Love / My Love Story: my 'good' family vs her 'bad' family in Poland [25]

Have you actually met her family? Maybe somebody is trying break you two up by feeding you a bunch of unsubstantiated gossip about her family. Your mama, maybe? Old girlfriend? Or someone who wants to steal your girl?

Work / Why English Teachers stay long term in Poland [30]

DominicB quote:"A lot of employers and academics have a very big soft spot for cashiers, waiters, valets and the like that does not extend to EFL teachers."

That's too bad. When I was hiring, a stint in a foreign country, especially with employment, would count much higher than a job as a cashier in a neighborhood store. One takes more independent thinking, initiative, and generally, balls, than the other.

Work / Why English Teachers stay long term in Poland [30]

I still think that teaching English in Poland for a year is more valuable for a new graduate that backpacking through Europe. At least shows some working experience. Also, more valuable, as a life experience, than working as a cashier, or a server in a restaurant.

Work / Why English Teachers stay long term in Poland [30]

Good post, CMC!
Some become English teachers as a means to support themselves as they try to get the travel bug out of their system, before they settle down.

They might not mean to do this for too long, but then, the Polish girls.. ;)

Food / POLISH RECIPES! [287]

Gosc123456, I'm confused.
You said that such cakes are DECLINED by most western cultures.
Surely you didn't mean that.
Decline = reject, refuse

Law / Problems in Poland - Swiss mortgage, bankruptcy, jail, mental health etc [26]

One of the way I observed many people dealt with their upside-down mortgage here in the US, they simply stopped paying their mortgage. It annoyed me to no end seeing few people I know live rent free for close to a year, because that's how long it took the banks to repossess their houses. All along convinced that it was entirely banks' fault.

News / US slaps Poland in the face (Comey Poland) [92]

I definitely don't want to takes sides here, and I honestly don't care what somebody said, but I really hate it when a sentence or two are plucked out of a statement and used to rile people. They should have printed a whole speech. These 10 seconds "soundbites" so prevalent today try to make their readers into morons (if they're not morons already ;) ).

here is the link to the speech, I'm sure most of us here are capable of getting its point:

Language / Could someone please translate a couple of sections of this movie? [7]

First she says the movie is hard to describe, it works like a narcotic. In the second part they talk about what may have happened to Miranda. He: "She chose freedom". She "Freedom? As in disappearing into thin air?". He: "or escaped. Into another dimension. Secrets are hard to analyze."

Life / How To Make the Poland Homeless Happy [7]

[Moved from]: Help for Poland's homeless

Now, Poland's most desperate can get the help they need, once they register electronically:

The Polish newspaper, 'Dziennik Gazeta Prawna' has reported the Polish Ministry of Employment has spent forty-nine million PLN on setting up an internet portal to provide help for the homeless. Thirty-eight million PLN of these funds has been provided by the European Union.

Food / Which Polish milk brand is closest to UK supermarket style milk? [31]

When I was growing up in Poland my mom always boiled the milk before we used it.
Unless we were on my grandparents farm, where we drank it straight from the cow. Sort of speak. ;)
I guess she trusted our cows, or the delivery system, more.

Love / Polish girls hard in relationships [156]

Looks like somebody got burned.. In all honesty, relationships do go bad, and a guy speaking warmly of an ex is a rarity.
Here is stereotypical take on the situation:

Work / Cafes suitable for internet based working in Krakow? [4]

I can see sitting in a place all day if it is relatively empty. I hope once the place gets crowded, the freelancers on free wi-fi do realize that table turnover with paying customers is essential to business survival. ;)

Real Estate / Swiss Francs Mortgages in Poland [71]

Shouldn't the banks take the hit and convert the loans from swiss-franc to PLN like Hungary did? Or Rumania is planning to do?
And why do Polish banks even offer loans in foreign currencies? Or did those borrowers go to Swiss banks?

Real Estate / Swiss Francs Mortgages in Poland [71]

Here we go.
As of November 2014, 46% of total home loans in Poland are in Swiss-frank.
That seriously sucks.

News / Why is Amazon not present in Poland? [57]

UPS drivers with their own business and empowerment? What are you talking about? It IS the same thing! They are constantly timed for efficiency.
I watched your video, and the wining about getting points for being late, and being asked to improve. Give me a break. Can you imaging what that place would look if nobody was watching them? Obviously, you never owned a business. Or managed people at entry level positions.

News / Why is Amazon not present in Poland? [57]

I think approaching a physical job like a workout might keep one sane. (I bet that guy does not have to jog to keep in shape now ;) )

I always try to cut my own time down, be most efficient, in whatever I do. At Amazon, and many other big companies, there are numerous MBA's, engineers, statisticians, etc. constantly measuring, analyzing, trying to figure out how to shave couple of pennies off expenses.

Granted, if one feels such an overwhelming pressure, that is not a job for him or her. To others, it's a fine tuned ballet. (only half joking here)

Check out the UPS drivers: mentalfloss.com/article/60556/19-secrets-ups-drivers.

Here, can you imaginge one of these yahoos complaining of pressure learning how to do something like this?

Genealogy / Being ashamed of Polish ancestry? [156]

I love it when Americans say that they are *insert foreign country here*-American and then it turns out that their family emigrated over in the late 1800's, early 1900's.

It may help you to understand that when "Americans" ask about your roots, they do expect you to dig deep into your heritage.

Life / Important Poland etiquette question: bite of the herring first, then a shot, or shot first, then a herring? [22]

For the sake of the argument, let's just assume there are not that many people that drink straight vodka for its taste.
Getting ready for the party. As far as the animal noises, I'll have to skip that part. Not enough information. ;)

Thanks all, it was a huge hit! I didn't even bother with the bread. All my herring is gone, along with a bottle of vodka. Now, everybody knows to bite the herring before taking a breath. It was a fancy company, though, 16th century Italian art on the walls and all.. next time I'll do caviar instead of herring.
