Work / Navy Guy seeks help looking for work in Poland! [19]

Upper management's a whole different story. Hopefully, the folks he'll be working with and consulting will have a familiarity with English until the OP's Polish is up to snuff.

USA, Canada / Moved back from Canada to Poland:). Here are the reasons why. [868]

the train ride there from Wroclaw almost drove me to suicide.

Hahaha. I'm sorry for your misery but that reminds me of the train rides back in my day. I would get out of the train feeling the same way!! Some rides were simply brutal.

Life / What is wrong with Poznan? [197]

Silence...

Could it be that "she" doesn't want to take me up on the offer, because "she" has a penis and is actually an Indian from Toronto?

The plot thickens

During your times in Poland it was also for free (for Polish citizens).

It was I know. I mistakenly thought it would have gone with the fall of communism.

It worked for me!

Life / What is wrong with Poznan? [197]

I can imagine it being very, very stressful for older patients who haven't got a clue why these guys have turned up, all speaking an unknown language and giving off incredibly negative body language

Believe it or not, a lot of the seniors we went to interview/examine were quite curious about us. They seemed to look forward to our arrival. I think we broke up their dreary monotonous routines living on the wards.

Yeah, it mostly doesn't bother me.

Me too! Try a call to the States in the 80's......One mellows with age :)

As I say - not good enough to get in, so you came here to a university that's regarded as a joke in NA

That's not true. Polish med schools enjoy a good reputation in the States.[quote=pip]You

Travel / PKP (Polish National Railway) is a turn off [47]

Which reminds me of the time when I took my first PKP ride back in '78. I was with 2 other Jersey boys. We were "lounging" (legs extended with feet resting on the seats opposite us). When the conductor, a female, ripped into us for our "barbaric behavior" (her term), beleive you me, I never ever did that again!....I remember the cars being clean save for the WC - THAT was truly barbaric! lol

USA, Canada / Looking for a Polish language school in South Jersey, USA [7]

My sister (and her two kids) having been inspired by my return to Poland with its re-connection to family want to learn Polish. She is very stubborn and I believe she'll learn enough once she sets her mind to it. The only problem is, she hasn't been able to find a school. When I was a boy all the Polish social clubs ran "Polish schools" on the weekends for the kiddies to learn. Does anyone know of such a school?

Sis lives in Vineland, NJ (about 45 min from Philly).

USA, Canada / If America is so bad, why move here? [254]

I don't. But alas your dictionary seem to be confined to this: "You are either with us, or against us".

I Honestly couldn't care less - love us, hate us, it's all the same to me and most Americans ;)

Food / The 12 dishes of Poland on Christmas Eve. [51]

I love being polish!!!!

So do I, however it wasn't always such.

I was going to save this for another time but I have been moved by some of the posts AND the midnight Mass po góralsku I'm currently watching on TVP. So here goes and please forgive me if I tend to get a tad maudlin.

It's almost a year since I accidentally found you guys on an errant Google search. Trust me, I wasn't looking for you but am I glad I found you!

Thanks to you guys, I have learned a lot about the current-day Poland: its politics, its shiny and its ugly sides. In the beginning it was a little rough not knowing all the players. Some of you come at us hard while others prefer a little finesse. It's all good (as the brothers here say). I have been away for a while. There was a long period where I had secretly renounced my Polishness for selfish reasons. I had completely detached myself from all thing Polish. I had deprived my wife and daughter of all that's great about being connected to Poland: Wigilia, kolędy, the food, its people, it's crazy mixed-up people that I have grown to love and respect, etc. I'm glad I'm over it. I have newly-connected and re-connected with family and that's a great thing.

I'm also glad, that on this Wigilia night, I feel such a strong connection to this quixotic yet at times reassuringly pragmatic country.

I also want to thank all of you, (you know who you are), who helped me in my various quests. Whether it was quick translations, ideas on how to find relatives, or simply allaying my fears just before my return to the motherland, the PF community delivered with rapid, accurate and when needed compassionate responses.

I am an American of Polish ancestry and a member of Polish Forums both of which suit me just fine.
Thanks again. I'm looking forward to another interesting year on this site.

Wesołych Świąt i Śczęśliwego Nowego Roku to my PF family!

[mods please forgive my being off-topic. I was moved by the events surrounding me]

Life / You are Polish if... [433]

An Englishman says "I'm tired and thirsty, I must have beer", a Frenchman says "I'm tired and thirsty, I must have wine", a Pole says "I'm tired and thirsty, I must have diabetes".

very funny! You just described 50% of my family ;)

Work / Moving and working in PL as a teacher (near Zory/Katowice) [53]

I don't mean to be nasty to him, but this is the kind of thing that can destroy relationships.

I lived this scenario myself for 4 years. I got through it unscathed, so will our OP. Tomjustyna, just stay positive. Don't sweat the small stuff. Let Babcia have her way. WHO CARES! At the end of the day (and everyday until you die) YOU are the dad. Not even the all-powerful Babcia can match that. Relax and enjoy the fact that your child is surrounded by so much love and attention :)

all true DD

No it's not!

take one piece of advice from me. Never trust anyone in Poland until you know them well, not even your own in-laws

Ludicrous! I had wonderful in-laws; I trusted them completely. It was their daughter I shouldn't have trusted ;)

History / 13 of December - the anniversary of MARTIAL LAW in Poland [48]

Merged: 30th Anniversary of Martial Law

Please forgive me if it appears I'm beating a dead horse but I can't restrain myself. All evening long I'm watching archival films and listening to eyewitness accounts from that time in December, 1981. A time that I know from personal experience. Now, for me, it's a distant memory but for many, many Poles, apparently, it still haunts them. They remain angry. I can't help but think about South Africa's "Truth and Reconcilliation" effort and how Poland would benefit from something similar.

Maybe these are the words of a sentimental fool- maybe not. All I know is that this "stan wojeny" thing is cancerous and needs to be excised. Why hasn't that happened? Is it too early? Unimportant?

Lack of leadership?......This really vexes me; I'm not quite sure why :(

USA, Canada / Going back to the Old Country of Poland after more than 25 years! (from USA) [249]

My time in Wrocław was coming to an end. I had seen almost everything I had wanted to re-visit. The zoo, Gardens and the new stadium will have to wait until next year. I was happy, that the city had moved forward in terms of the apparent: new buildings, new roads, new shops, etc. However, I would have expected more after so many years. I wish I had more time to scratch beneath the veneer and examine the real Wrocław. I, unfortunately, did not have an opportunity to speak with the natives; to get inside their heads. Especially intriguing to me are the conversations I want to have with the over 50 crowd. I want to compare notes.

Here's my last pic. I don't remember what this is or where this is.

  • where is this?
