, just gone.

When I was last in Primark in Berlin, I could hear lots of Polish being spoken. People do still buy bras etc on the market, but less than before and I know a couple of Market Traders in Wasaw who've packed it in due to earning less and less.

History / Most important Poles and Slavs that ever lived [74]

***Pope John Paul II
*** Zawisza Czarny
*** Svatopluk I of Great Moravia
*** Novak Djokovic

Remove these, replace Dvorak with Smetana, add Dostoyevsky, , Marie Curie, Lenin and Chopin (half Polish) and there you have it.

News / Is Poland's PO party left or right wing? [15]

If there's even a chance that the PiS cretin might win, I vote PO to keep the cretins out.

Remember they got in office on a low turnout and by forming a coalition with extremists. They were also voted out before they'd completed a term of office - and that on a much higher turnout.

I vote PO to keep the cretins out.

People did exactly that. They may not be perfect however the alternative is unpalatable to the electorate.

Study / Learning English in Warsaw, can anyone recommend a tutor/academy? [16]

I think there's a membership fee for internations that includes drinks at events however as far as I know it's possible to just pay a cover charge and get one drink. A friend just joined in Athens and explained some such thing.

ErikaLee, try the International Women's Group - some members are native speakers, some are not (with varying levels of English) and friends who attend really enjoy the chance to meet new people. They have different activities at different times.

These might also be useful:
bellschools.pl
mmenglish.edu.pl
thetower.com.pl

I know people who've worked at all of them and they were good teachers however the schools might have changed since then. They are worth checking though,

Good luck!

Travel / Train from Warsaw to Siedlce [27]

I was thinking the same. There aren't really queues though at the ticket windows at Wschodnia and not usually at Srodmiescie.

Dworzec Centralna

The wrong station anyway.

Travel / Train from Warsaw to Siedlce [27]

And what about the tickets i'm buying? It looked like i needed less from the messages you sent earlier, but as i told you, i got confused so maybe i just didn't understand

Sort of (that 60 min ticket is only good round Warsaw - it won't get you to Siedlce) so better just to ask at the railway booth at Modlin (called 'Koleje Mazowieckie'). You can buy a ticket to Siedlce there (or at Modlin Station if the booth is closed).

You can change at either Wschodnia or Srodmiescie, howevr if you've bought the ticket at Modlin Airport or Station, you should change at the first one you stop at.

An easy journey and both stations are user-friendly (Wschodnia being easiest).

Can i get the last train from both the stations?

Very clear already and yes it's right, the Siedlce train stops at both those stations. Srodmiescie is a smaller station with just 2 tracks, one in each direction (easy to get the right train), Wschodnia is less busy and more modern, but quite large.

Real Estate / Cheap Poland Flat Pricing online as low as 75,000 zl are these prices real? [26]

Yes - the way apartment buildings look from the outside isn't always a clue, especially since EU accession and the work done insulating and painting them. Often the fundusz remontowy doesn't stretch to painting the graffiti out of the stairwells or getting hot water to the radiators on the top floor. And of course a rough neighbour is a rough neighbour regardless of whether the block has been painted or not.

That area of Wola that I mentioned is a bit like that - it looks much better now but still has social problems. The coming of the metro will help, just as the increase in student numbers at the local university has helped Wrzeciono a bit. It hasn't resulted in more interesting shops or (any) bars though.

There are very few areas in Warsaw that are cheap. There are still bargains round Konrada and across the river and also the bit of Wola that I mentioned. I was looking at Otodom (the site the OP mentioned) the other day for Siedlce (I've long fancied living there) and they had some bargains compared to Warsaw but a suspiciously large number in sale for such a small town. And besides, my partner's work (plus some personal issues) more or less restrict us to Bielany/Zoliborz/Bemowo.

Life / Collection and delivery laundry service in Poland? [6]

In big cities of course.

Assuming it's Warsaw (a big assumption, I know) I can strongly recommend these. They're mainly a commercial one but will collect from a domestic customer if the address isn't too far away from their other clients. They are good and I've used them for years, mostly but not only for dry cleaning.

No - much further down. Maybe even parallel to Kasprzaka on Zeromskiego at the bit towards Metro Slodowiec where they're fairly close.

This is very relevant to low flat prices, Wrzeciono (and similar areas) and lack of amenities. The pizza place with outdoor tables I mentioned in Wrzeciono (on ul. Przy Agorze near the mini-supermarket) does sell beer in summer to a clientele of shaven-headed knuckle-draggers and their scrawny girlfriends, a generation or so from subsistence farming. This is the only 'bar' (and it isn't a bar really) in quite a large area. The OP doesn't realise that in these areas with cheap flats there is often poor infrastructure and amenities because the residents simply don't have the disposable income. Rather than go out, people drink at home in front of the TV.

On paper it looks great if a flat is 150,000zl, however the local facilities that exist are affected by the residents' low spending power.

Travel / Train from Warsaw to Siedlce [27]

I noticed that both Modlinbus and Koleje Mazowieckie do have a counter inside the terminal building,

You are indeed right - that's fairly recent. A young woman who didn't bother to carry a float of change used to collect the fares on the bus and I nearly fell about laughing when she told some bemused tourists that they should get coins from the bankomat!

Thinking about it, PhillipeDaverio could get any train from Modlin - wherever it goes to in Warsaw, that ticket will get him to Wschodnia. Or just get off in Warszawa Śródmieście (most, maybe all, Modlin - Warsaw trains stop there) - the Siedlce trains also stop there before they get to Wschodnia.

He should get off the train from Modlin at Warszawa Śródmieście depending on which side of the train he gets out of, he'll either be on the middle platform and just has to stay there and get a train on the other track or on the side platform in which case he just has to cross over to the other side.

Most people would do it that way and I suspect the Wschodnia thing has a lot to do with the problems with jakdojade.

Travel / Train from Warsaw to Siedlce [27]

I tried to use jakdojade and it made it a little clear

Often jakdojade makes things worse!

1. Can i buy tickets for the bus which is taking me to train from Modlin, in Modlin? Do they accept euros?

Yes, you buy them on the bus. They don't accept Euros and they don't carry much change. Get some zlotych from the cash machine inside and buy a can of pop at the shop so you've got some coins or a small note.

2. Is it hard to find the right train track in Wschodnia, and do people who sell tickets speak english, usually?

It's easy now - Wschodnia has been modernised and is easy to use. I doubt many of the staff speak English, so write 'Siedlce' on a bit of paper if you're unsure of the pronunciation. You could also write 'bilet w jedną stronę', meaning 'one-way ticket'. No need to get a return ticket and it isn't expensive.

. If i take money from an ATM, will i receive Zloty? (I live in Italy, so Euro is my currency) I'd like to avoid kantor in airport because i know they have some bad change rate.

Yes - you'll get zlotych.

Bielany which has none of multitap things, nor does it have (I think) an Indian restaurant, but still one of the best neighborhoods in Warsaw to live in.

A restaurant and bar free zone in many ways but still a great area and parts are deservedly expensive. The Indian Harry mentioned looks worth a visit. I can live without multitap - a smaller range is fine - for me it's the atmosphere.

It is indeed a horrible place, but there isn't a prayer of getting a flat there for anything like 75,000zl

Wrzęciono (where 2 room flats, top floor of 5, no lift) are comfortably above 200k) has a fairly crappy pizza shop with tables outside and the posher pizza restaurant on Heroldow (shuts at 10pm) sells drink. There might be a few places with drink towards Zeromskiego and I noticed the Vietnam Bar (that's what it looks like) on Kasprowicza sells beer too. If the OP wants anythink like the variety of places that he's used too, he'd have to look for the more expensive areas nearer the centre.

The picture is what you can get for 180k in Warsaw. It's in maybe the roughest part of town and needs serious and expensive work unless you're happy with the kitchen being a cubicle in the bedroom which in turn leads off the living room. It's, by the way, in an area with high crime levels.

The only ones close to those prices are 1 room flats in 'Stan developerskie' (not even light switches or a toilet) in Zbąszynek - the back of beyond, a 1 room near the Czech border, a tiny TBS for 95k in a part of Warsaw that's not really Warsaw, an unconverted cellar with no windows and an unconverted attic without planning permission, likewise windowless plus similar, like a 1 room in Warka or Będzin.

Otodom.pl is fairly well known however you'll see that most of the flats there are at normal prices.

Yes. Ursynow isn't to everyone's taste - the first flat I lived in in Poland was there. Looks a bit like Miami in summer and Scu nthorpe in winter. No Indian restaurants open then at all. One opened by Metro Stoklosy on the (then new) shopping centre a few years ago - good there are more now. I quite like that bit of Wola/Ochota borders near the new mosque. Some bargains to be had however as soon as the metro is extended there prices will skyrocket as they did in the bottom bits of Ursynow towards Kabaty.

Note to mods - is there a reason that the town Scu nthorpe is replaced by asterisks?

Re. 75000zl flats in Warsaw etc, if they existed they'd be snapped up immediately by investors so something wrong with the website in question, assuming a. the ads exist and b. the OP's reading them correctly. Even somewhere cheap and in the sticks like Siedlce is more expensive than that.

Looking at online ads for flats in Ursynów, the cheapest 1 bedroom flat (out of several thousand) is 260,000. That's in one of the worst bits of Ursynów too. Something dodgy about the ads the OP saw.
